Dash for Dad/Depend 10K Run & 2K Walk
By James Moreland September 28, 2008 Alexandria, VA For the Washington Running Report
This first time event is one of a growing list of races using
the ChronoTrack timing system with its
disposable D-tag as way of scoring the race. In virtually every
race only the fastest runners can get started just as the race
begins. With the D-tag taped on the shoelaces every runner will
know exactly how long it took THEM to run their race. The race's mission is to raise funds and awareness of prostate
cancer. Prostate cancer is a common, but typically slow growing
cancer when compared to other types of cancer. As with many
cancers it is important to know about it early to make it
treatable. Project Zero is the project to end prostate Cancer. Nearly six hundred runners and walkers signed up for the event,
which starts in Alexandria, VA and follows the GW Birthday 10K
route. The course flies down Telegraph Road, circles through
the park for variety before blazing back to the finish. The
only real hill is the overpass in the first half mile.
Delightfully, it means you can really hammer the final stretch
for a fast finish.
Tim Schaefer (30) of Gaithersburg, MD (in photo) rocketed out
to an early lead and powered his way to a fast, albeit lonely
more than half mile lead, finishing in a blazing 34:04. The
next four spots were more in doubt. Michael Vega (30) of
Ashburn, VA used a blazing sprint to take away any doubt,
securing second place in 37:00. Third place Henry Grossman (37)
of Annandale, VA has not been in the racing circuit a lot
lately. His 37:35 time will drop further as the fall
progresses. It was enough to spot him a place over Daniel
Hatfield (31) of Alexandria, VA. Top teen Ryan Breeson (19)
made the trip from Annapolis to capture the fifth spot in 38:06.For the masters Robert Wilder (46) trumped the field coming
from even further, Charlottesville, VA. The second master was a
regular Michael Cannon (50) from Springfield, VA who narrowly
won his spot 42:50 to 42:54. It was no surprise he did not
recognize his competition as 59-year-old Mark Wigler is down
from Tubbardstan, MA.
With the women, it was also a landslide from Lansdowne, VA.
Seventeen-year-old Kathryn Goode bolted out the door for a
superb 41:56, which was 15th overall. Lucye Raffery (24) of
Washington, DC was runner-up in a solid 44:37. Masters
champion and third overall, Theresa Kolish of Alexandria, VA
scored well with 45:00. A minute later Shannon Day (34) of
Alexandria, VA crossed the finish line. The second masters was
Karen Young of Boyds, MD (in photo) running her 29th 10K of the
year. Coming north from Richmond, VA Deborah McGreevy won the
grandmaster title in 52:34.
Nearly a third of all the runners (117) were running the first
race of the lives. Additionally, 110 participated in the fun
walk.
