Men's Division

Washington Running Report

Open Men
Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 29:51

Gurmessa Kumsa of Oxon Hill, MD wanted to make sure he could retain the title. In the Open division, that is very hard to do. He started the period with a Run Through History 10K win in 30:20. The following week former champion Wilson Komen appeared at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K, towering over the shorter Kumsa, looking sleek as a greyhound. The gun sounded and a trio, including Urgessa Woyessa, bolted from the start. They soon roared away from a classy field, shades of Gebrselassie versus Tergat. Smooth as silk, Komen could not gain on Kumsa, who won in the fastest time of the period, 29:51 to 30:00.

It was hardly consolation that Komen three-peated at the Twilight 8K in 24:15 (10K = 30:46). It was his slowest victory with the only pressure coming from seventh ranked Chris Raabe of Washington, DC finishing in 24:44 (10K = 31:22). Raabe also fell victim to Kumsa at the Cure Autism Now 5K 15:00 to 15:15. Peter Chepkwony set the standard for the 5K, racing Damien's in 14:52 (10K = 31:01) to earn sixth place among his four wins. Ryan Deak squeezed by him with five wins, including a 14:56 5K and the Hartwood 10 Miler in 51:43 (10K = 31:07). The strength of the field was so great that Aaron Church of South Riding's 25:53 at the Twilight was only the 78th best-ranked time. Waiting until August, at the Leesburg 20K, he toasted the field in 1:04:29 (10K = 30:47) to move into fourth place.

Perhaps the most ominous runner was third place Will Christian of California, MD. While Kumsa was running a couple of 15:00 wins, he was running 15:15s in July. Then Labor Day weekend, they met at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K, a fair course though not lightning fast. Christian dropped down to 15:02 forcing Kumsa to run 14:54 for the win. The following day, Christian ventured to Virginia Beach and ran an eye popping Rock 'n' Roll HM in 1:06:53 (10K = 30:21)!

19 & Younger Men
AEP Festival Run 5K, 15:28, 10K = 32:16
Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, 25:26, 10K = 32:16

It is fitting for this largest-ever division of 77 ranked runners that the two fastest runners did not qualify, having only one race apiece. In fact, eight other sub 34:00 times were solo races. The Twilight 8K must have special appeal. An incredible 31 young men qualified for the division. Larry Contrella of Millersville, MD is the champion by way of his second place age group there in 26:08 (10K = 33:09). His second race was an easy victory at the Dawson's 10K in 33:52. Three runners had faster 5Ks than Andrew Revelle of Clarksville, MD. Only Nathan Brame of Shawsville, VA topped him for the runner-up spot, racing third overall at the Shawsville 5K in 16:08 (10K=33:39). Anderson had the fastest 5K of the period at the Bel Air Town Run in 16:06 (10K=33:35) but lost to Revelle at the Orioles Advocates 16:16 (10K = 33:56) to 16:25. Graham Bazell of Eldersburg, MD ran 16:08 (10K = 33:39) at the Rogue 5K on Labor Day but lost to overall winner Revelle at the Oakland Mills 5K in August, 16:36 to 16:56. Brame's second race was another third overall in 16:22 (10K = 34:08).

Off the top fifty times, only eleven were not 5Ks run in less than 17:00. Neal Darmody of Gaithersburg, MD celebrated turning 16 by winning his division at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 34:24. 12-year-old William Chase of Salem, VA ran 17:07 (10K = 35:42) to be the youngest male ranked runner.

35 - 39 Men
Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, 25:17, 10K = 32:04

One of the smallest divisions, the sub masters winner is really an Open division runner. Though 37, Edmund Burke of Burtonsville, MD continues to threaten to break the finish line tape. Burke missed fourth overall at Twilight by three seconds in 25:17 (10K = 32:04). A month later he was the overall winner against a stacked field at the Gary Memorial 5 Mile in 25:28 (10K = 32:07).

Max Lockwood of Washington, DC has a feeding frenzy of races, including 12 age group wins and 11 races under the 35:00 10K equivalent. Indeed, he had his best race at the Leesburg 20K, racing 1:09:11 (10K = 33:01). His lowest award was third at the Twilight behind Ray Pugsley of Potomac Falls, VA. Pugsley had four huge races, one for each month. In May, he broke the tape at the Cascades 10K in 33:29. At the Race for the Cure in June, he ran 15:30 (10K = 32:20) for second overall. At the huge Twilight 8K race his 25:42 (10K = 32:36) was good for 13th overall. Then he stood by to cheer Lockwood's finish at the Leesburg race. He had already finished third overall in a swift 32:10 in the 10K.

Michael Mann of Hampton, VA continues to climb back while battling cancer. His Elizabeth River 10K in 35:19 earned him eighth place. "Don't give up . . . don't ever give up."

40 - 44 Men
Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler, 26:43, 10K = 33:41

Ted Poulos of McLean, VA led the division with 12 age group wins. Gerrit Labuschagne humbled the competition around Richmond with nine age group wins. John Piggott of Williamsburg, VA snatched back his crown, winning eight age group titles. All of his eight races were from July 4th on. He seemed to get better as the period went on. The competition started early with newcomer David Meyer of Wytheville, VA winning the Chautauqua 5K outright in 16:34 (10K = 34:33). Third place Rodney Timpson of Baltimore, MD had already run 16:24 at MCVets 5K in May and 16:23 at the GBMC Father's Day 5K.

Piggott picked the Super Day 5K to make his move, winning the race in 16:17 (10K = 33:58). But that was not enough. The very next day, he reprised with a 16:11 (10K = 33:46) at the Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K. That should do it because Labor Day meant his specialty, the half marathon. He won in 1:14:21 (10K = 33:44). However, if he ever looked over his shoulder, he would have seen Meyer running strong, perhaps gaining on him. Meyer raced an excellent 1:14:44 (10K = 33:54) for the runner-up spot.

Timpson needed a third hot 5K to maintain his hold on the third post. At the Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K, he held off fourth place Tim Schuler of Chambersburg, PA 16:17 to 16:20 (10K = 34:04). Chris Chattin ran a couple of fine 10Ks in June for the fifth spot, including the Race for our Kids 10K in 34:14. Five other top runners ran a 10K or an 8K with a 34:37 or better for their only race.

Photo: Greg Cauller (46) of York, PA rebounds from a fourth place ranking in the spring to earn the division crown.

Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 33:55

Dave Berardi of Catonsville, MD, one of the usual top three competitors, had five age group wins, including a solid win at the Twilight 8K in 27:37 (10K = 35:02) over fifth ranked Jim Hage of Kensington, MD (28:03, 10K = 35:35) and a less inspired third place finish by Mark Malander of Herndon, VA in 28:09 (10K = 35:42). Malander had nearly secured the division in early June at the biggest 10K, crushing the competition by four minutes at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 33:55.

Berardi saved his best race for the last day of the period, racing the Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K in 16:29 (34:23), nearly catching Malander for the runner-up spot. Greg Cauller of York, PA moved up to the top spot on a single day of racing. Memorial Day he began the period at 7:30 am, finishing third overall at the MCVets 5K in 16:16 (10K = 33:56) ousting Berardi's crown ambitions. He ran 17:07 (10K = 35:42). Then, with just a few minutes of rest, Cauller doubled with the 8:30 am McVets 10K in 35:48 for another win. The following week at the Race for Our Kids 10K Cauller demonstrated what he could do with a little more rest, besting Berardi 34:03 to 35:01.

Fourth place Robert Johnson of Woodbridge, VA had six age group wins, two of which were faster than Hage's Twilight, including his best,16:59 (10K = 35:26) at the SPCA Run for Shelter 5K.

Race for our Kids 10K, 35:04

The top three runners in the division ran 11 of the top 12 races among qualifiers. From the south comes this winter's champion Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA. From Montgomery County, last period's champion Dan Lawson of Gaithersburg, MD. From the north comes the challenger, prolific racer Maurice Pointer of Baltimore, MD. None of these excellent runners have had an opportunity to race head-to-head. Most of the time, they race locally and usually 5Ks. In fact, since turning 50, the three runners have only two races longer than 10K among them.

Since turning 50, Maurice Pointer has run 23 races with only three-second age group setbacks. All three of his losses came from reticent racer James Pryde of Churchville, MD. This period, Pointer earned gold at 10 of 11 of his races. Chantry was four for four and Lawson won all three of his ventures. Of the 18 races they ran, 16 were major races.

Chantry had the fastest race in August at the Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K in 17:04 (10K = 35:36). Lawson had the next best race the last weekend of the period at Kentlands 5K in 17:08 (10K = 35:44.4). Pointer had a virtually identical second overall, yet second grandmaster, at the Check it Out 6M in 34:31 (10K = 35:44.7). Adding the Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K in 17:21 (10K = 36:12) to his three of the top five and six of the top 11 pushes Pointer over the top.

Lawson and Chantry are virtually identical, with Chantry having a small edge, enough to earn the runner-up spot. Using the Moreland Racing Factor, Chantry was 47 versus Lawson's 39. A fourth race by Lawson would most likely make their MRF identical. When using the MRF, only the top five races are used. Pointer had a MRF of 79. Impressively, his second best five races rate a MRF of 69.

Barry Skiles of Pilot, VA, back from the winter, earns the fourth spot at Chautauqua 5K in 17:33 (10K = 36:37). Norton Compton moved back up to the fifth spot with a fine Leesburg 20K in 1:17:22 (10K = 36:56).

Harris Teeter Leesburg 10K, 38:02

This division rearranged itself all over again. Mick Slonaker of Columbia, MD moved from champion in the winter to sixth in the spring. He picked the largest 10K in the area, Lawyers Have Heart, and announced to the division to come and get it. He blasted the race in 38:30 with a three minute win over the three competitors that qualified, climbing past Gerard Cabrol who was third in the division the period before. He had taken down tenth place Ronnie Wong at the Bel Air Town run the week before, 19:19 to 18:45. Later in July, he ramped up his 5K to 18:28 at the Orioles Advocates, handling 15th place William Scott as easily as he had at Lawyers.

He passed on the Twilight 8K where third place Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD had another fine race. Wright, who like all the top six runners had a minimum of four age group wins, bested fourth place Tim Morgan 31:02 (10K = 39:22) to 31:40 (10K = 40:10). Morgan's best effort was at the Capital Crescent 5K, racing 18:35 (10K = 38:46). Wright made it to that finish line nine seconds sooner for his best race in 18:26 (10K = 38:27). Last period's fifth place runner, Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA, landed the Warhill 5K in 18:37 to remain in fifth place. On Independence Day, Richard Adams, Jr. had scored well against Morgan at the Cure Autism Now 5K, 18:42 (10K = 39:00) to 19:34 (10K = 40:49). Adams had set the standard in the 5K in June at the Tim Harmon, winning in 18:16 (10K = 38:06), escorted by 11th place Dan Eddy of Alexandria, VA in 19:30 to earn the runner-up spot.

Slonaker needed either a fast time or a win over both Wright and Adams to move past them for the crown. Mid-August, at the Leesburg 10K, he did both. Adams worked hard with Slonaker in his sights the whole way but he could not close on a determined Slonaker, who won in 38:02 to 38:29. It was just enough edge in time over Wright's top race. Both Wright and Slonaker won 10 milers the last weekend in August. Wright's Hartwood race in 64:01 (10K = 38:31) was slightly faster. Slonaker's win at Annapolis in 64:32 (10K = 38:50) was in the third largest race of the period.

Photo: Krupakar Revanna (62) of Falls church, VA had his best race at the Tim Harmon Memorial 5K in 22:12.

Tim Harmon Memorial 5K, 18:34, 10K = 38:44

In the largest division older than 34, Patrick Griffith of Alexandria, VA remains the supreme commander. Only two other runners had a time as fast as any of his 14 age group wins. They won 10 of the 11 races they ran. Griffith could only reset two of his Best of 2006 times this summer. He was the overall winner at the DCRRC Age Graded 4 Mile in 25:37, only his 11th best time. He saved his best race for the match-up with runner-up Jason Page of Hamilton, VA. At the Tim Harmon 5K, he roared out in his trademark sprint start, winning in 18:34 (10K = 38:44). Page responded with a 19:06 (10K = 39:51). At Leesburg, Griffith's 10K in 38:52 was a mile ahead of second place. Page, who had the best 5K in 2005, earned second with two more swift 5Ks in 19:10 & 19:12.

Ed Lecates of York, PA is too far north to match races with Griffith. He won at four distances, 5K, 6K, 10K, and 7M. His best effort was the Dundalk Heritage Independence 6K Run in 23:24 (40:08). Ben Dyer of Colonial Heights, VA is next with the Delightfully Different 3.5 Mile in 22:40 (10K = 41:27). His 5Ks were ahead of fifth place Piriya Pinit, but Pinit nearly moved ahead with a fine win at Annapolis in 69:11 (10K = 41:38).

Look out for Ronnie Wong, who turned 60 on September 18! He was ahead of Pinit at Annapolis. Also, he has run 20 marathons since January 2005 when Griffith ran 3:09:38 at Disney. He has run three marathons faster than the best of 2006 for 60-64 Men so far this year and his time of 3:14:40 at Philadelphia in 2005 as well as four other sub 3:20s may put him in position to slow the Griffith juggernaut.

Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 42:18

John Elliott of Columbia, MD set all four of his Best of 2006 times in the cooler spring time. Then, he bookmarked the summer period with the two best times to retain his crown. In June, his Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 42:18 was just short of his year's best, 41:53 at Pike's Peek, and a half mile ahead of sixth place Steve Forman's second place finish. Then at the Kentlands 5K in September, he missed his year's best by two seconds, running 20:31 (10K = 42:48).

Collin Winston of Newport News, VA earned the runner-up spot with two swift 5Ks in mid-summer. At the Yorktown 5K, he ran 21:05 and improved to 20:59 (10K = 43:46) at the Coast Guard 5K in August. Warren Prunella of Rockville, MD had times all over the board as he is determined to race even when others would call him injured. His Capital Crescent 5K in 21:36 (10K = 45:03) was one of those feeling better days. Cal Fowler of Keswick, VA edges Jack Pitarra of Baltimore, MD by a mere four seconds in the 5-mile. Fowler ran 35:53 at the Glen Piper Challenge versus Pitarra's 35:57 at the Too Hot to Trot. Fowler's next two races were a lot faster than Pitarra's other race. Pitarra was ranked first in the winter and second in the spring.

CHKD Run for the Kids 10K, 46:46

Richard Williams has ramped up his running. He won eight of ten races. His two losses were to Jerry Lewis at the Twilight 8K by 25 seconds (both had their worst race of the period there), and at the Tim Harmon 5K in June, 23:31 to 24:04. Skip Grant had earned the runner-up spot, setting the 5K standard at the race for the Cure in 22:36 (10K = 47:09). Tom Ray had run the Elizabeth River 10K in May in 47:55. Now he needed to rebound past Grant with his best race of the period, the CHKD 10K in 46:46.

Lewis raced the Leesburg 20K in 1:41:32 (10K = 48:28) to increase his edge over Williams. Williams responded with an Annapolis 10 Mile win in 1:20:33 (10K = 48:28). It was down to the last weekend. Ray outlasted Lewis at the Rock 'n' Roll HM 1:47:05 (10K = 48:35) to 1:47:53 (10K = 48:57). Then Williams popped off two swift 5Ks to edge past Lewis. He ran the Run for Karen 5K the last day of August in 23:02 and then Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K in 22:59 (10K = 47:57).

National Race for the Cure 5K, 26:38, 10K = 55:33

This was a tough division. Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, MD had the fastest race, winning the Race for the Cure in 26:38 (10K = 55:33) in early June. Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD also had a couple of fast 5Ks. His June race was the Gaithersburg Cross Country race in 27:20 (10K = 57:01). With four age group wins and five best of 2006 times, how would he match up against Xie who had set the standard for 10 Miles at Cherry Blossom in the spring? It was a dark and muggy night at the Twilight 8K in Rockville. The younger of two locals, Jack, won handily 45:49 to 49:20 to earn the ranking's crown. Charles Day of Sterling, VA won the Lawyers Have Heart 10K for third in 61:58.

Tim Harmon Memorial 5K, 29:03, 10K = 60:36

In this most fragile of divisions, it is hard to be there all year round. After running 278 races in the last five years, Vienna's Walt Washburn sustained some injuries that kept him out of the rankings last spring. He came out this summer renewed and promptly won his division in five of six races he ran. Though nowhere near the 28:30 5K he ran when he first turned eighty, he had his best race at the Tim Harmon 5K. So did fifth place Bill Osburn. In a rare occurrence, this race had four over 80 runners, including Dixon Hemphill's only race and Paul Lackey's 29:03 (10K = 60:36), which won him the division. That race added some emphasis to his Lawyers Have Heart 10K win in 60:56 the week before. George Brown was runner-up, running the Check It Out Challenge 5K in 34:44 (10K = 1:12:27) and Larry McGovern of Virginia Beach, VA was third, racing an 8K July 4th in 61:45 (10K = 1:18:20).
