2005 Summer WRR Runner Rankings

Men's Division
By James Moreland
November/December 2005
Washington Running Report

Note: The time listed at the beginning of each age group is the fastest qualifying time run by an athlete in that division. If the time is listed in bold, it is a performance by the division champion.

Open Men
FAB 5K, 14:29, 10K = 30:13
Cream rises to the top. Wilson Komen moves up two notches to the champion's spot. He had three overall wins at major races. First was the Race for the Cure 5K in 14:49 (10K = 30:54). Then he mastered the Lawyers Have Heart in 30:27. His Twilight 8K in a near record 23:58 (10K = 30:24) cemented his spot. Philippe Rolly had his best race, winning at the Cascades Fire Chase 10K in 30:40 thanks in part to C. W. Moran who photo-finished with him. Mikhail Kobohtov made his move early in the period, finishing second overall at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 31:20, ahead of Rolly (31:49). Later that month, he won the Survivor Harbor 7 Mile run in 35:00 (10K = 30:40).

Rolly made his mark when he nipped fifth place Mike Styczynski 14:57 to 14:59 at Damien's Run for Recovery 5K. He took out fourth place Jeff Olenick's 15:03. Both of these young men were originally from the Columbia area. Oh and by the way, with the top nine runners all under 16:00, eighth, ninth, and tenth in the rankings were there too. Fourth place in the race at 15:10.76, Chris Banks is oh so close to fifth in the race, Erik Kean in 15:10.82. Aaron Church at sixth place with a 15:17!

And there were other races too! Styczynski looked real good for fourth place with the Dundalk Heritage 6K in 18:35 (10K = 31:18). Then Olenick took out seventh place Michael Wardian, winning the Annapolis 10 Miler. His 51:29 (10K = 30:59) over Wardian's 52:15 (10K = 31:26) was the fastest time in years. Sty's 25:18 put him ahead of Eric Post's 25:21 for top ten finishes at the Rockville Twilight 8K. Michael Wardian's 25:36 at the race was the 60th fastest ranked time. Then Eric Post ran the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:09:01 (10K = 31:19) and nearly eclipsed Styczynski.

There are still a lot of victories crisscrossing back in forth so that one great race often makes the difference. Erik Kean ran the Twilight 8K in 25:08 and lost to Edmund Burke's 25:06. Wardian lost to Church at the Leesburg 20K.

Men 19 & Younger
Mass Mutual Innsbrook 5K Run, 15:29, 10K = 32:18
The Washington Post had an article on September 27 all about one young runner's idea that running 100 miles a week is the way to go. At 17, it seems to work quite nicely for him. Mikias Gelagle is the youth champion. In July, he ran the biggest 8K in the area and won his division in 26:02, 15th overall. One month later he was the overall winner in the slightly longer Too Hot to Trot 5M in 26:54.

Daniel Cummings had the fastest time in the division, wining the Harvest Lake 5K in 15:40. His 17:10 at the Yorktown Independence Day race and his PTC 5K Couples race at the end of August led us to wonder about the distance of the first race. Drew Abernethy is now beating his famous dad, like at the College Park Cares 10K 35:27 to 36:47. Better still, Drew is taking the third spot with his 16:11 at the Capital Crescent 5K.

The times are so inconsistent at this age it is hard to pick champions. Zac Edwards is fourth with two good races, a 16:28 FAB 5K and a Salem 10K 34:59. Charlie Celesia is next with two good ones, Mount Trashmore 8K in 27:28 and the Tom Bashara 5K in 16:49. Daniel Dewitt has a swift 16:27 at the Iron Furnace and a clunker for his second. Lance McDaniels comes out from behind the eight ball with two good 5Ks, Shawville in 16:38 and FAB in 16:44.

There were 330 ranked times among the 140 runners, of which 54 had two qualifying races.

Men 35 - 39
Photo by Brightroom.com: Michael Mann (36) eased into third place.

Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, 25:08, 10K = 31:50
Edmund Burke still runs like the Open Division runner he really is. He makes it look easy running the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in 15:38 (10K = 32:37). His 25:06 (10K = 31:50) fifth place finish at the Rockville Twilight 8K was a virtual tie with fourth place and a handshake away from the top three.

It makes little sense for Stavros Rologas. He runs the GBMC 5K on June 18 in 17:06. Then the next day, he improves to 16:48 at the Ray Lewis 5K. Michael Mann runs the Elizabeth River 6 Mile in 32:42. His Follow the Children 5K in 16:11 looks golden. On Labor Day weekend, the swift St. Agnes/Bay Cafe 5K earns Rologas a 16:00 and the runner-up spot.

For the fourth spot, Max Lockwood inches by a fast Ben Thomas. Thomas has the fastest time, running the Presbyterian 5K in 16:24 (10K = 34:13) and the most competitive race, the FAB 5K in 16:28. Lockwood has lots of MRF points with a third overall and five age group wins at 5 Major races. His best were third place age group at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 34:19 and third overall at the Hartwood 10 Mile in 57:11 (10K = 34:24).

Michael Woodman has a sixth sense about his last placing in the submasters. Things will be getting better. He ran two 10Ks in 34:35, a 7-mile race at a 34:37 10K pace, and finally his last submasters venture, the Harris Teeter Leesburg 20K in 73:13 (10K = 34:57).

Photo by Brightroom.com: Topless Max Lockwood continued to improve and ranked fourth in a competitive division.

Men 40 - 44
Photo by Brightroom.com: Chris Sabatini (40) moved up five places to the number eight division spot.

Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, 1:11:54, 10K = 32:37
John Piggott turned forty and it looks as if we have a new masters champion. In his first try at the masters 5K, he took down Rob Hinkle at the Yorktown 5K 16:02 to 16:03. That was gravy for Piggott, known for his marathon prowess, but Hinkle still had the best 5K time at Follow the Children in 15:58.

The Stickman, Mark Stickley, was not getting his due, racing in the shadows down in southwest Virginia. His Run Through History 10K runner-up spot in 33:47 hardly got much notice. Then bang, Stickley lit a fire, winning the always competitive Harris Teeter Leesburg 10K in 33:08.

Michael Woodman turned forty and headed for Annapolis. He busted a fourth overall, masters win in 55:36 (10K = 33:37) and the chase was on. Piggott ran a more pedestrian 56:47 at the smaller WaWa Hartwood 10 Mile the same day but missed the overall win by just five seconds. Hinkle was skidding to a halt that weekend at the Cheatham 6K in 20:45 (10K = 35:35).

Last weekend of the period, time to take out all the stops. Woodman doubled his stakes at the Charm City 20M, again finishing fourth overall and top master. His time was 1:56:34 (10K = 33:30). Piggott stirred things up with an exciting Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:11:54 (10K = 32:37) and we had a new champion.

Mark Stickley's Leesburg makes him runner-up and Hinkle's 5Ks, coupled with a fine Rock 'n' Roll HM in 1:14:28 (10K = 33:47), nudged Woodman to fourth. Dave Berardi ran the Race for our Kids 10K in 34:11 and a couple of 5Ks that matched Mark Hoon's Capital Crescent of 16:29. He clinched fifth with a head-to-head win at the Twilight 8K, 27:39 to 27:47.

Men 45 - 49
Bel Air Town Run 5K, 16:06, 10K = 33:35
Greg Cauller takes back the reins from Jim Hage with an impressive string of 5K victories. Both have an impressive MRF. Cauller earned his with just four races. His three 5Ks were the top three times in the division. His Bel Air Town Run in 16:06 set the standard in June breaking his overall win at the McVets 5K in May at 16:07. Incredibly, he also ran the McVets 10K the very same day, finishing second overall in 34:28.

Hage, a long time journalist who will be writing a regular running column for the Washington Post, seems so laid back. It is hard to believe that he has run three or more miles a day for more than fifteen years. Now in his mid forties, he ran his slowest Annapolis 10 Mile ever, 57:22 for eighth overall. His fastest race was another age group victory at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 34:13.

It is the same top six, but with a little change in order. George Buckheit has been at the track training fiercely. It paid off handsomely, earning him top honors at the Race for the Cure in 16:23 (10K = 34:11). In early July, he handed Hage a rare defeat at the Cure Autism Now 5K, 16:31 to 16:39. Hage did not get mad; he got even at the Rockville Twilight 8K 27:22 to 27:35, also the slowest 8K he has run there.

George Buckheit fans, of which there are many, might suggest the number two spot might not be too generous for George. Hage's worst race of five was a 34:47 Run Through History 10K. Buckheit went longer for number five at the Riley's Rumble HM in 1:28:48 (10K = 38:58), surely just a training run.

Dan Lawson moves up a slot with his second place finish at the Race for the Cure 5K in 16:37. James Bates moves up as well with his Elizabeth River 6 Mile win in 33:37. This relegates Mark Malander to sixth place as he backed up to Hage 's win at Lawyers Have Heart with a 35:03.

Men 50 - 54
SPCA 5K, 16:47, 10K = 35:01
We all knew we were going to see Chuck Moeser again. It was no surprise that he returned at the Harris Teeter Leesburg 10K. He looked smooth coasting to a 35:42 victory on a hot day for a season's best time. At Annapolis, he looked sharp on the coolest and wettest day in a long time. His 58:38 set the standard.

Meanwhile Spring champion Stephen Chantry spent the summer working on his short game. He had a flurry of fast 5Ks challenging the Moeser's standard from January (16:37). His best race of the period was Richmond's SPCA 5K in 16:47. By the end of the summer, he had his mile down to 4:46 and a head-to- head duel was in order.

Labor day weekend the two met at the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. Moeser was comfortable having already set the standard on Chantry's home course in February. Moeser had run 1:17:31 on the rolling Colonial HM course. The battle was competitive until about ten miles, when Moeser stopped briefly for an equipment check. After that, Chantry pulled away, winning in 1:17:35. Stay tuned as the two warriors had huge races the next week, the first race of the fall period.

Paul Peterson usually does better the longer the race. He starts out easy and just gets faster as the race develops. The Leesburg 20K is an exception taking over the hottest race of the year honors usually given to the Twilight 8K with runner-up honors at the Annapolis 10 Miler. Peterson cashed in on two smaller-sized ten milers. At the Chestertown Tea Party he ran 60:32 and the RASAC Gunpowder Neck he produced a 62:15 to earn third place.

James Cooper had the next fastest time, winning at the Capital Crescent 5K in 17:38. Richard Adams won the Tim Harmon 5K in 17:57. Then the two met in Potomac in July for the Cure Autism Now 5K. Adams wrested the fourth spot with a 17:43 to 17:59 victory.

Men 55 - 59
Commonwealth Games 5K, 18:13, 10K = 38:00
Last ranking period was tough. Would there be vindication? The first weekend in June, Mick Slonaker ran Bel Air in 19:05 and Jim Wright ran the Capital Crescent in 18:51. In July, Slonaker stepped up to 18:55 and Wright slipped back to 19:10.

When they were lining up at the Twilight 8K, Ronnie Wong was all aquiver thinking this would be his day to beat the Mick. The usually horrible weather was not aided by thunder and lightning. Everybody was having an off day. Wong scooted past a struggling Slonaker, who finished in 32:36. After the race, he was deflated to learn that the man two strides ahead of him was this guy Jim Wright, 32:11 to 32:13.

Southern Virginia came to the rescue. Doc Weiss ran an 18:13 5K at the Commonwealth Games, nipping the year's best set by Rick Platt at Walsingham All Comers meet in 18:13.8. Weiss also ran 18:31 at Shawsville, negating five other good races by Platt who had hoped for an entry-level position as division champion.

Always runs a good ten miler, Slonaker blasted the Annapolis race in 65:00 to settle Ronnie Wong (67:47) and his ten age group wins back a few places to eighth. Larry Coley is fourth with a major 5K win in 18:47. Jim Wright is fifth on the strength of his many wins.

Daniel Ennis is next. His Lucy Corr 5K in 18:41 comes as a deceptively fast course. His next fastest race was a 19:39. Many of the Richmond area races note that they are not certified.

Cascades Fire Chase 10K, 38:46
Patrick Griffith ran a pending Virginia State Record 18:29 at the Navy Federal 5K. Jason Page has a pending Maryland State record 18:26 at the Frederick Fair 5K, but enough about the fall. How can you keep setting records and still have runners nipping at your heels? Sure Griffith is the consensus division winner for the umpteenth time. Sure, he has eight distance records this year and has won his division at more than a dozen distances. Now, the top twenty-five times include four runners who can bust a 19:00 5K.

The gap is closing. Griffith's best race was a win at the Cascades Fire Chase10K in 38:46. Griffith silenced for a moment Jason Page's chances with a head-to-head at the Rockville Twilight 8K 30:41 (10K= 38:55) to 31:49 (10K = 40:22). Ed Lecates was pushed back to third at the same race in 32:55 (41:45) but then the following month Page ran an 18:40 (38:56) at the Stonewall Jackson 5K. In September, Ed Lecates ran an 18:36 at the St. Agnes/Bay Cafe 5K. That is a 38:48 10K equivalent.

John Kirkpatrick is the man in Annapolis. His best 5K win in 19:46 edges Jim Noone's 20:02 runner-up spot at the Tim Harmon 5K. At the Annapolis 10 Mile Kirkpatrick dispatched Noone 69:05 to 77:00. That was not typical of Noone. Also, Piraya Pinit won the division and will soon be heard of more.

John Haubert was on a mission, racing fourteen times during the period, including ten age group wins. His best race was the Orioles Advocates 5K in 20:16.

Photo by Brightroom.com: Malcolm O'Hagan (65), ranked fourth, was the class of the field at the 10-mile distance.

Damien's Run for Recovery 5K, 20:28, 10K = 44:42
John Elliott ran a pending state record 20:28 at Damien's Run for Recovery. Since then he ran even faster but that takes us into September. In May, he won the second of the races at the McVets in 21:02. The next two spots get interesting. Cal Fowler is back on the prowl. He competes against Skip Mullaney in the Charlottesville area. Both won two races. Both beat each other.

Cal Fowler gets the lean because, though his loss at the Charlottesville Independence Day 5K 20:53 to 20:56 was the fastest times for the two, he ran the Glenn Piper 5M in 35:00 minutes also. He defeated Mullaney at the Chicken 5 Mile 35:20 to 36:51 more recently (8/20). Mullaney's third race was the Fairview 5K in 21:48.

Malcolm O'Hagan makes a case for moving up soon too. He ran a fine Lawyers Have Heart 10K in June at 44:50, besting fifth place Steve Forman's 45:51. Foreman returned the favor in the stellar heat of August at Leesburg, finishing second in 47:28 to 47:59. Sixth place Lloyd Blackwell made his division debut with the win in 47:00. O'Hagan secured his spot with his Annapolis 10 Miler in 73:15 (10K = 44:04) ahead of Forman's 78:35. Forman rebounded from that at the Potomac Valley Games 5K the next week in 21:24 (10K = 44:38).

Men 70-74
Yorktown Freedom 5K, 22:01, 10K = 45:56
There is no ray of hope for the other runners. Jack McMahon is abandoning ship and turning seventy-five. Terrence McCarthy is cheerful enough having just entered the group and is enjoying the newfound art of winning his age group.

Tom Ray just overmatches these guys. Ray owns nearly all the best times for distances from 5K to HM. He blistered a scorching 22:01 (10K = 45:56) at the Yorktown 5K. In a head-to- head with second place Chris Catoe at the Elizabeth River 6 Mile, he set the record straight, racing 44:42 to 48:53. Catoe's best race, at Mount Trashmore, was an 8K in 39:10 (49:23).

National Race for the Cure 5K, 25:08, 10K = 52:26
Only one of the seven runners from the last period came out to play. That was Philip Zenchoff and he won seven of the ten races he ran. In this division, almost every race is an age group win. Joe Rutkowski earns the crown with a big race at Annapolis in 1:42:43 (10K = 61:48).

Ferris Portner ran the SPCA Run for Shelter 5K in 29:39 (10K = 61:51). Rutkowski's second argument was the Dundalk Heritage 6K in a 10K equivalent 61:56, while Portner's other race was the Civitan 10K in 63:31.

Men 80 & Over
Tim Harmon 5K, 28:53, 10K = 60:12
Paul Lackey has been resting. For the last couple of years, Walt Washburn has been out setting world records and running more than fifty races a year. He has won his division in more than ten different distances three years running. It gets harder to rest up when you reach eighty. So Walt only ran twelve races this summer at rankable distances. And he won ten of them.

Paul Lackey met him twice. At Lawyers Have Heart, Lackey's 61:48 was nearly a mile ahead of Washburn. At Tim Harmon 5K, Lackey ran 28:53 against Walt's best race of the period (31:47). Oh yeah, Walt remembers the good ol' days when he was only 81 and he ran 28:10. Get some rest, Walt. Alvin Guttag is still out there churning along with that booming voice of his. "Looking good!"
