 The Heat of the Summer Cannot Slow the Running Boom 2008 WRR Summer Rankings (May 20, 2008 through September 1, 2008) November/December 2008 For the Washington Running Report
Normally fall and spring are the busiest seasons. This summer,
races increased more than 20% to more than 94,000 runners
racing in 250 races for more than 3,600 ranked times. More than 133 teens earned rankings. Thirty-three races were major races (500 or more finishers).
Eleven races had more than 50 ranked runners racing in them.
This year the heat knocked a lot of fast times out of the big
races. The Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K led again, with 188
ranked times versus 190 from last year. The Annapolis 10 Mile
with 107 was about the same as last year. The Rock 'n' Roll HM
with 16,000 finishers was not quite as large as last year and
dropped back to 60 elite finishers. Blame the heat. The huge
Lawyers Have Heart was again the top 10K with 82 ranked times.
Finally, on a "cool" day in August, combining the 10K and 20K
run at Leesburg, there were 137 ranked runners. The Capital
Crescent 5K had the top percentage among the top 30 races.
Kentlands-Lakelands had the most ranked runners in a 5K with
70. One hundred forty-two of the races during the 104 days of
summer were 5Ks. This summer, 1339 different men and 1679 different women ran at
least one qualifying time, with women increasing their lead
over the men in participation. Three hundred seventy-six men
and 297 women were ranked. Washington, DC had but six races but they were the second and
fourth largest events. Maryland had 129 races with the largest
groups being in Baltimore (15), Columbia (11), and Annapolis
(10). The larger state of Virginia had 116 races, Richmond
taking the lead with nine races. This time the open divisions were really packed, with 58 women
and 54 men. "Open," of course, includes runners of any age able
to meet the open 10K equivalent standard twice: 34:20 for men
and 41:15 for women. At 46, Mark Stickley was the oldest male.
The women had two 50-year-olds, Lee DiPietro and Leisa Villani.
The top teen male was 27th. The top male from another division
as well is Philippe Rolly in 22nd place. For the women, eighth
place Aurora Scott (18) edged Alisa Harvey for the top runner
from another division. Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn
an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an
asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone (reported at the
top of each division) is the fastest qualifying time run for
each division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. Now let's see who made the top.
