Pittsburgh's running community is very pleased to announce the
running of the inaugural "Great Replacement Race" 5K and 10K to
be held at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2003, in Schenley
Park, Pittsburgh, Pa.A group of dedicated local entrepreneurs and runners has worked
tirelessly to give the running community what it asked for--an
alternative to the now-cancelled Great Race, which was to be
held on September 28th. The new race, called "The Great
Replacement Race," will feature a 5K and a 10K run starting at
Phipps Conservatory in Schenley Park. The 5K will start at 8:30
a.m. and the 10K will start at 9:00 a.m. on September 28, 2003.
Both the 5K and 10K will be competitive, timed races. Both the
5K and 10K will have awards for overall winners. The 10K will
feature age group awards. The 5K course is a loop on the roads
in Schenley Park, passing through the golf course, down
Serpentine Road, proceeding past the Schenley Oval and Skating
Rink, and includes a mile-long downhill finish. The 10K repeats
the 5K course.
To register for "The Great Replacement Race," runners can log
onto
active.com to register online. Registration is
$18 by Saturday, September 20, and includes a timing chip which
must be returned, commemorative race T-shirt, and a race packet.
The current sponsors who have made this race possible include
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Dancespace 304, Elite Runners &
Walkers, Fleet Feet Sports, New Balance, Pittsburgh City
Councilman Bill Peduto, and the Pittsburgh Pharaoh Hounds.
Runners and walkers who would have normally run the Great Race
are encouraged to run "The Great Replacement Race" on the same
date. The need for members of the fitness community to join
together in support of this event cannot be overemphasized. The
Great Replacement Race, similar to its predecessor, will
continue to symbolize the city of Pittsburgh's vitality, health,
and fitness. Your registration for the race will help assure
that not only this year, but for years to come, the last Sunday
in September will be reserved as a Pittsburgh tradition for
volunteers, spectators, and participants.
Volunteers and sponsors are needed. For sponsorship and
volunteer information, please contact Pat Joseph of the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation at (412) 321-4422 or via e-mail
mjoseph@cff.org. Proceeds
from the race benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A portion
of the proceeds will also benefit the Richard S. Caliguiri
Amyloidosis Fund.
