14th Annual Valvoline Instant Oil Change Goblin Gallop 5K

Runners Give their Halloween Preview
By James Moreland
October 28, 2007
Fairfax, VA
For the Washington Running Report

The surge in racing is far from over. The numbers are still going up like the black and orange balloon arch blowing in the breeze. The fall season is in full swing with a blustery morning as more than 1,550 runners lined up to enjoy the last race before Halloween. This thirty percent increase caught the race by surprise and they ran short of race numbers and shirts. No matter, many of the almost 1,200 5K racers and 365 plus fun runners (1K) came dressed in costumes. Race announcer Lyman Jordan bravely tried to critique and describe their attire, which was varied and creative. One man dressed as a gumball machine, another runner was a large wedding cake. Batman, Spiderman, and Superman were the most common trend. But there were also Transformers and the always welcome pirates.

The race was held at Fairfax Corner and the shopping center was perfect for a race setting. There was ample close by parking and the square in between the stores was ideal for the rock 'n' roll band The Sparkplugs to entertain the creatures who returned from the 5K loop around the town. There was lots of food and drink for the runners and games for the young ones. Successful races are more than just Go! and then it is all over when you cross the ChampionChip finish line mats.

The race wisely went with five year age groups after handing out cash to the top three men and women and special awards for the top three masters. Surprisingly, they stopped at 70-99. After all, Race Director Dixon Hemphill (82), as a former elite runner, knows that the aging process for runners is not a straight line. Eighty-five-year-old Walt Washburn is a multiple American record holder but he could not keep up with elite 70-year-olds such as Chan Robbins and Ken Quincy.

For the overall, the tune of teens winning is becoming very common. Ezkyas Sisay (18) of Washington, DC (in photo) started out about three rows back and the powered his way to the front and solid victory in 15:30. It is his fifth 5K win in as many weeks. This course lends itself to flameouts but Sisay was never really threatened after he turned down the first hill. The course is steeply downhill for the 3/4 mile and with the wind at your back, the first mile split made many runners confidant. Then turning the corner into the wind and starting up a series of hills, pace was harder to maintain. The only flat stretch on the course was the first and last hundred meters. The early morning breeze caused many runners to run some thirty seconds slower than normal.

Third place Jason Dwyer (28) of Arlington, VA got the best jump at the start with Dante Morales (18) of Fairfax, VA close behind. The most serious threat was the third runner in the pack, the flame red hair of Jake Klim (27) of Rockville, MD. Morales was dropped though his fine 16:27 is a open division qualifier for the Runner Rankings Klim pressed past Dwyer and won a close one for second 15:44 to 15:47. Dwyer was runner-up last year in 15:42. Fifth place Scott Munro (26) of Arlington, VA just missed the 17:00 mark.

Belainesh Gebre (19) of Washington, DC (in photo) continued her winning ways, finishing seventh among all runners and more than a minute ahead of the second woman. All the top women are slender and would do well to duck behind others to hide from the wind. Yet the top three were well separated. Mindy Thomas (23) of Stafford, VA is making a name for herself with a nice 18:49 time. Megan Sowa (24) of Arlington, VA finished just ahead of the first grandmaster man (by chip time) in 19:30 and she could hear the footsteps of the fourth women, first master Linda Foley (45) of Oak Hill a mere thirty meters back. Sixth place Anita Freres (42) of Reston, VA turned the final corner in time to see Foley finish and churned home in 20:02. Fifth place Amanda Hodgson (29) of Alexandria, VA was just off her heels in 20:04 but earned the spot with a three second faster chip time. Lisa McNichols (40) of Alexandria, VA won the third masters spot by twenty meters over Sushila Nanda (47) of Arlington, VA.

For the masters men, Terry McLaughlin (47) of Spotsylvania, VA is on a roll lately. The former 31:00 10K runner has 62 races run this year but averages only a little more than two miles per race. He used his mile speed to hold off George Lane for the masters title with 18:02. Lane ran 18:10. The third master, Craig Greene (42) of Manassas, VA, has blazing 54 second quarter speed but is just getting started on his 5K. Even in the tougher conditions today, he ran 18:38. He is already eagerly looking for another 5K to match his Stone Ridge 5K two weeks ago in 18:14 and earn himself a place in the Runners Rankings. He needed his sprinter's speed to pass a half dozen runners in the final stretch. One of them, Matt Anderson (41) just three seconds back, is already a Ranked Runner.

Richard Adams of Herndon, VA was the first grandmaster to cross the finish line in 19:21. Indeed, he was fast enough to be in the top three of every division except 15-19 and 25-29. Still, he earned second place as Dan Eddy of Wellington, VA started 20 seconds late and finished just nine seconds behind him to earn the chip time victory. Nancy Crippen (60) of Stafford, VA was the top female grandmaster in 23:20 just ahead of 58-year-old Callie Edmundson, who ran 23:36.

William Scott (60) of Lanham, MD is looking for a top ranking in his new division. He has not been racing lately but he cranked out a very solid 21:07 to win the division by more than half a mile. His friends note that he seems to be running even faster than he was in his fifties. John Haubert (65) of Franconia, VA is finally healthy again and used that and his new division to catapult to the top of the division with a fine 22:43. Chan Robbins (70) of Arlington, VA (in photo) worked his way to victory again though he was not up to smiling for the camera. Tami Graf (71) of Lusby, MD dispensed with her division easily in 29:10.
