 Winter Racing at an All-Time High 2007 WRR Winter Runner Rankings By James Moreland May/June 2007 For the Washington Running Report
Running is alive and healthy. This winter nearly 50,000 racers
were on the road again. That is 50% more than last year. As
usual, Turkey Day is the big race day. This year there were 20
races that day, three with more than 2,000 participants. Then
in December, it went from 24 races in 2005 to 41 races. The
Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K, in its second year,
was tied with the surging Celtic Solstice 5M with 65 ranked
times. The 10K was the larger race. The Alexandria Turkey Trot
5M was the third biggest race but had the most ranked runners
at 79. The Virginia Run Turkey Trot was only ten runners back
and fourth with 64 ranked runners. The Red Ribbon 5K had the
second highest percentage of ranked runners of the 25 major
races (more than 500 Runners). The top king maker race was the
GW Birthday 10K with nearly 10% of the field making ranked
status. Even with all the warm weather in January, none of the 31 races
had 500 finishers. Still, more than a third of them had 10% and
as high as 20% of their finishers in the elite runner category.
By February, there were even more races but nearly all were
smaller. The Colonial HM produced the most runners and the
second most ranked times. In less than two weeks in March,
there were not many races but it was clear that runners were
getting ready for the huge power races of the spring. Kelly's
Shamrock 5K was on the last day and had nearly 3,000 finishers.
Considering that a number of races such as the RRCA Challenge
10 mile were canceled due to weather, the winter season was a
huge success. Seven races had more than 1,000 finishers. All the major
distances were represented. More than 49,000 times were sorted
through the system to determine the rankings. Forty-eight races
had more than 20 qualifying times. The top 14 races had more
than 40 qualifiers. Parity increases as 795 different men and 722 different women
ran at least one qualifying time. Two hundred eighty-nine men
and 234 women were ranked. Generally, the women's numbers fall
off in the older ranks. The women's division had 55 open
runners. The men stay consistent through age 60, which is often
the largest division (45 runners). The teen division is
growing, with 35 and 34 for the men and women respectively. In
all of the races, 5.04% of the finishers were ranked runners. Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn
an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an
asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone is the fastest
qualifying time run for each division. In bold, it means
the division champion ran it.
