19th Annual Fair Lakes 8K
By James Moreland September 11, 2005 Fairfax, VA For the Washington Running Report
Fair Lakes Circle in Fairfax, VA was swirling with smiling
faces. This race always brings out a large crowd and today was
no different. Not to worry, there was plenty of easy-to-get-to
parking. Even though the weather was probably the finest example
of an early fall day, the numbers were down a tad. Part of that
can be explained by the Washington Redskins game, the Nationals
still pushing for a wild card spot, and a somber event to
remember the horror of four years ago. Amidst the haunting news
about the recovery from Katrina, people were warned that driving
in the Metro area might be a real challenge. Gas prices starting
to dip, made it possible for some two hundred runners to come
and sign up race day. This race is one that many people run year after year. The
course is rolling but none of the hills are steep. Times here
are fast. Hometown runner Eric Post was second in 2002 in 25:50.
Then he dipped under twenty-five minutes to win in 2003. Last
year and today he finished second again. Ryan Mammen of
Woodbridge, VA won last year in 25:21 a few strides ahead of
Post. This year Post was 25:22 and Ryan bolted ahead to 25:16
for the win. Kareem Lanier from University Park, PA has run the
race for at least the last five years, often accompanied by his
twin brother Kyle. This year he matched his best finish, third
place, by barely holding off top-flight masters runner Mark
Stickley of Winchester, VA. Nearly every year mega racer Ted
Poulos of McLean, VA has been there, winning the masters title
the last three years. Running through a muscle injury, he still
managed a eighth place finish and second in the 40-44 division. Chuck Moeser is back! He won at the Leesburg 10K and the
Annapolis 10 Mile in August. Last week he narrowly missed at the
Rock 'n' Roll HM against top ranked Stephen Chantry of
Williamsburg, VA. Chuck is very confidant that he will win the
rematch. While Moeser did not make the Hampton Days 10K matchup
on the 10th, he did set the fastest 8K time for grand masters
with today's sixth place time of 27:39. Chantry had the previous
best time at the Shamrock 8k in March with 27:57. After winning in 2003, Alisa Harvey of Manassas, VA settled
for second place in 2004. The 2004 victor, Casey Smith, had been
second in 2003. This year, as Harvey prepares to turn forty, she
finished second again, this time to rising star Samia Akbar of
Herndon, VA. Two weeks ago Harvey had finished second at the
Annapolis 10 Mile. Sandie Adams of Winchester, VA is now fifty-
five. She finished ninth overall in 34:03. Alice Franks, oft
times a sure bet winner, settled for second in that division. Terrence McCarthy of Leesburg, VA has been winning his age group
almost continually since turning seventy. McCarthy is very
involved with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Today Jack
McMahon of Rockville, MD held him off 40:30 to 40:52. McMahon
turns seventy-five later in the fall. Tami Graf is 69 and still
winning her division. This race is part of a 12-race Grand
Prix Series. Graf, a frequent winner, says now it is too hard
to compete. In the past, the race had ten-year age groups until
60-99. This year, the race wisely chose to have five-year age
groups. On the younger side, Karen Dickerson (19) of Springfield, VA
defended her title and continues to win the teen division in
nearly every race she enters. William Domedion of Herndon, VA
was the first male teen in 30:46. Not quite enough to catch
Patrick Griffith (60) of Alexandria, VA, who was 29th overall in
30:42. Last week Griffith ran 10:58.75 at the 3K at the Potomac
Valley Games. That swift time is the fastest 3K for the division
this year in the country. John Haubert (62) of Alexandria, VA
was third in the division. Haubert has been racing most every
week since retirement and he seems to be getting faster with
each race. The new course starts downhill and ends on a downhill. That is
surely a crowd pleaser. In between what goes down most go up.
The course has no tough hills but the fourth mile does make one
long for that long downhill in the third mile. The course twists
and turns but there were so many cones and course marshals, it
would have been impossible to get lost. The water crews were
very enthusiastic. Even with the much cooler weather, it is
still summer. After cruising across the ChampionChip mats, runners headed for
the ice cream carts. These well-supplied delights lasted well
after the last runner had crossed the finish line. There were so
many prizes that they had a huge poster to list them all. The
top three runners earned cash and Glory Days gift certificates.
Age group winners were sent to Glory Days for the top three men
and women. The Grand Prize for the random drawings was a
$1,000.00 gift certificate to The Inn at Little Washington. After the 8K start, kids and adults alike lined up for a 2K fun
run, earning blue ribbons for their efforts.
