New Kent, VA
For the Washington Running Report

Colonial Downs and Kalerunning.com are pleased to announce a unique event for the running community; the 1st Annual Virginia Derby Day 5K & Party On The Green on July 15, 2006 with prize money totaling $10,000. Following the race, runners can stay for Virginia Derby Day at Colonial Downs, a million dollar day of thoroughbred horse racing.

Starting in front of Colonial Downs, the ChampionChip timed 5K will wind through the scenic hills of the surrounding neighborhood and finish on the horse track. As the runners come down the stretch, spectators at the track will be able to view the runners live on local closed circuit TV and on the Jumbotron from the stands with race commentary provided by the track announcer. Participants of age will receive a free bet on the fourth race. With the purchase of the race day package, participants will receive a T-shirt, catered party on the green, a full day of horse racing and live entertainment.

With a total prize purse of $10,000, the race is expected to draw some high level competition in both the Open and Masters categories. In addition, there will be unique themed awards presented to the top three in each five-year age group. There will also be prize money for the middle of the pack and giveaways for the back of the pack participants. Awards for Open, Masters and Middle of the pack will be presented in the track winner's circle and announced throughout the track. All of this coupled with a great party and day of horse racing makes for a fun family day. We hope you will join us for this great inaugural event, the "Fastest 5K in Virginia" .
