2007 Fall WRR Runner Rankings
By James Moreland with Photos by Brightroom January/February 2008 For the Washington Running Report
Allen Carr (24) of Herndon, VA burst onto the racing scene with
blazing speed, finishing the Veterans Day 10K in fourth with
30:34.
Open Men
Baltimore Half Marathon, 1:04:34, 10K = 29:18Gurmesa Mergessa (28), who raced extensively in Washington as
Gurmessa Kumsa last year, is back. He finished third overall at
the rolling Rockville 10K in 30:06. Stephen Crane of Silver
Spring, MD was next in 30:55. He won it last year in 30:43.
Then in November, Mergessa went to the fast Veterans Day 10K
where he had won last year in 30:14. He was second of three
runners to break the old record, set by Lemma Bonsa in 1999 at
30:06, finishing in 29:57. Dagne Alemu of Silver Spring, MD won
the race in 29:55 and took the division crown. His other race
was the 14:58 victory the following week at the King of the
Road 5K again just ahead of Mergessa (15:03). Crane ran fifth at Veterans in 30:57 and 15:19 at King of the
Road, always nearby the Africans. Allen Carr of Herndon, VA ran
Veterans in 30:34 just fast enough to move Crane back a place
to sixth. Carr also finished fourth at the Star Kid 8K in
24:45. Mergessa dominated that race in 24:06. Many of the top
races had excellent times run by out-of-towners or as the only
race for a runner. Not so for fourth place Ezkyas Sisay. He won
five races outright and his age group five more, finishing Star
Kid in 24:33 for second place. His best race was runner-up at
the Parks HM in 1:07:18. David Chemomei's 52:28 overall win at the Lynchburg 10 Mile was
barely in the top 25 times but he was using that as a stepping-
stone for the fastest marathon of the period. He won Richmond
in 2:20:20, which had him in third in the division right behind
Mergessa. Seventh place Jaron Hawkins of Frostburg, MD was hard
to place. He was third overall at the Marine Corps Marathon in
2:25:34. The next three runners had slightly faster times than
that at the half marathon. The western Maryland star again won
the Great Allegany 15K in a sizzling 45:48. Eighth place goes to Jason Spong of Norfolk by a hair at the
Fleet HM in 1:08:05. Ninth place Michael Wardian was next at
Parks in 1:08:08 with Birhanu Wukaw of Takoma Park, MD
finishing 20 seconds behind him there.

Parks Half Marathon, 1:07:18, 10K = 30:32The division was a monster with 327 qualifiers. Ezkyas Sisay of
Washington, DC again decimated the division. All of his nine
races were age group wins. Three were overall wins. His only
race slower than 32:20 was a pedestrian Home Run 10K in 34:37.
At that race, the teen women's winner, Belainesh Gebre, won in
34:38. You do the math. In October, he ran the top 5K for teens winning Susie's Cause
outright in 14:48. But he already owned the fastest time in the
division with his second place finish at the Parks HM in
1:07:18. Nick Bax of Bethesda, MD ran a nice 16:09 at the PVI
Runfest but that would not get it done for the runner-up spot.
Gregg Jubb of College Park, MD just missed the course record
winning the Rockville 5K in 16:02 and followed it the next week
with a 33:32 Veterans Day 10K, which earned third in the
rankings. Bax ran the surprisingly fast Cardinal 5K course in
15:41 for second overall. In his last teen era race, William Garland of Annapolis, MD
moved to fourth with a 16:12 hometown 5K. That combined with
his 16:22 Halloween 5K, second overall, just squeezed him ahead
of Dante Morales of Fairfax, VA. He had run 16:13 for second
overall at Stone Ridge. His hometown Halloween run was the
Goblin Gallop in 16:27.

Marine Corps Marathon, 2:24:20, 10K = 30:58Michael Colaiacovo (38) of Baltimore, MD uses two top 5Ks
finishes to narrowly earn the division crown. They were the
only 5Ks in the top 12 ranked times. The race was so close with Michael Colaiacovo of Baltimore, MD
running second overall at the Habifest 5K in 16:26 (10K =
34:17) and Robert Wolfe, albeit ninth in his division at Army,
running 57:01 (10K = 34:18). Using the Moreland Racing Factor
(MRF), Colaiacovo wins easily with 63 versus Wolfe's 26.
Colaiacovo also won outright the Fall Into Fitness race in
16:30 while Wolfe broke two hours at the National Capital 20
Mile. The next spot was a little odd. At the end of September, Duncan
Sheils of Glen Allen, VA ran the slowest qualifying time
possible though he was the overall winner of the Annabelle's
Angels 5K. Then in November he popped an excellent 27:05 at the
nTelos 8K for the third fastest time among qualifiers. After
that, it was pretty easy as the next three runners were all
competing with their best race at the Parks HM led by Rob
Magin's 1:16:10.

Baltimore Marathon, 2:33:59, 10K = 33:03Five of top six runners did not show for the fall. In fact, the
prolific John Piggott of Williamsburg, VA only ran two races to
regain the crown. He warmed things up in September with a
masters win at the Hampton 10K in 34:18. Andres Wright of
Frederick, MD won top masters cash at the competitive PVI
Runfest in 16:14 and set the table with his Home Run 10K in
33:40. He later added a 33:52 second overall finish at the
Rockville 10K. Chris Hamley of Hyattsville, MD started the half marathon surge
at Parks in 1:16:21. Chris Chattin matched that to the second
at Baltimore but little more than an hour later the division
crown was lost to them. Piggott scorched the Under Armour
Baltimore Marathon in 2:33:59 for another win. Hamley was a
distant third there in 2:43:40. Three weeks later he came back
strong in Richmond with 2:40:35 but was third again as Matt
Richards of Lynchburg, VA unleashed a monster 2:37:10 to win.
That moved him up quite a few places from where his 58:04 10
miler had him resting. Tom Purcell of Chesapeake, VA ran the Fleet HM in 1:16:31. Then
on the last day of the period, he moved up to fifth place with
his 57:25 Cape Henry 10 Mile. Chattin's second best race was at
the PVI Runfest in 17:16.

Fleet HM, 1:15:17, 10K = 34:09Jean-Christophe Arcaz (47) of Rockville, MD seems too large
a runner to race so swiftly. He saved his best effort (35:38 at
Veterans Day 10K) at the end of the period to make the top five.
The PVI Runfest 5K is always tough. After all, masters cash
goes five deep. Four of the top six runners raced there in mid
September. Greg Cauller of York, PA led the charge with 16:43.
Dave Berardi of Baltimore, MD was next in 16:53. The venerable, soon to be 50, Jim Hage of Kensington, MD was
third in 17:03. Stuart Pineo of Columbia, MD did not even make
the money with a swift 17:22. Berardi is never happy with second. So the following week he
took out runners of all ages for an overall win in 16:42 at the
Victim's Fund race. Take that. Pineo decided he needed some
more track work and PVTC provided the venue for his 16:54
victory the week after, moving him up to third. Hage ran his
traditional Back to School 8K in 28:23 for second overall. He
missed Kensington this year so Jean-Christophe Arcaz of
Rockville, MD hustled down to take his place, winning these in
28:27. Cauller was beginning to see a trend. He went to Army in
October and recruited a fine 57:07 to win the division. Later
in November, he added a swift Zoo Zoom 5M in 27:55 to clarify
his position. That left Berardi as runner-up. November started
with David Haaga of Rockville, MD defeating Arcaz 35:16 to
35:44 at the Rockville 10K to move into the fourth slot. Arcaz
rebounded the following week at the Veterans Day 10K which Hage
was reporting. Arcaz ran a swift 35:38 to nudge Hage back one
place to sixth.

Hilton 5K Run, 16:50, 10K = 35:07In the past, the main threat to Stephen Chantry's crown came
from the north. Now he is besieged from all over. To start the
period, his regular escort, Jim Bates of Hampton, VA, took top
billing at the Hampton Bay Days 10K 36:02 to 36:23. A month
later, Chantry was second overall as he jetted home at the
Hilton 5K in 16:50. Bates was back in his dust again with
17:22. The day before that, Maurice Pointer of Baltimore, MD had
roughed up the NCR Trail HM in 1:18:04 a week before cruising
Montgomery County at the Parks HM in 1:19:45. Chantry tended to
Bates again at the William and Mary Homecoming, winning in
17:29 but not really shaking him all the way loose. No matter. Pointer was headed for a showdown in Richmond.
Chantry prevailed 27:51 to 28:07. Dan Lawson of Gaithersburg,
MD ran a solid 28:18 at the Kensington 8K but was not really
challenging for the title even after he banged three low 17s
for 5K in November, twice 17:11. Chantry had a 16:59 overall
win in September to hold off Pointer. Then from out of the south came Pete Gibson of Murfreesboro,
NC. He bested Bates and everyone else to win the Race for
Breath 5K in 17:56. With Chantry relaxing with his division
title intact, both Bates and Gibson sandwiched him the last day
of the period at the Governor's Land 5K. Gibson won the race in
17:08 to capture third in the division away from Lawson. Bates
could not quite pass Chantry, following him home 17:13 to 17:16. That is a record two grandmaster losses in the same period for
Chantry, which should make him work a little harder still in
defending his crown, while giving hope to the pretenders.

Cardinal 5K, 16:59, 10K = 35:26Last fall Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA had eight age groups
wins but lost the title to Bill Taylor of Woodbridge, VA who
ran 61:44 to win Army. Taylor returned to win Army
imperceptibly slower at 61:48. This time Platt was ready with
an answer. He sped up. He added his own 10 miler at Yorktown in
61:14 to win the division. At nTelos, he fended off newcomer
Tom Ruckert of Grantsville, MD 29:25 to 30:01, improving
greatly over last year's 31:03. Taylor also ran the Richmond
Marathon in 3:01:54. Ruckert, whose older brother Steve is in the process of making
a comeback, ran the Great Allegany 15K in 59:14, which is the
same pace as his best 5K and slower than nTelos. This shows
that some runners do NOT benefit that much from pure downhill. No, Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD, last period's champion, was
not resting on his laurels. He raced the second fastest half
marathon at Parks (1:25:32) behind Platt's Mulberry Island
(1:23:54) to get ready for his marathon bid. He ran a very
solid Baltimore Marathon in 3:09:47. Steve Bognar of Lynchburg, VA ran an effervescent Pepsi 10K in
39:05 to hold off a revived Dan Eddy for fifth place.

American Family Fitness 10K, 40:17Prolific racer William Scott (60) of Glenarden, MD always
has a smile on his face. Now that he is in the new division, he
is celebrating even more age groups wins. Jason Page of Hamilton, VA was a little off his game but
started the period with a solid Great Frederick Fair 5K in
19:42. The next day Ronnie Wong of Catonsville, MD set the 5K
standard for the period, racing 19:40 at the Police Pace 5K.
Wong had 18 age group wins last period. This fall he had a mere
13. Wong spent the first month winning shorter races, including the
Bachmann Valley HM against third place Ed Lecates of York, PA.
Then in one month he banged out five marathons. It all started
with a win at Marine Corps Marathon (3:20:09). He was also
first at the Richmond Marathon (3:16:10) for his fastest race
and at the Northern Central Trail Marathon, which was his
slowest win, in 3:23:37. Interspersed, he ran New York
(3:23:27) and Philadelphia (3:16:35). John Kirkpatrick of Annapolis, MD earned second place narrowly
with his slightly long course, the Down's Park 5 Mile in 32:40.
Lecates came back at the end of the period with his Zoo Zoom 5M
in 32:28, which is virtually the same pace. Kirkpatrick's
second race was a Baltimore HM in 1:31:48 versus Lecates' hilly
Bachmann Valley HM in 1:35:22. Bill Joyce had a solid Army 10 Miler win in 68:55 for fifth
place.

Maryland Senior Olympics 5K 20:05 -10K = 41:54In the large 60-64 division, Stephen Banks (61) of
Springfield, VA moves up to 31st place with a fourth place
finish at Veterans Day in 46:33. Lou Shapiro of Silver Spring, MD did not do anything wrong this
period. He won 11 of the 13 races he ran, setting new Best of
2007 standards. He raced all distances, with his best race
being the Police Pace 5K in 20:33 to begin the period. He won
his division at the Parks HM, then the National Capital 20
Mile, gearing up for the Marine Corps Marathon. He ran that in
3:31:21. He already knew that Jim Becker of Greencastle, PA had
run 3:31:17 at Baltimore. Becker takes the title with his impossibly swift 5Ks. Two weeks
after his marathon, he ran 20:17. By the end of the period, he
had lowered the standard to 19:43. None of the top 39 times was
run against another runner in the division. Shapiro's third best time at Parks was 1:35:25. That topped
third place Sam Going of Moneta, VA who started the competition
with the Danville HM in 1:35:39. John Haubert of Alexandria, VA
is gaining strength and confidence. He ran his two fastest 5Ks
the same weekend, improving to 20:54 at the Run for Research in
November. Bobby Spencer of Daleville, VA stole fifth place the last

Fleet HM, 1:41:27, 10K = 46:02This division is in pure turmoil. Former champion Tom Ray of
Kitty Hawk, NC is in the twilight year (74) and moves
back to sixth racing the Hampton Bay Days 10K in 48:09. Skip
Grant of Silver Spring, MD is back but not yet up to full
strength, though he bested Richard Williams at Veterans Day
47:59 to 49:39. It was not one of Williams's better races. In
fact, he had eight age group wins with faster times. Indeed,
race winner Chan Robbins of Arlington, VA did not win his
number two spot, winning that race in 47:13. Robbins popped off
a couple of fast 5Ks, including the second fastest of the year
in DC with 22:17 along with his eight age group wins. Williams, who has since moved to California with his new bride
Jane (Poole) Williams, waited for the last day of the rankings
to unleash a monster 37:11 Best of 2007 5M at the Semper Fit to
glide into third in the division. Duane Lougee of Norfolk, VA
warmed up setting track records this summer. Then he got in
contention racing the Neptune 8K in 37:50 in September. Mid-
October he boldly took away the crown, winning the Fleet HM in
1:41:27.

Baltimore Half Marathon, 1:56:02, 10K = 52:39George Yannakakis of Baltimore, MD had the fastest race but
only one race for the period. That should have made it easy for
Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD to remount the podium. Edward
Green of Washington, DC ran an inspired 9-11 5K in 25:22 to
start the period. McMahon matched that a week later with at the
PVI Runfest 5K in 25:33. The division settled back to normal at
the Veterans Day 10K when McMahon won in 53:22, well ahead of
Green's 62:44 and Charles Day's 66:08. Larry Dickerson of
Burke, VA is starting to race again, moving up to third with
his Goblin Gallop 5K in 26:48.

Rockville 10K, 56:23Again, John Hosner's Galax 5K was his only race. This year, his
time of 27:22 was not the fastest effort. Nianxiang Xie of
Rockville, MD gave his hometown crowd a show blasting a 56:23
on the, not all that flat, Rockville 10K course. He had already
proven himself on the definitely rolling Home Run 10K in 58:20. Wendell Golden of Charlottesville, VA took out third place
Harry Freestone of Keswick, VA at the Pepsi 10K 1:09:36 to
1:14:35. Walt Washburn of Vienna, VA, who has American records
for the really long races, has settled for 5Ks as he turned 85
for this period.
