(33) of Great Falls, VA runs in the big races and won 8 of 12
times, including the Marine Corps Marathon and Annapolis 10 Mile.
Open Women
Photo by Kathy Freedman: On the rise, Marni Kruppa (24) of
Alexandria improved her 10K from 38:16 in February to 37:57 in
March, and again in April to 36:36.
The Sallie Mae 10K was a major factor in deciding the top three
runners. Tatyana Chulakh of Gaithersburg, MD started the year
at the Outback 8K in 26:47 (34:00) over Ann McGranahan of
Newport, VA in 27:01 (10K = 34:18). They went south in March
and Chulakh lost to runner-up McGranahan 26:30 (10K = 33:39) to
26:37 (10K = 33:47) at the Shamrock 8K. When they traveled north again a month later, Tatyana Chulakh
returned the favor at Sallie Mae 10K 33:54 to 34:12 with
Susannah Kvasnicka next in 35:11. Chulakh capped the crown with
her Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K in 33:08. Ann McGranahan won
the Peaks of Otter in the best 5K of the year 16:50 (10K =
35:03) Susannah Kvasnicka was coming off a fine Credit Union Cherry
Blossom 10 Mile in 57:27 (10K = 34:32) over fourth place Emily
Richard 57:42 (10K = 34:41). The week following Sallie Mae,
Kvasnicka stepped up to a 34:39 at Pike's Peek 10K, also ahead
of Richards in 35:39. She was seeking to conquer everyone,
winning the GW Birthday 10K in February, and the St. Patrick's
Day 10K in March. During the summer, Susannah Kvasnicka became the first woman in
many years to bust 60:00 at the Annapolis 10 Miler. Then she
capped off her year by winning the biggest race in the area,
the Marine Corps Marathon, in a national calibre time of
2:47:10 (10K = 35:44). Fifth place Marina Bychkova of Gaithersburg, MD ran the
SunTrust Richmond Marathon in 2:42:40 (10K = 34:46). Sixth
place Anna Pichrtova of Richmond, VA ran the nTelos 8K in 27:28
(10K = 34:52). Seventh place Jill Krebs, of blazing 5K-speed,
ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 58:12 (10K =
34:59). Her best 5K was an overall win at the 180s Shamrock 5K
in 16:57 (10K = 35:17). Eighth place Aurora Scott of Portsmouth, VA is just 15 years
old. Still, she was the overall winner in all nine of her
races. Her best effort was the Jingle Bell 5K in 16:55 (10K =
35:13). Ninth place Mary Kate Bailey of Arlington, VA ran 35:49
in three 10Ks, including St. Patrick's, GW Birthday, and
Veterans. On Labor Day, she let loose a whale of a race,
blasting the Rock n' Roll HM in 77:35 (10K = 35:03). Vicki Cauller of York, PA garners tenth place with a special
time at the Great Allegany 15K in 53:47 (10K = 34:58) with a
downhill modification rating the race as 35:52.

All nine of Aurora Scott's races were more than two minutes
ahead of any other qualifier. In the teen divisions, many
runners did not race enough to qualify. All nine races were
overall wins! Hundreds of teens raced but did not qualify.
Still, none of them closed on the dominating times of Scott.
She easily made the top ten in the Open division. In 2004, her
Jingle Bell 5K was 17:48. She was 14. Now at 15, she raced home
in 16:55. Though most of her rapidly improving times are at the
5K, she also raced the Elizabeth River 6 Mile in 35:03. Kristen Malloy of Phoenix, MD is the runner-up, running the
BRRC WDF 5K in 18:53. In third place, BULLET Brittany
Rooks has just turned 11! Her fastest race was the Bay Cafe 5K
in 19:03. She also raced a half marathon, finishing third
overall in 93:18. At the RRCA Challenge 10M, she bested Beth
Links 69:12 to 69:42 to win the teen division. Karen Dickerson
of Springfield, VA won her division in 13 of her 18 races
before turning 20.

BULLET Elena Orlova of Gaithersburg, MD turned 35 and
quickly raced the fastest four times in the division. Though
she raced in three divisions, she only qualified in one of the
periods, overtaking Alisa Harvey in the fourth period, besting
her at the Labrecque 4 Mile 22:34 to 22:47. Harvey had four of
the five fastest times and won the spring and summer periods.
In the fall she was runner-up and then moved on to win the
masters division. Denise Knickman of Baltimore, MD is a prolific runner with many
overall victories. She has run 50 races in a year. This year,
she won the Ocean City Marathon. She raced two more sub-3 hour
ones, Frederick in 2:57:51 and Baltimore in 2:57:09. With more
than 25 age group wins, she edges Maureen Ackerly of
Mechanicsville, VA for the runner-up spot. In the fall, Ackerly
had a super nTelos 8K in 29:28 (10K = 37:24). Knickman had nine
races in between that race and Ackerly's next best effort, the
King's Charter 8K in 30:30. Marjan Huizing also had one special race. At the DARCARS Pike's
Peek 10K, she won her age group in 37:54. On a much tougher
Piece of Cake 10K in Seneca Park, she ran 39:36. Patti Fulton
is next with her Race for Cooperative Development 5K in 18:40
(10K = 38:52).

Since turning forty in the final period, BULLET Alisa
Harvey of Manassas, VA has dominated the division. Watch out!
Maria Spinnler won the spring with a pile of fast races
including a 37:12 Sallie Mae 10K. Then she checked out of the
racing scene. Megan Burns of Virginia Beach, VA won the first and third
periods and was runner-up to Harvey in the fourth. Burns had
the five best races, from 5K to the marathon. Her only race of
the second period was an overall win at the Shamrock Marathon
in 2:58:28 (10K = 38:09). In the summer, she had overall 5K
wins in the low 18:00s. By September, she was ready for her
best race, the Rock 'n' Roll HM in 82:17 (10K = 37:11). Now it gets dicey. Laura Feix of Centreville, VA won the first
period with the next best time. Her Outback 8K was 30:24 (10K =
38:36). Monica Grillo bested Freix 64:27 to 64:44 at the Credit
Union Cherry Blossom 10M. Freix also won the Reston 10 Mile in
64:54 to win the runner-up spot. At the Annapolis 10 Miler,
Robyn Humphrey, 65:02, beat both Grillo, 66:46, and fifth place
Maureen Hall, 67:38. Humphrey adds a division win at the Bay
Cafe 5K in 18:40 (10K = 38:52) and a four second victory at the
Veterans Day 10K to narrowly pass Grillo. Hall split wins with
Humphrey in 5Ks and she dominated her hometown Great Allegany
15K in 58:46

runs mostly 5Ks, continuing to lower her times and moving up in
the ranks.
Two-time division champion Lee DiPietro of Ruxton, MD easily
became three-time. She did not compete in the first two
periods. Then starting in June, she came, she saw, and she
conquered. All ten of her races were faster than any other
woman. All were under a forty-minute 10K pace. She started
sluggish with a 39:46 10K. She revved up immediately the next
week, racing a 7-mile race in 42:33 (10K = 37:18). Six sub 6:00-
minute pace 5Ks prepared her for a 3:01:26 Baltimore Marathon. The next four spots were closely contested. Leisa Ensle of
Virginia Beach, VA takes the lead with her Yorktown Battlefield
10M in 67:04 (10K = 40:18). Her Rock 'n' Roll HM in 1:29:45
(10K = 40:35) fortified her runner-up spot. Debi Bernardes ran
a couple sub 20:00 5Ks with her fastest race being the Connect
the Dots 3.446 M in 21:39 (10K = 40:16). Debbie Flynn is next
with her 40:24 at the Pike's Peek 10K. (Note the spring period
winner Patti Shull had the fastest 10K, winning St. Patrick's
Day 10K in 38:40). Valerie Plyler ran an even larger bunch of
5Ks, besting with Follow the Children in 19:27 (10K = 40:30). The BULLET of the division is Beverly Black of
Frederick, MD. From off the radar, she moved up to 12th in the
division in the fall. In the spring, she turned the Pike's Peek
10K into an Open qualifying 41:13. Since turning 45, her worst
race was the Candy Cane City 5K in 20:47.

Betty Blank started the year with a minor injury. Few of us
noticed as she had won the division. Two of the top four
runners from last year moved on the next division. Naomi
Stanford came out and controlled the spring with three monster
races at Cherry Blossom, Sallie Mae, and Run vs. Row, but
failed to qualify in any other period.Blank's problems did not end. Oft times Margaret Starnes of
Street, MD is overlooked. She hails from the northeast corner
of the state. Most of her races are RASAC club races, including
their major race, the Bel Air Town Run 5K. She had matched
Stanford's best of the year 10 mile at the Credit Union Cherry
Blossom with her 72:27 at the hilly RRCA Challenge 10M. Then
she stoked the fire with an identical 72:27 for the Gunpowder
10 Mile in the summer. These two top runners scrambled back and forth with Blank
winning one period and Starnes one period. In the other two
periods, they both topped each other once. Blank narrowly earns
the crown with 12 of the top 20 times, including four major
races. Street had seven of the top 20 with two major races.
Starnes's best effort was the Run to the Rescue in 20:17 (10K =
42:14). Blank had two (10K equivalent) 42:20 races, the
Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 33:42 from last fall and the
Veterans 10K this fall. The other top-20 race was Dorothy Winn's victory at the
Elizabeth River 6M in 43:33. The next two spot are as close as
can be. Jenny Rexrode was ahead of Linda Gulick in three of the
four periods. Rexrode has the fastest times with her Jake's
Reindeer 5K in 21:03 (10K= 43:49) and By the Bay 5K in 21:06
(10K = 43:56). When they met in the spring at the Ukrop's
Monument Avenue 10K, Gulick won 44:12 to 44:24. Her fall nTelos
8K in 34:37 (10K = 43:57) gave her the edge. The BULLET of the division is now Alison Suckling of
Arnold, MD. She turned fifty in the final period and
immediately shook things up. She blasted the fastest four times
of the year, including taking down Blank at the Veterans Day
10K with her 42:06.

Alice Franks of Rockville, MD had been used to the crown,
having won the last two years. The latest class of 50-54
matriculated and pushed her back to third. The top four women
only met each other three times. All three were major races
where this period's champion, Sandra Adams of Winchester, VA,
won convincingly over Franks. Sandra Adams won at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in
71:10 (10K = 42:46) as well as at the DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K,
42:24. Both she and runner-up Barbara Mathewson of Virginia

monster Ukrop's 10K in 42:38 and the fastest half marathon at
Pomoco in 1:35:05 (10K = 42:58). After these two shared the top ten times, Franks narrowly earns
the third spot with her Pike's Peek 10K in 44:42 and her Credit
Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 74:24 (10K = 44:43). Franks had 31

Photo by Kathy Freedman: BULLET Betty Smith (64) of
Rockville, MD is running times that would have her leading the
65-69 division.
Four different runners won the division in 2005. Before mostly
disappearing, Janice Stoodley narrowly won over Joan Coven.
Coven had won the swift-course Governor's Landing 5K in 23:18
(10K = 48:31) while Stoodley ran the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M
in 38:28 (10K = 48:27). In a quirk of scheduling, the 2005
Governor's Landing 5K was also in this year. Coven, a full-time
Williamsburg runner, ran an even faster 23:13 to capture the
division. She had a slew of fast 5Ks, including the fastest
four qualifying times. In between, Priscila Prunella of Rockville, MD won the spring
at the DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K in 48:47. Betty King won the
summer (and the fourth spot) with her B&A Trail 10K in 49:47.
Prunella's 10K was just fast enough to earn her the runner-up
spot. Dee Nelson (with 1000 career races) of Gaithersburg, MD
is right behind with her Race for Mental Health 5K in 23:25
(10K = 48:51). Judy Gilbert moved out of the area but not
before earning the fifth spot for the second year. Betty Smith
of Rockville, MD is this division's BULLET. She qualified for
Boston, won the Annapolis 10M, raced an impassioned 50:59 at
the Veterans Day 10K, and will soon be ready for the next
division. In June, four of the top six runners met at the Capital
Crescent 5K. None had their best race that day. Still, the
order (King, Nelson, Prunella, Smith) promises fierce
competition.

Every year Tami Graf of Lusby, MD is the one to beat. She races
more than fifty races a year. Soon she will move on to dominate
the next division. In 2004, after winning three periods she was
upended by Ecris Williams. In 2005, Williams ran even faster at
the Plaza America 5K, 27:12. This time, she did not qualify for
the year-end ranking. Another top performer, Nancy Patron had a
fine Fall Period but only ran in that period. This left Arlowene Garland as her chief nemesis. She popped out
quickly in the first week of the year with the fastest 5K, the
Potter Homes Turkey Trot in 26:49 (10K = 55:50). If that had
not been her only race of the period, she would have won that
