Capitol Hill Classic 10K
Randy Mayes
May 1999
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

A great turnout, a cool and breezy May morning, and a start line at The Peabody School in Stanton Park were the setting for the Twentieth Annual Capitol Hill Classic 10K. The course goes around the Capitol, winds through the historic and picturesque streets of Capitol Hill, around RFK Stadium, and back to The Peabody School. Last year's winner, Eron Ferreira of Falls Church, VA, was at the race originally as a spectator. At the last minute he entered the race due to the excitement of the festivities. Ferreira is a contender at distances from the mile to the marathon.

At the five mile point Ferreira and Eric Woronick of Arlington, VA were the leaders with no one in striking distance. Ferreira normally would take advantage of his speed and sprint for an easy win. Still recovering from a torn calf muscle, Ferreira jogged the last mile as his injury reappeared. Woronick won the race in 33:13 and Ferreira placed second in 33:54. Eighteen of the top fifty men were in the masters division.

Joan Fowler of Silver Spring, MD, was the first woman in 39:30, Maria Kozloski placed second in 40:29. Heather Sanders of McLean, VA, was the top woman's master at 46:10. In a shortened 3K race, David Panush of Washington, DC placed first in 7:57 as did Cheryl Dicicco of Vienna, VA at 10:21. A Senior Run and many Kid's Runs were also included. The Kid's Runs included the mile, 1/3 mile, and 50 yard dash. The 3K race features parent-child teams.

The race benefitted The Peabody School, The Watkins School, and Stuart-Hobson School which form the Capitol Hill Cluster Schools. The sponsor of the event is The National Capital Bank of Washington.
