Scope It Out 5K
The Inaugural Race
By Kathy Freedman and James Moreland March 18, 2005 Washington, DC For the Washington Running Report
Elite Feld near Best Times for 2005
A strong field assembled at Hains Point amid sunny skies on the
last full day of winter. The Scope It Out 5K Run/Walk for Colon
Cancer Awareness attracted all types of runners and walkers to
the flat, fast course-the fast and serious, the mid-packers,
the
fun runners, walkers, families pushing strollers, and people
who
came out in support of the cause. The top three men all finished under 15 minutes, and the top
three women in less than 18 minutes. For the men, lanky John
Henwood, from New York and New Zealand, stood out from the
crowd
and beat second-place Chris Graff (29) of Arlington, VA by just
five seconds, 14:43 to 14:48. Reston's Rick Rountree (27) (seen
in photo above) rounded out the top three with 14:55 on the
clock. Henwood (32), a fitness instructor and Wellington, New Zealand
native with a 10K personal best of 27:57.5, was last seen in
this area in the fall of 2003, when he placed in the top 3 of
the races he
entered (2nd place Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 14:42 and 3rd
place Opus 5K in 14:29), and won the Army Ten-Miler in 48:39.
John Henwood ran the Olympic 10,000 meters final in Athens last
summer but dropped out with an Achilles injury; he has recently
resumed training this year. In the women's race, Susannah Kvasnicka (32) of Great Falls,
VA,
was first with a comfortable margin over Arlington's Mary Kate
Bailey (30), 17:10 to 17:26. Vanessa Hunter (29), (seen in
photo
below) also from Arlington, finished 24 seconds later. Kvasnicka and Bailey finished one-two at last week's St.
Patrick's Day 10K in 35:18 to 35:50, and at the GW Birthday 10K
in February, 35:39 to 35:49. Bailey, a Marine, won last fall's
Marine Corps Marathon in 2:48:31. On November 3, 2004. USA
Track
& Field named Bailey Athlete of the Week. The first annual Scope It Out 5K was a very successful event,
which has already outgrown its venue. Participants came from 20
states and the District of Columbia to demonstrate their
support
for the cause or just to enjoy a well-organized run in a park
setting in our nation's capital. The five-year age groups, to
80
and above, give all participants a fair chance at earning a
prize.
Fast Hains Point Course Produces Fast Age Group Times
The sometimes-silent 20-34 divisions spoke loudly today. Each
of those three divisions for the men had times that often win
races. Matt Enders was a West Chester surprise in 15:27.
Phillipe Rolly, who was missed at St. Patrick's Day 10K (new
baby), was back
wining his division easily in 15:25. In the middle 25-29
division, it was the battle of the Christophers. Christopher
Nowakowski of Baltimore, MD bested ranked runner Christopher
Bain of Bethesda 16:06 to 16:25. Does this portend the future,
Baltimore challenging the local athletes just like in baseball?Pascal Brazey of Washington, DC is another ranked runner with a
fine time, wining the 35-39 in 16:57. George Buckheit (47) of
Reston, in 16:47, is gearing up for a run at the top of the
rankings. For the women, local runners did most of the damage. Susannah
Kvasnicka of Great Falls, VA won in 17:10 and seems to be
gaining an edge over rival Mary Kate Bailey of Arlington, VA
17:26. Watch out! The top women in the area are headed on a
collision course striving for the coveted top spot in the
rankings. The soon to be published Winter rankings show the top
six spots divided by the thinnest of margins. Already the Spring
season has made those spots even tighter. All the winners in the open divisions sported ranked times.
Lisa Thomas of Alexandria, VA leading that charge with 18:23.
Win Persina of Washington, DC raced a fine 20:59 before she will
bid adieu to the 40-44 division. Not that Ofelia Perotti (48) of
Alexandria, VA plans to make it easy. She ran 20:33.
Mega Racing Produces Results
So maybe you just like to race a lot. Will that help your
times?
Ask second place age group winner in the 50-54 division Peter
Blank of Annandale, VA (far right in photo). He has run more
than 1000 races in the
last six years and more than fifty 5Ks in each of those years.
Yet he seems to be getting faster. Jon Palks of Bowie, MD,
winner
of the 55-59 division, has in the past run as many as ninety-
two
5Ks in a year. He is now gunning for the record of 111 set by
Mitch
Radella of Pittsburgh, PA; Palks has twenty-six 5Ks in the
books
so far this year. His times keep going down and his awards
collection keep mounting up.
