For the Washington Running Report

NBC will broadcast (live) the Nike Prefontaine Classic from Eugene, OR on Sunday, June 10, 4:00-6:00 pm.

Despite having run the fastest mile in the world this year of 3 minutes 51.71 seconds, Alan Webb has elected to participate in the 2-mile instead of the Bowerman Mile at Sunday's Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, OR. According to the event Web site, Webb wants to take advantage of his top notch fitness by seeking to improve his American Record 2 Mile time of 8:11.48 set at the Pre Classic in 2005.

Webb is a two-time U.S. Outdoor 1,500 meter champion and the 2007 U.S. Indoor champion in the mile. He ran 3:53.43 in the 2001 Bowerman Mile, and set the still-standing national high school record for boys. The Bowerman Mile will feature American defending champion Bernard Lagat, and the 2005 champion and owner of the fastest time in the world for 2006, Alex Kipchirchir.

Webb joins a loaded two-mile race that features Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele (5000m world record holder, 12:37.35); Americans Matt Tegenkamp, Dathan Ritzenhein, Anthony Famiglietti, and Adam Goucher; and Craig Mottram of Australia (with a 5000m best time of 12:55.76).
