Start of the 2005 Cassidy & Pinkard Race for Hope 5K

Special People, Special Event

The 8th Annual Cassidy & Pinkard Race for Hope Brain Tumor Society 5K Run/Walk

For the Washington Running Report

The 8th Annual Cassidy & Pinkard Race for Hope Brain Tumor Society 5K Run/Walk was very special once again. The rain ended before the new start time of 8:30 am as runners and walkers took off down Pennsylvania Avenue for a tour of the City's monuments. More than 5,350 smiling survivors, runners, walkers, teams, and sponsors participated in the event.. Many of the participants were on teams. Nearly 200 teams, comprised of survivors, emotionally-motivated friends, co-workers, and family, ran or walked. 4,150 people were on teams honoring loved ones, past and present. Many teams stayed together throughout the event marching to their own cadence.

There was enormous satisfaction on the race committee for a year's worth of effort in hosting their most successful event. Each $50,000 raised pays for another research grant and provides hope for the families of people afflicted with brain tumors. The event raised in excess of $1,200,000 from generous corporate sponsors and excited team members. Actually, you have until September to finish contributing to this year's race. See the race Web site. Everyone was enthusiastic and collectively shared the joy of success. Surpassing both goals, for participants and fundraising, contributed that special feeling to everyone who came out.

More than 150 survivors participated this year, three times as many as last year's record. Peter Cravaritis from Montgomery Village was the fastest survivor in 24:19. Sari Henry from Washington ran 26:22 to be the fastest female survivor.

The overall men's winner was Paolo Natali, age 24 (photo left), in a time of 15:15. Second place honors went to Philippe Rolly, just hundredths of a second behind. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point was proudly represented by Anthony Calingo's third place finish of 16:41. Calingo was also third overall in 2004.

The overall women's winner, Jackie Concaugh (30, of Alexandria, VA; photo left), ran 17:25. That time was 2 minutes and 3 seconds faster than last year's winner, Eileen Kickish. This year, Kickish finished in 19:38 for sixth place. At 18:33, Alexandria's Marni Kruppa took second place. From Ashburn, Patti Shull raced in to the finish six seconds later for third place. Considering that the first two women were ages 30 and 24, Shull's time was quite impressive, as she was the first female in the masters division to finish.

After the 5K runners and walkers cleared the starting line, the children lined up for their fun run and took off down Pennsylvania Avenue. Hundreds turned out to have fun, claim a medal, and run for the cause.

Certainly their enthusiasm and excitement will continue for months. This event provides the participants and the race committee with the energy to continue raising their goals. Please put May 7, 2006 on your calendar. Congratulations to everyone and thanks for raising awareness of the continuing need for brain tumor research.
