Local Runners Set American Records
112th Penn Relays
By James Moreland May 7, 2006 Philadelphia, PA For the Washington Running Report
After having to cut short its coverage on April 30 due to the
NHL playoffs, NBC is showing the entire one-hour show it planned
to air that day on Sunday, May 21 at noon EST.
For 112 years world class and national-class athletes have been
going to the University of Pennsylvania to compete in the Penn
Relays. This year it started in April and finished the next day
in May. Included are scores and scores of events from 100M to
10K, along with 4 by 100M, 4 by 400M relays and tons of field
events.
Many local runners go up to live the dream. Terri Rath (42) of
Ashburn, VA [right] and Julie Hayden (46) Ashburn, VA [left]
have been owning the competition here, racing the Potomac Valley
Track Meets held all summer long. This year they decided to take
their show on the road. They would compete in the mixed masters
4 by 400M. Below is Julie's report.
"We were the first women's team in the Mixed Masters event,
breaking the current American Record. This appears as 4:35.60,
although the So Cal team I ran on in Hawaii ran 4:26.55, but for
some reason unknown to me it has never appeared in the records.
Any way, now we have the faster time of 4:23.48."
We had a fantastic weekend in Philly. We stayed with Lorraine
Jasper who lives in the Countryside west of Philly. Everything
went smoothly and much as you had told us about, lettering and
herding and all. It appeared that a lot of the teams put their
fastest runner out first, which was a bit nerve wracking, as
poor Miki Smith was toward the back of the field and behind the
two other women's teams. Not part of the expected plan! Luckily
Miki kept her cool and ran her own race (65.78)! The exchange
was not the easiest, a couple of guys muscled in front of Terri
Rath when their runners were behind, but before we knew it Terri
had passed the other two girls and left them for dust! (66.81)
Terri and I had a safe exchange and all Lorraine and I had to do
was get round at a decent pace. My legs had taken control a
little more than I would have liked in the final meters but I
managed to get the baton safely to Lorraine for the final
exchange (65.75) and Lorraine cruised around in 64.76. As you
can imagine we were very excited when realized that we had
broken the record. In fact, it has taken us longer to recover
from all the celebrating than the actual race itself!"
