2008 Fall WRR Runner Rankings

Men's Division

January/February 2009
For the Washington Running Report

Open Men
Army 10-Miler, 49:12, 10K = 29:36

Alex Eversmeyer (27) of Gaithersburg, MD appeared on the scene with a smashing overall win at Ellen's 5K in 15:31 to earn 25th in the Elite Division.

Abiyot Abebe (21) of Silver Spring, MD was overpowering without seeming aggressive at all in his races. His style was more playful. He seemed at ease when he coasted home in 14:37 in the stacked field at the PVI Runfest 5K, good enough for only fourth. Third place Dagne Alemu in 14:27 already had a leg up. Later that month he was again fourth at the hilly Home Run 10K in 31:09 with Alemu ahead in 30:55.

That same weekend David Chemomei repeated as champion at the Lynchburg 10M. This year he roasted his 52:28 from last year with an impressive 49:43. However, he dropped to bronze at the Richmond Marathon in 2:28:04 after winning it all last year in 2:20:20. Then came the Army 10-Miler and Steve Hallinan was runner-up in 49:12, moving him past Chemomei.

Abebe had four overall wins but nothing flashy yet. In mid October he held off Hallinan to win it all at the United Way 5K in 13:53 to 13:54. The course was short, yet Abebe was one solid win from the title. At the Fall Classic in Charlottesville he was second in 30:18. Then in November he got his race, winning the Veterans Day 10K where he broke the event record in 30:04.

The next four spots are more about second races. Jaron Hawkins filled in his Great Allegany 15K runaway overall win in 46:58 with a solid Marine Corps Marathon in 2:25:19 for the fifth spot. Former champions Stephen Crane and Wilson Komen battled for place at Veterans. Crane was runner-up in 30:31, while Komen just held off 12th ranked Bert Rodriguez 31:14 to 31:18 for third place. Komen stays close in eighth behind Crane's seventh place ranking with his 2:22:42 Baltimore Marathon. Will Christian was behind Hawkins at Marine Corps with a nice 2:27:56 but earns the sixth spot for his overall win at the Fleet Week HM in 1:07:25.

Nate Brigham outlasts Matt Barresi at Army 51:25 to 51:37 for the coveted ninth place. Fifty-two runners made the Open division.

19 & Under Men
Goblin Gallop 5K, 15:01, 10K = 31:19

Matthew Galewski (18) of Washington, DC stayed in town for three fine races including his best at the inaugural Run! Geek! Run! 8K in 29:03.

Ezkyas Sisay of Burke, VA made it look easy for the last time as he will soon be turning 20. He spent the week of Halloween in the driver's seat. He tuned up with an overall win at the Wolf Trap Howl-o-ween 5K. The next day he sauntered to a 15:01 win at the Goblin Gallop. The week before, he had been second overall at Stone Ridge in 15:21. October was very good to him. He ran what for him was a disaster of 1:10:46 at the Baltimore HM. With that in mind, he went down the Potomac to Piney Point to punish the field in a 54:27 10 mile win.

Kyle Gaffney of Silver Spring, MD ran a solid College Park Cares 5K in 16:32. Young Vernon Cody (15), showing huge promise, was runner-up at Down's Park's slightly long 5M in 26:50. Gaffney, along with two 30-somethings, Matt Straughn and Tim Schaefer, raced ahead of the field at the Rockville 10K/5K. The trouble was, as they raced for home less than 100 meters from the finish, they were directed down the 10K route. Suddenly their plans for a competitive sub-16:00 5K became a 6K race. Gaffney ran 19:05 (10K = 32:44), finishing a step or two ahead of the third of three grandmasters who had enjoyed a trip with one fewer kilometer. Cody's second race was another runner- up placing at the Cold Turkey 10K in 34:23.

35-39 Men
nTelos 8K, 23:29, 10K = 29:47

Ray Pugsley of Potomac River Running had to be considered the favorite. Opening his fifth store meant he had lots of practice running around the area. At the perhaps a little long Run for the Door 5K he finished third overall in 16:21. Regular National Anthem singer Eric Makovsky of Washington, DC joined the division, announcing with his brilliant 33:22 overall win that Pugsley would have to do better.

Pugsley would do so in November at the Star Kid 8K in 26:13. Before that race Tim Morris of Richmond, VA had run a second place overall 33:11 at the Family Fitness 10K. Good thing that Ray was at the Loudoun Series races. He took over the lead for good, finishing the Stone Ridge 5K in 15:50.

Makovsky added the Baltimore Marathon in 2:41:01 for good measure, while Morris ran half as far at Richmond in 1:14:32. Brett Mower mowed down the entire field at the Volvo Powertrain 5K to start the period in 16:27 for fourth.

40-44 Men
Ellen's Run 5K, 15:58, 10K = 33:18

Victor Papagno (40) of Hughesville, MD powered five races in less than a month - finishing with a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd overall as well as a fine Veterans Day 10K in 36:45 for 24th in the division.

Andres Wright of Frederick, MD got better as the period progressed. He dipped under 16:00 at Ellen's 5K. He needed it because, though he beat John Piggott's 16:42 at the PVI Runfest with his 16:22, he finished behind new master Mark Gilmore's 16:15. And of course we knew Piggott would be back with a fast marathon, half, or both.

Indeed the racing maniac, perhaps disappointed by his third place finish at the Baltimore Marathon in 2:38:42, raced the following day at the Lower Potomac 10 Mile. He finished second overall in 56:32, holding off third overall finisher, top ranked Open woman Belainesh Gebre.

Second master at the marathon was Steve Kartalia in 2:35:22. That time even capped his overall win at the tough Dave Herlocker Bachmann Valley HM in 1:13:50. Piggott fired back in November with the Richmond HM in 1:13:58 to pass Gilmore for third place. Also, Gilmore's half marathon in Baltimore was a more humble 1:18:55. Kartalia is naturally the champion.

Kevin Stover of York, PA is fifth with two fast 5Ks, both overall wins, including the Charge of the Knights in 16:52. Dennis Mickey of Ridgely, WV is next as first master at the precipitous Great Allegany 15K in 52:17.

45-49 Men
Veterans Day 10K, 33:21

James Coombes of Norfolk, VA started out sizzling in 16:07 at the Wounded Marine 5K and then was gone. Mark Stickley (46) of Winchester, VA answered with a solid 16:19 at the PVI Runfest and an overall win in 16:30 at the Blue Ridge Hospice 5K. Meanwhile, the confusingly short United Way 5K in Baltimore confused everything.

Sure, Dai Roberts of Virginia Beach, VA improved on his overall runner-up Neptune 8K at 27:59 at his favorite distance. His Fleet Week HM in 1:14:36 pushed him past Stickley in October. Neville Anderson ran a sparkling 16:34, ahead of Layne Party's 16:48 on the short course. Though he won four more races, his next best 5K was 18:12. Party ran a smoother Executive Stampede 5K in 16:57. Still, head-to-head gives the spot to Anderson.

But wait, Greg Cauller of York, PA runs a 58:38 at Army (fifth at the race) to pass both of them even as his second qualifier is a slow cross-country 8K in 31:10 behind Dave Berardi's 30:45. Now nobody is going to be happy. Jean-Christophe Arcaz holds off Berardi at Veterans 35:22 to 35:34 and takes the fourth spot.

Naturally, when Stickley routs the field there in 33:21, he takes the division. He cements it the following weekend as second master at nTelos in 26:26. Arcaz adds a Rockville 10K win to pad his lead on ninth place David Haaga of Parks HM fame (1:19:11). Gerrit Labuschagne of Richmond, VA, in eighth place, continues to make waves with a swift 35:54 10K in Ashland.

50-54 Men
Army 10-Miler, 58:21, 10K = 35:06

You just cannot rest on your laurels in this tough division. Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA slowed slightly, winning a 5K in each month. His best was the overall win at Mulberry Island in 17:19. He capped the period with a swift 28:50 at the largest 8K in the region, nTelos. All that fine work and he was a mere five seconds out of dropping to eighth place behind Pete Gibson (17:24), Jim Bates (17:23), and Keith McIntyre's Baltimore HM in 1:20:04.

Coming back, Dan Lawson took fourth place with 5Ks, PVI Runfest in 17:13 and the Candy Cane City in 17:22. Maurice Pointer was leading all through September with his overall win at the NCR HM in 1:18:39. His resume includes a 17:21 5K as well and he ended the period winning the Rockville 10K in 35:58.

The title came down to two races bookmarking October. Steven Anderson smashed his way to the top, winning Army in 58:21 ahead of runner-up Mark Malander's 59:10. Then Anderson saluted again at Marine Corps, trampling the division with an excellent 2:46:49 (10K = 35:48). Malander was a distant fourth there in 2:55:09. Service-oriented Anderson also ran the Navy 5M in 29:04 and the Arlington 9-11 5K to victory.

55-59 Men
Army 10-Miler, 58:32, 10K = 35:13

This division has plenty of great runners but for the fall it was one of the smallest divisions, not making a full complement of 20 qualifiers. Chuck Moeser of Sterling, VA made his annual pilgrimage to the rankings and won handily.

Bill Taylor of Woodbridge, VA ran his only race at Army slowing to 62:01 but only finished fourth there. Moeser stepped up nonchalantly and snatched the crown with a spiffy 58:32. Tom Ruckert took on the Great Allegany 15K for a fine 57:56, rolling down the mountainside. On level ground he ran a 19:06 at the Halloween 5K. Five other runners had faster 5Ks but you do still have to run the 15K, which is worth about 30 seconds per 5K over traditional courses.

Capital Running Company's Veterans Day 10K was lightning fast this year and the top dogs came out to have Moeser pull them to fast times. He did just that, winning with a smile in 35:19. Runner-up Alan Pemberton had run the heated Parks HM in 1:25:19 to put him in early contention. At Veterans he worked the whole way trying to shake loose of Richard Adams, Jr. Pemberton finished in 37:58 with Adams close by in 38:11.

From the western region, Ron Knepper of Waynesboro, PA has saddled up to ride again. He had a couple of nice 5Ks, including a Volvo Powertrain race in 18:26. That kept him just ahead of a blossoming Paul Bousel of Alexandria, VA who ran the Race for Research in 18:37.

60-64 Men
Police Pace 5K, 19:12, 10K = 40:03

Michael Kush (63) of Burke, VA took a bronze at the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K in 47:15 to earn 32nd in the large and tough 60-64 division.

Bill Joyce took on the hot and humid Parks HM in a commendable 1:30:55. Then he took a break. That effort would not have been enough. Ronnie Wong, only 120 pounds dripping wet, has run 15 marathons this year, winning most of them, such as Marine Corps in 3:15:20. So what does he do? He blasts a Police Pace 5K in 19:12 to return as champion.

Third place Bernard Wright of Pomfret, MD followed Joyce on the misty trek from Rockville to Bethesda, finishing the Parks HM in 1:34:09. That edged him ahead of Les Bell of York, PA who had used the Fall Into Fitness 5K in 20:32 to test the waters. While third place Wright just missed doing in everyone at Army by a mere forty meters with 68:12, Bell took the silver medal spot with his Police Pace 5K in 19:36.

Jason Page of Hamilton, VA ran a solid Great Frederick Fair 5K in 19:58 to start the period. Langston Shelton of Grafton, VA poked past him, running the Hilton 5K in 19:56. Page answered swiftly running the Star Kid 8K in 32:30 to take the fourth spot. Jim Noone is grooming for the next division. He just missed the teens, running the Run for Kathy 5K in 20:01.

65-69 Men
Great Allegany 15K, 1:05:06, 10K = 42:11

Lou Shapiro of Silver Spring, MD had a great period. He started out a little slowly, finishing second to fourth place Michael Golash of Washington, DC twice, in an 8K and a 5K. Golash knows he is having a solid period when he bests Shapiro. Then Shapiro righted himself and went on to 10 age group wins. It seems every period he competes back and forth with Jim Becker of Greencastle, PA. This time it tipped to Becker.

Shapiro creamed the Great Allegany 15K roller coaster ride in 1:05:06. Becker leveled the playing field with two swift 5Ks, Citi in 20:15 and Great Frederick Fair in 20:35. Shapiro answered back with a nifty Veterans Day 10K in 42:58. Becker tipped the scales back with a powerful 1:35:42 on the very hilly Dave Herlocker Memorial Bachman Valley HM.

So Golash was looking good for third, topping out behind Shapiro at the Boo! Race for Life 10K, 44:07 to 43:40. And Richard Pane could certainly aspire to fourth with his Veterans Day finish in 44:43. Then Bobby Spencer of Daleville, VA drew away from form and uncorked a special Vinton Fall Festival 5K in 20:38 to leapfrog ahead of those two.

70-74 Men
Women of Freedom 5K, 22:18, 10K = 46:31

Blistering the 5K in 22:18 helped 71-year-old Chan Robbins of Arlington, VA remains on top of his division.

Repeat winner Chan Robbins of Arlington, VA stuck with the shorter races that have earned him his crown in the past. Nobody could get within a minute and a half of his top 5K in 22:18. He owned eight of the top 10 times. To punctuate his point, he ran a nifty 46:53 at the Boo! Run for Life 10K. Later in November he took on his top local challenger, Maynard Weyers, at the Run! Geek! Run! 8K, winning 37:00 to 38:17. The following week he took down fourth place Ken Quincy at the Veterans Day 10K 47:05 to 50:00.

At the longer distance, runner-up Duane Lougee, who hurried through the Fleet Week HM in 1:45:27, is the man to see. That was not always so. Mel Williams of Norfolk, VA is the state record holder for the marathon at age 50 in 2:37:22 and at age 60 in 2:54:45. He also knows the Marine Corps Marathon course as he is one of four runners who have run it every single year. Lougee upset his 70-year-old debut, winning 3:53:06 to 3:55:32. Williams earns fifth place.

75-79 Men
Army 10-Miler, 1:26:08, 10K = 51:50

Jerry Lewis of Reston, VA aged up and got off the sidelines. Larry Dickerson of Burke, VA had a solid race of 26:30 at the PVI Runfest 5K in September. But it was all over in October when Lewis marched home to victory at the Army 10M in 1:26:08 well ahead of fifth place Edward Green's 1:47:12. Last period's champion, George Yannakakis, ran his only race there in 1:27:11.

Former top dog Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD threw down two swift 10Ks at Rockville in 55:27 (not enough to catch Dickerson) and then at the Veterans Day ran 54:49 (just enough juice to pass into second place). Green took the second spot in both of those 10Ks. Don Simroth of Charlottesville, VA joined the period with a 58:13 Pepsi 10K for fourth.

Lewis hammered home his message winning the Richmond Marathon in 4:41:39 for a period-ending division clincher.

80 & Over Men
Galax Autumn Days 5K Run, 27:20, 10K = 57:01

John Hosner's Galax 5K was his only race for the third fall in a row. This time it was the fastest time. Amazingly, runners 80 and over had 49 races. Nianxiang Xie (81) of Rockville, MD won the division with the longer races. He owns the Rockville 10K, winning in 57:22. Earlier he ran the Army 10-Miler in 1:42:17.

Robert Gralley (82) of Parkville ran the Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K in 30:15. Then in October he set out and finished the 26.2 mile trek at the Baltimore Marathon. George Brown, a year older, finished that 5K in 39:46 for his second best race. Elder of the elders Walt Washburn (86) of Vienna, VA pumped out seven races during the period to get fourth.
