 The Season of the Long Races 2008 WRR Fall Runner Rankings By James Moreland January/February 2009 For the Washington Running Report
The second biggest ranking period of all time, behind this
year's monster spring, with 116,000 runners, shows the running
boom continues as runners ignore the "recession." This period
matched the spring with the lowest percentage of ranked runners
(2.58%). And with 289 races during the 75 days of the ranking
period, that averages nearly four races for every day of the
period. The Marine Corps Marathon and Army 10-Miler were the largest
races with more than 18,000 finishers in each. The Under Armour
Baltimore Festival with a 5K, half marathon, and a marathon
combined for the third highest race total of more than 11,000
and 136 ranked runners. In November, the SunTrust Richmond
Marathon with the new half marathon and nTelos 8K had the
fourth highest race total of 10,076 with 155 ranked times. Major races, those with 500 or more runners, increased to 133
this year and 33 in the fall period. For the 10K, only four
were major races. The Marine Corps was the largest with 3,633
finishers; the Veterans Day had the most ranked runners by far
with 90. There were 11 major 5Ks out of 152. They were led by
the United Way 5K with more than 2,300 and the Arlington 9-11
with 2,000. nTelos was again the king with four times as many
runners as any other 8K and had 82 ranked runners. With a dozen half marathons, four were major. Baltimore had
nearly twice as many as Richmond and three times the runners as
Parks. Even with horrid running conditions, Parks was by far
the tops with 65 ranked runners.
Still the biggest, Army had more runners than all the other 10
milers combined. For the first time ever, there were fewer ranked runners than
the year before, albeit only ten fewer than 2007. Nine hundred
twenty-seven different men and 799 different women ran at least
one qualifying time. Two hundred seventy-seven men and 266
women were ranked. One hundred fourteen runners qualified for
the elite Open Division.
Washington, DC boasted 19 races. Maryland had 104 races with
the largest groups being in Columbia (11). The larger state of
Virginia had 166 races, Richmond taking the lead with ten,
Virginia Beach and Fairfax each had eight. Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn
an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an
asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone (reported at the
beginning of each division) is the fastest qualifying time run
for each division. In red, it means the division champion ran
