Tough Day at the Races
Capitol Hill Classic 10K & 3K

"Running is life," the T-shirt says, "and the rest is just
details."Sometimes, however, the details can become overwhelming. Such
was the case at the silver anniversary of the Capitol Hill
Classic 10K, although most of the record crowd of 2,459 ran and
enjoyed the summer-like sunny weather, blissfully unaware of the
pall cast upon the proceedings by the unexpected death five days
earlier of Mary O'Neill Rush, race registration coordinator and
pillar of the close-knit Capitol Hill community. "It's been a tough week," said race co-chair Kristen
Hartke. "She was larger than life." With the funeral for Rush held at the height of prerace
registration the day before the race, volunteers cobbled
together a committee to handle the demand while the mourners
gathered. That the race and its accompanying festivities came
off seamlessly was a tribute to the doggedness of the race
organizers to honor Rush and hold the event at all. White
ribbons in her memory adorned hundreds of volunteers. Sadly, the details weren't quite through wreaking havoc at
Capitol Hill, as the muggy weather overcame three runners who
left the finish area in ambulances. One man, 31-year-old Royce
Resoso from Herndon, collapsed after crossing the finish line in
54 minutes 4 seconds and was rushed to the Washington Hospital
Center, where he remained in intensive care Sunday night. But runners run and the show went on. Arlington's most prolific
roadracer, Michael Wardian, easily added another title to his
growing collection. Wardian, 30, grabbed the lead at the start,
extended his margin around RFK Stadium and ran utterly alone up
Capitol Hill to the finish, winning in 32:14. "I was hoping to go faster," Wardian said, "but it was tough
running by myself. Still, it's always good to win." Wardian should know, even though he was racing on fumes, having
won the
Germantown 5-Miler in 25:14 the day prior,
then celebrating his upcoming nuptials at an engagement party
early into Sunday morning.
Women's winner Christina Wells, 29, from Woodbridge (photo
left), who finished 25th in 2:42:01 at the women's Olympic
marathon trials in April, beat
Jackie Concaugh, 29, from Alexandria. Wells ran
36:28; Concaugh, who arrived at the race straight from her overnight
hospital shift, ran 37:37.While hundreds of volunteers persevered through their grief so
that thousands could race, it may have been the dozens of
squealing youngsters who participated in the kids' run afterward
that best exemplified the joy even amidst the sadness that makes
our regular Sunday morning races--"just like church," some say--
so integral to living.

Update: When Royce Resoso regained consciousness in the
hospital Sunday night, he immediately asked what his finishing
time was! A typical runner's reaction . . . and one for which we
are grateful. See
