Photo above: The top local finisher (2nd, 59:11),
Susannah Kvasnicka of Great Falls, VA, at the halfway mark in
fast company. 17-year-old Tyler Simmons (middle) of Manassas,
VA won his age group (57:38).
Early in the Race on Virginia Avenue
Top photo: Ivan Castro (center), a former weapons sergeant with
Special Forces in Iraq, lost his right eye and was blinded in
his left eye. He ran (1:26:42 net) with training partner Major
Phillip Young (34) of Springfield, VA.
Second photo: Members of the Army's "Missing Parts in Action"
team were given an advance start; the photo vehicle and race
leaders are close behind after mile 2.
Third photo: The Eighth Army men's team trained in the
mountainous terrain of Korea; Joseph Borg (26, in lime singlet)
finished in 57:41. He is tracked by a member (left) of the Fort
Bragg team.
Early Leads Established
Top photo: Raytheon dominated the corporate team competition.
Jason Barnes (44) and Stephen Sergeant (43) were among five
team finishers under one hour.
Second photo: Michigander Brian Gase (24, center) ran a solid
race and
clocked in at 58:23.
Third photo: Claudi Colita (29) of Romania won the 2007 Country
Music Half Marathon (1:16:50), and placed ninth (1:01:36) in
this race. William Wyche (27, far left) of Arlington, VA
finished in 1:01:06.
Early, Middle, and Late on the Course
Top photo: Igor Macarov (21, left) is a combat engineer and ran
with the MPIA team (2:29:43). He became an amputee in August
during service in Afghanistan. Third place female Johanna Allen
(26, orange top) of Woodbridge, VA ran 59:39.
Second photo: The top male contenders passed through five miles
together. The Brazilians wore yellow; race winner Jose Ferreira
(31) is leading in this shot. The man behind him, Reginaldo
Campos, finished second (by a second).
Third photo: A common sight along the Potomac River, a
helicopter flew by as runners streamed toward the finish line.
