Lance Armstrong Makes His First Appearance at American Century Celebrity Championship Pro Am Golf Tournament
7-Time Tour de France Champion Fights for Medical Research Funding with LAF; Armstrong Prepares for ING New York City Marathon in November
By Drew Woodrich July 12, 2006 updated 7/17/6 For the Washington Running Report
"The life of an athlete is simple; retirement is a challenge."
Armstrong Embraces Family Values
Lance Armstrong is a proud father who values spending time with
his young family, including a ski trip to deep powder ski
resort Sugar Bowl this past spring. The divorced Texan is
capitalizing on his celebrity status as a cycling superstar to
raise awareness of cancer, the need for financial support of
medical research, and the importance of early cancer detection.
A fellow cancer survivor is James Stowers, founder of American
Century Investments; Lance Armstrong and Stowers have begun a
multi-year collaboration offering "LiveStrong" Portfolios.
American Century sponsors the 17th Annual Celebrity Golf
Tournament at Lake Tahoe, NV on July 11-16, 2006.
Lance Armstrong Prepares to Run Long, Continues to Live Strong
Earlier this year, the ING New York City Marathon happily
announced that Lance Armstrong had been recruited to train for
and run in this year's race. Mary Wittenberg, President and CEO
of the New York Road Runners and race director, greeted the
good news, "We welcome Lance Armstrong with open arms and thank
him for the lift we are sure to see in an already healthy sport
of marathoning and in our efforts to get people moving toward
healthier and fitter lives." Lance Armstrong spoke to the media via teleconference on July 6
and set himself a worthy goal of finishing within one hour of
the winning time. Running is more challenging than he expected,
but he is training purposefully. November 5, 2006 will be a
date to remember, for him and for millions of marathon
spectators in New York City. This year's ING New York City Marathon will be held on Sunday,
November 5, and features America's top female distance star
Deena Kastor, Olympic bronze medalist and winner of the 2005
LaSalle Bank Chicago and 2006 Flora London marathons.
A Golf 'Hack' Seeks to Break 100
Lance Armstrong appeared at the Lake
Tahoe, NV, golf event, perhaps as a clever warm-up act for his
big
race in three months. On Thursday, July 13, with golf clubs in
hand, Armstrong will tee it up in the American Century
Celebrity-Amateur Tournament. He knows one golfer well, Michael
Jordan (former Chicago Bulls MVP), and is spreading the good
word about endurance sports to other celebrity golfers. He
didn't linger long, as he flew off to France after one round of
golf to catch the Tour de France--he is part owner in
the Discovery Channel racing team--and 'crown his successor.'"Celebrities in the tournament lend their name to a cause,
raise money and awareness," commented Armstrong on the Lake
Tahoe gathering. "It's huge that a star would show up, people
remember an event" when they see a well-known personality such
as Angelina Jolie in Africa. "My mom, she went to this tournament and still talks about
it. . . she fell in love with Big Ben, exchanged emails with
Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers' young quarterback),
and now he is a Super Bowl champ."
A Choice to Assist Others
The Lance Armstrong Foundation LAF works to
hold politicians responsible and seeks their votes to finance
cancer research. Many cancer deaths can be prevented by early
diagnosis and proper care; the annual magnitude is 100 times
the lives lost on September 11, 2001. Lance explained that he
remembers the awful events of that day, and he has opted to use
his resources to guide others back to a healthy life. "It's the
difference between what we know and what we do." Armstrong
researched his own cancer treatment options to increase his
odds of surviving. The American Century Championship
Since its inception in 1990, Tahoe's celebrity golf tournament
has raised over $2 million for a variety of charities. Lance
Armstrong's recent partnership with American Century
Investments has resulted in the Lance Armstrong Foundation
becoming a major beneficiary of the tournament's charity
fundraising. Autism Speaks, an organization involved with
awareness of autism and education for parents about the
importance of early intervention, is also a beneficiary, as
well as Lake Tahoe-based non-profits. The sponsor, American Century Investments, is a premier
investment manager serving financial intermediaries,
institutions and nearly 1.2 million individual investors. The final two days of the American Century Championship 54-
hole celebrity golf tournament were broadcast on NBC with commentary by top golf announcer Dan Hicks: Saturday, July 15 from
4:00-6:00 pm ET and Sunday, July 16 from 3:00-6:00 pm Players included Kyle Boller (Baltimore Ravens quarterback),
Michael Bolton (singer, "The Hunger"), Brandi Chastain (1996
American women's gold medal soccer team), Lou Holtz (former
Notre Dame football coach), Dan Jansen (US Olympic gold medal
speed skater), Mario Lemieux (NHL Pittsburgh Penguins), Ivan
Lendl (Czech former tennis star), Bode Miller (US pro downhill
skier), Dan Patrick (ESPN), Dan Quayle (US former Vice
President; Chairman, Cerberus Global Investments, LLC), Jerry
Rice (former NFL wide receiver great), Mark Rypien (former
Redskins quarterback), and Mike Schmidt (former MLB 3rd
baseman). The event Web site is www.tahoecelebritygolf.com
