James Bales of Alexandria
Takes First
It was an absolutely gorgeous day in downtown Washington, DC, the perfect setting for the first annual PACE Race 5K Run/Walk. The goal of raising funds for prostate awareness and cancer education (PACE), brought hundreds of participants to the starting line, many wearing "Survivor" signs on their backs.

James Bales (23) of Alexandria, Virginia (photo left, by Alan Penberg) had a 41-second lead over his closest competitor, winning the race in a time of 16:28.

After the race, runners and walkers enjoyed a brunch of fresh bagels and bananas before the awards ceremony.

1. Katie Goodwin (24) of Arlington, VA, also enjoyed a comfortable margin (35 seconds) over second place. She won the women's division in 19:34.


2. Second-place woman Shannon O'Connell (24) of Washington, DC, about a quarter-mile from the finish. Brian Barr (57) of Springfield, VA, was 4th in his age group.


3. Alden Hall (33) of Washington, DC was 2nd in 17:09.


4. Twenty-two seconds later, Jeff Regelman (41) of Bethesda, MD crossed the line and earned first in the masters division.
