15th Annual Valvoline Instant Oil Change Goblin Gallop 5K

Another Successful Party Race
By James Moreland
October 26, 2008
Fairfax, VA
For the Washington Running Report

Race photographer Kathy Freedman gives us a look at the race start.

Runners dodged a bullet this weekend. Saturday morning was cool but soon dampened as the area ended a mini drought of three weeks. The weather man explained to everyone Saturday night that Sunday would be sunny and dry. "Yes, it will be colder but the runners like it that way." The 33rd Marine Corps Marathon was on the news with its more than 18,000 finishers but none of them were dressed up as anything other than a runner. At the awards in the women's division, a costumed "strawberry" bested an "apple." Many of the award winners wore costumes on the stage as they accepted their prizes, which included more than $3,000 in cash. The top three masters received gift certificates from Coastal Flats, located directly behind the stage. Age groups went three deep in five year age groups, though they stopped at 70-99. There were some excellent older runners such as Larry Dickerson (77) and Walt Washburn (86) who excel but can longer stay with the young whippersnappers such as age group winner Chan Robbins (71).

At this year's Goblin Gallop, nearly 1200 runners finished the 5K and the fun run included around 500 hundred happy Halloween costumed characters. The T-shirt was a bright orange glow in the dark that shouted out, "This race is a party." In the square, a really good band pumped out energy with power songs before, during, and after the race. Just as they did last year, The Sparkplugs provided some great songs for the huge crowd of runners, walkers, and spectators.

Watching them set up the food before the race on this gorgeous autumn morning, one could have been tempted to forego the race and be first in line for the hot dogs, popcorn, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, that joined the traditional fruits, bagels, bottled water.

The fun run/walk went off at 8:30 and the narrow streets of the mall were jammed with happy people. Then at 9:00, announcer Joe Rubinstein urged everyone to line up behind the ChronoTrack mats and the race was soon underway. The first 150 meters was like the 'running of the bulls' as hundreds of racers darted out through the crowded street. Soon after the race turned the corner and blitzed down a long hill to give runners a chance for early speed.

Last year's champion Ezkyas Sisay (19) of Burke, VA (in photo) had let a couple runners stay close and won a close race in 15:30. This year the teen, who turns twenty next month, powered away from runner-up Steve Mance (24) of Alexandria, flirting with a sub 15:00. Mance had finished a mere five seconds behind Sisay last week at the Stone Ridge 5K. This time he ran 15:35. Third place Tim Schaefer (30) of Gaithersburg, MD, coming off a 10K win in September ran a solid 16:21.

These times are surprisingly tame for a large race with cash prizes. Fourth place Dylan Keith at 16:55 was the last runner to break 17:00 just as only four did last year. Last year Terry McLaughlin (48) of Spotsylvania, VA led all masters with 18:02, including this years second masters George Lane (17:56) who avenged his 2007 race of 18:10. As with all the top runners, McLaughlin was a little disappointed with the "drop off" in his time. He is sure to be back to challenge this year's winner Jean Chrisophe Arcaz (47) of Rockville, MD (in photo chasing after Ryan Donohue who eluded him to earn fifth place overall in 17:24).

Karsten Brown (34) of Front Royal, VA has been preparing for the submasters with a break out year, finishing in a solid 17:28. Close behind him, eighth place Rennix Offutt (16) of Sterling, VA was the fastest first time racer at the Stone Ridge 5K last week, he like it so much he returned to win his division in 17:51.

The really competitive divisions were the fifties. These old guys were out for blood. Gary Grimsley (54) of Springfield, VA was so hot he ran without a shirt. He promised and delivered a sub 19:00. Last year's winner Steve Johnson of Alexandria, VA was only a few seconds slower and did not make the top three. Grimsley gunned after last year's 55-59 runner-up Richard Adams Jr. of Herndon, VA feeling certain that he could stay with the top guns in that division. Last year Adams was first across the line but lost to rival Dan Eddy in net time. This year with rumors of a possible Chuck Moeser sighting, Adams jetted out quickly taking on the challenge offered by 40-44 age group winner Matt Anderson (18:21). Adams hung with him improving over last year's 19:21 with perhaps his best race of the year. He held off Grimsley's final charge to be top grandmaster in 18:42.

Steve Robinson (53) of Herndon, VA is enjoying an excellent fall, earlier running his fastest 5K of the year in 19:10. Today's race, his fourth 5K of the fall, was in 19:14 one second faster than his slowest race of the fall. He just eked out a victory over Trey Kinkead by less then a second net time, using that final competitive charge to improve his race time. After the race, he was eager to find out if Kinkead was in his age group. Nope, Kinkead was in the 40-44 division in which he finished third, while Robinson was second in his age group.

All in all eight grandmasters, finished faster than twenty-one minutes. In photo, the ninth grandmaster was Peter Hemphill (50) of Centreville, VA in 21:12. Race Director Dixon Hemphill is the proud father of this fine runner. The elder Hemphill knows what it takes to run a good race, holding a few Virginia state records.

A mere ten years ago while in his seventies, Hemphill ran the Race for the Cure 5K in 21:58. That will give Chan Robbins (71) of Arlington, VA something to shoot for. Nobody racing today can touch Robbins in the 5K, which he ran in 22:55 to dominate his division. Indeed he was only one second behind the 60-64 winner Dick Conway of Springfield, VA

As with an increasing number of races, the women out numbered the men, this time by more than 200 with 659 women and 450 men. For the winner Elena Orlova (38) of Germantown, MD, English is not her first language. It is clearly running. She burst away from the field and was the 11th runner overall. A mere two years from being a master, her blazing 18:17 was very impressive. This is especially so with no other women to push her. Young Sam(antha) Ference of Clifton, VA had an easy time as runner-up in 19:45 but never had a chance to close on Orlova. Third place money was a different story. Marie Sandrock (36) of Alexandria, VA got out strong but she never could shake fourth place Gillian Kalaris (32) of Leesburg, VA. As expected, runners slowed a lot in the second and third miles after enjoying the early downhill charge. Kalaris stayed within striking distance and when the race crested the final hill for the final quarter sprint she was still close. Sandrock dug it out to win the spot 20:36 to 20:46.

The fifth place runner was a young runner, Anna Markowitz (15) of Springfield, VA. There were lots of young runners in the race. Many flamed out after the first half mile. Markowitz stayed strong holding off the challenge by the pack of women following. Seventh place Monique Rico (40) of Aldie, VA (in photo) had a lot of confidence coming off a masters win last week at the Stone Ridge 5K in 20:55. With a slightly hillier course, she took the top spot with 21:28. Second master Andrea Vincent (40) of Fairfax, VA had her in her sights with a top ten finish in 21:58.

In the grandmasters, 50-54 Merrilee Seidman (54) of Alexandria, VA was tops in 24:13. Suanne Shocket (55) of Manassas, VA was next in 24:33 but she had a net time of 24:12. Clearly, these two age group winners will have further discussions when Seidman joins Shocket in her division. Even starting a minute late Eileen Collins (61) of Herndon, VA easily was the top runner older than sixty.

In photo below, third place Marie Sandrock powers homes a stride ahead of Steve Johnson, third 50-54.
