About the AchieveDC summer program
Achieve is a Washington, DC based non-profit organization that
designs and implements youth-based triathlon training programs
to teach children how to lead healthy, active and successful
lifestyles. In partnership with the District of Columbia
Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and The Nation's
Triathlon, AchieveDC's 2008 summer camp took place June 23-
August 1st at two sites: Turkey Thicket Recreation Center and
Kenilworth Parkside Recreation Center. The program featured
specially-trained counselors and coaches teaching kids
swimming, biking and running skills required by the sport of
triathlon. They learned about transitions, proper nutrition,
safe hydration, triathlon specific exercises, stretches,
tactics and techniques as well as how to work with others in a
team oriented environment. Guest lecturers taught kids from
their experiences on how triathlons and leading a healthy
fitness oriented lifestyle can help them succeed in life. The
DC Triathlon Summer Camp is free of charge for participants and
provides the equipment needed for training during the program,
including bikes, helmets, swim fins, pull buoys, stretch cords,
training journals, kickboards, swim goggles, and a Houston
Triathlon Summer Camp bike jersey.
