Frank Kurtz (in yellow trunks) is among the leaders at the start of the 2003 race.

The Kentlands Community Foundation announced today that online registration will open on June 15 for its 15th Annual Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Run, Walk and Kids Fun Runs, scheduled for Saturday, August 30, 2008. The event is hosted by the Kentlands Community Foundation in partnership with the City of Gaithersburg.

The Labor Day weekend event will feature a newly-designed course, giving participants the opportunity to experience the best in new urbanist communities as they wind through both the Kentlands and Lakelands neighborhoods. Local bands will play along the route. The event includes a 5K Run and Walk, two Kids Fun Runs, and the well-renowned Post-Race Festival at the newly- designed Market Street Plaza.

The Foundation is excited to announce that this year the annual 5K event will also serve as the opening activity for the 2008 Maryland Senior Olympic Games, being held at various venues throughout Montgomery County. The top three male and female finishers in age groups 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70+ will qualify to compete in the 2009 National Senior Olympic Games in San Francisco, CA.

Online registration is available for the 5K Run, Walk, Kids Fun Runs and for Senior Olympic participants at www.kentlands.org beginning June 15, 2008. You can also register by downloading an application form and sending it to the Kentlands Community Foundation, 267 Kentlands Boulevard, P.M.B. 200, Gaithersburg, MD 20878-5442.

Fifty percent of the registration fees will be donated to a local charity. Last year the Kentlands Community Foundation donated $10,000 to the Dolores Swoyer Fund, providing scholarships to children in need to attend summer camp in the City of Gaithersburg.

The Kentlands Community Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) philanthropic organization rooted in the Kentlands neighborhood in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Specifically, it is dedicated to promoting the cultural arts, serving as a national resource on the ideals of new urbanism, and providing opportunities for volunteerism and community outreach. All programs are open to the public, and volunteers are always welcome. For more information or to learn more about lending a hand, contact the Foundation office at 301-926-6636 or visit www.kentlands.org
