2001 WRR Summer Runner Rankings
Men's Division
Dot Collins November/December 2001 Washington Running Report
Open Men
The Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K is traditionally one of the
largest races during the summer ranking period. It is,
therefore, no surprise that it is also one of the most
influential in the rankings. Springfield's Chris Banks finished
third at the Twilighter this year, and, as a result, he runs
away with the top slot in the men's open division. Banks's 24:22
(30:55 10K equivalent) showing was his biggest and fastest race
of the summer; however, he also won the Sunrise 5K in 15:04. As
important as his time at the Rockville race, however, was whom
he beat across the line. One of those men was Tom Jeffrey, who
finished ninth at this year's Twilighter, finishing in 24:40, a
mere 18 seconds behind Banks. This, however, was a strong enough
performance to earn him the second place ranking. Jeffrey also
won the Mental Health 5K.
Montclair's Jason Van Horn cruised across the line in second
place at the (slightly short) Mental Health 5K in 14:24. He also
won both the WaWa Hartwood Ten Miler in 52:00 and the
Fredericksburg Lion's Club Heritage 5 Miler in 25:13. These
results are all compelling evidence that he should be the third
ranked runner this summer.
Fourth place in this division belongs to Michael Styczynski of
Clarksville, who at age 19 is also among the youngest runners in
this group. Styczynski earns his spot with an incredible
performance at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, finishing the
race in tenth place a mere twenty seconds behind Tom Jeffrey.
Styczynski also ran 16:10 at the Meadfest 5K and 15:48 at the
Laurel 5K.
Baltimore's Youssef Ennaciri had four overall race victories to
earn the fifth place ranking. His fastest race was a 15:12 at
the fast St. Agnes Labor Day 5K, where he ousted strong age
group competition from the likes of Eric Estrada. At the Orioles
5K, Ennaciri ran 16:10, and defeated age group rivals such as
Dan Courtney.

Men 35 - 39
The winner of the Annapolis Ten Miler--among the toughest courses
in the summer ranking period--deserves special recognition. In
2001 that man was Columbia's Chris Chattin, who won the
Annapolis race in 54:54, and, as a result, he is the top ranked
man in the men's 35-39 division. Chattin's fastest qualifying
time was a 15:42 at the Run for Recovery 5K, where he finished
fourth overall.
Williamsburg's Mark Junkerman is the second place finisher in
this division as a result of his impressive 1:13:19 at the
Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. In this race, he finished 26th
overall--a significant feat at a race that drew more than 10,000
runners. Junkerman's other qualifying time was an overall race
win at the James River Scramble.
Mark Hoon of Kensington is our third ranked runner this summer,
a ranking he well deserves for his 25:45 finish at the Rockville
Rotary Twilight 8K, as well as an overall victory at the Riley's
Rumble Half Marathon in 1:17:25, and a top five finish at the
Capital Crescent 5K.
Our fourth ranked runner earns his slot by simply running faster
than anyone ranked below him. Ken Fowler of Baltimore ran three
5Ks under 16:30, with the fastest being a 16:08 at the Hadassah
Race for Research 5K, where he finished second overall. He also
had a top ten finish at the St. Agnes Labor Day 5K, and was
twelfth behind Chattin in 16:15 at the Race for Recovery.
Ted Poulos, a mainstay in the rankings in this division,
captures the fifth slot for the summer. Poulos had five
qualifying times, including a fourth place finish at the
Annapolis Ten Miler in a time of 57:43. Poulos also finished in
the top five of every other race he ran, including second at the
Riley's Rumble Half Marathon, the Bastille Day Four Miler, and
the Larry Noel Greenbelt 15K.

Men 40 - 44
It was very difficult to choose a winner in this division, the
largest in the men's rankings this summer. Part of the problem
with selecting a winner in this group was that the top two
contenders did not run head to head. Dai Roberts of Virginia
Beach and Jim Hage of Lanham both had some incredible
performances this summer. In the end, we have awarded the top
spot to Roberts because he turned in a slightly faster best time
than Hage. And, Roberts accomplished this time at a large race;
the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. His time of 1:10:51 translates
to a 32:09 10K equivalent, and was good enough for 22nd place.
Hage, to his credit, ran well this summer also, with his fastest
race being a 15:38 at the Run for Recovery, and his most
significant being a top twenty finish at the Rockville Rotary
Twilight 8K in 25:44. Hage, however, must settle for second
place in this period.
Our third ranked runner this summer is Dave Berardi, who
finished behind Hage at both the Twilighter and the Run for
Recovery. At the Run for Recovery, he ran 15:52, good enough for
eighth place. At the Rockville race he ran 26:11, which earned
him a top 25 finish.
Once again the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K comes into play when
selecting our fourth ranked runner. Joe Abernethy was 31 seconds
behind Berardi, finishing in 26:42, a showing strong enough to
secure his place in the top five runners this summer. Abernethy
was also third at the Annapolis Ten Miler, running 56:50.
Finally, Columbia's Gerry Clapper collects the final spot in the
top five this summer. We have awarded him this place because he
was faster than anyone ranked lower. Clapper was fourth at the
St. Agnes Labor Day 5K, running in 15:23 and he was eleventh at
the Run for Recovery, behind Hage and Berardi.

Men 45 - 49
The top two contenders in this division, David Webster and Jim
Adams, did battle at the Annapolis 10 Miler in August, and the
results of that race mirror the final rankings. Webster crossed
the finish line in Annapolis in 1:00:33, good enough for a top
twenty finish. Flying in behind Webster was Adams, who crossed
the line at 1:01:43. Not surprisingly, however, this head-to-
head battle on a tough course did not represent either man's
flat out fastest time.
Webster had his fastest race at the Larry Noel Greenbelt 15K,
where he finished fifth in 55:10. He also had a top five finish
at the Riley's Rumble Half Marathon, another always hot and
hilly course. Adams also had some fast performances this summer,
with his fastest race being a 17:22 sixth place finish at the
Hadassah Race for Research.
Third and fourth place in this division was also determined
largely on the strength of head-to-head competition. Scott Eden
and Wilhelm Anderson squared off at the men's race of the
Annapolis Women's Distance Festival. Eden collected the third
place ranking by beating Anderson by 32 seconds, coming in to
the finish in 17:25. Eden also ran the Dog Days of Summer 8K in
29:32 and the Meadfest 5K in 17:33. Anderson, to his credit,
also had a strong showing at the Annapolis Ten Miler, coming in
a mere fourteen seconds behind Adams to finish in 30th place
overall.
The final berth among the top five men in this division belongs
to Bethesda's Paul Peterson, who earned his ranking by finishing
behind Webster at the Larry Noel Greenbelt 15K in 59:09.
Peterson was also over the line shortly after Webster at the
Riley's Rumble Half Marathon in 1:23:39.

Men 50 - 54
Rick Platt had a stellar performance at the Rock 'n' Roll Half
Marathon, finishing just outside the top 100 overall in an
impressive 1:24:39. This, in combination with his fastest effort
for the season, a 35:37 at the Urbanna 10K, was enough to earn
the top ranking for the division this summer.
Paul Ryan, who had three qualifying times, is a close second
this period. Ryan had several top twenty finishes, including a
thirteenth place overall 17:23 performance at the Kentlands 5K.
Ryan's fastest performance was a fourth place overall run at the
Mitzvah 5K, where he ran 16:03 for his fastest showing of the
season.
Third and fourth place in this division was decided at the
Twilight 8K, where age group competitors Timothy Morgan and Mick
Slonaker went head to head. Morgan crossed the line in 29:11,
and Slonaker came racing in behind him less than a minute later
in 30:05. As a result of this race, Morgan takes third place and
Slonaker settles for fourth.
Slonaker, however, secured his fourth place ranking at the
Annapolis 10 Miler, where he defeated perpetual foe David Lowe
of Chevy Chase, who is our fifth ranked runner this summer. Lowe
finished the Annapolis race in 1:05:06, more than a minute and a
half behind Slonaker. This, however, was Lowe's slowest
performance. His best race was an 18:28 at the Capital Crescent
5K.

Men's 55 - 59
It was a tough call to determine who should get the top slot in
the summer rankings in this division. Patrick Griffith of
Alexandria and Charlie Koester of Abingdon went head to head
once--and Koester came out on top. However, one race does not
make a season, and one of Koester's fastest performances of the
season trumped Griffith's slowest performance of the summer.
Griffith had four qualifying times faster than Koester's fastest
time, including a 1:03:04 at the WaWa Hartwood Ten Miler.
Griffith also had a total of nine qualifying times. As a result,
we have awarded Griffith the first place ranking, and Koester a
very close second. Koester's fastest race was an 18:14 at the
St. Agnes Labor Day 5K, where he ran 18:14. It was at the
Leesburg 10K where he ran 38:07 to beat Griffith by 45 seconds.
Third place this summer belongs to Ed Lecates of York, who earns
his spot with four strong, consistent times run during this
period. As a matter of fact, the only men posting any times
faster than Lecates are Koester and Griffith. Lecates's best
race was an 18:48 finish at the St. Agnes race. He was also on
hand at the Hadassah Race for Research, the Daily Bread Run, and
the Bel Air 5K.
Fairfax's Jim Noone had a splendid performance at the Leesburg
10K, running in behind Koester and Griffith in 40:46, good
enough to earn a spot among the top echelon in this group. Noone
also had a good race at the Kentlands 5K and the Twilight 8K,
where he finished in the top 25 overall in a time of 32:36.
The final berth among the top five men goes to John Haubert who
earned his slot with a combination of a strong run at the
Hartwood 10 Miler and the Leesburg 10K. At the Hartwood race, he
was behind Griffith, running 1:07:50. At the Leesburg 10K, he
ran 41:30, putting him less than a minute behind Noone.

Men's 60 - 64
Nineteen men earned rankings in the 60-64 division, and leading
the way was Columbia's John Elliott. Elliott was the only man in
this age division to run a 10K equivalent time under 40:00. He
accomplished this feat at the Meadfest 5K where he ran 19:06,
which converts to a 39:51 10K equivalent. Elliott's other
qualifying time was a very respectable 40:00 at the Leesburg
10K, where he finished 44th overall.
A runner from the southern half of our region, Norfolk's Mel
Williams, is easily our second place finisher this summer. He
had his best race when it counted--at the 10,000 plus runner
Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, where he finished inside the top
200 in a time of 1:29:27. Williams also was on hand for the
Norfolk Tides Joy Fund 5K and the Naval Station Open 8K.
Parkeville's John Pitarra was 1:01 behind Elliott at the
Meadfest 5K, and that performance, coupled with a division
victory at the Bel Air 5K, just over a minute ahead of seventh-
ranked Art Morey, was enough to secure his place as the third
ranked runner this time. Pitarra's fastest race, however, was a
19:43 at the Daily Bread Run 5K.
Arlington's Chan Robbins had two qualifying times this summer,
and made them fast enough to slide into the fourth slot in these
rankings. At the Bastille Day 4 Miler, Robbins beat out tough
age group competition from eleventh-ranked Steve Forman, and at
the Twilight 8K he finished in the top thirty overall, crossing
the line in 33:34.
Finally, Skip Mullaney and Cal Fowler did battle at the
Charlottesville Track Club Independence Day 5K, and the outcome
of that battle determined the final slot among the top five men
in the division. Mullaney made it across in the finish line in
20:25, and Fowler was fourteen seconds behind in 20:39. As a
result, Mullaney gets the nod for fifth place, and Fowler must
settle for sixth. If there was any doubt about these results,
Mullaney also picked Fowler off at the Chicken Run 5 Miler, this
time crossing the line in 34:46 to Fowler's 35:05.

Men 65 - 69
Once again, Baltimore's George Yannakakis comes out on top in
this division. He earns his slot by being on his game when it
counted, defeating Richard Williams at the Annapolis Ten Miler
by more than two minutes. Yannakakis crossed the line in
Annapolis in 1:15:53. Yannakakis's fastest race of the summer
was a 21:44 finish at the Bel Air 5K.
Williams, who had numerous strong runs this summer, is our
runner-up in the division. He finished behind Yannakakis in
Annapolis, covering the course in 1:18:10. He also beat out age
group competition from Don Singer in Annapolis. At the 2001
Mental Health 5K, where the course was slightly short, he bested
third-ranked Larry Dickerson by 22 seconds. Williams also had a
strong showing at the Twilight 8K, where he finished in 37:20,
just outside the top fifty overall.
Larry Dickerson, who was just behind Williams at the Mental
Health race, earns the third slot with a combination of that
performance and a 20:08 division win at the Bastille Day 4
Miler. Shortly after this, Dickerson aged up into the 70-74
division where he earned the top ranking.
Bill Spruill of Chesapeake raced with Chris Catoe at the YMCA
Independence Day 5K, and beat Catoe by nine seconds, enough to
vault him into the fourth place ranking. Virginia Beach's Chris
Catoe, despite being beaten by Spruill at the YMCA race, climbed
into the top five this summer, with a great performance at the
Naval Station Open 8K, where he ran 37:23. Catoe had several
other strong runs, including a 22:52 at the Norfolk Tides Joy
Fund 5K and a 1:47:01 finish at the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon.

Men 70 - 74
Only three men in the 70-74 division earned the required two
qualifying times to get a ranking this summer. Leading the pack
was Larry Dickerson of Burke, who recently aged up. Dickerson's
fastest performance was a 48:31 finish at the Leesburg 10K. He
was also on hand for the Annapolis Ten Miler where he traversed
the hilly course in 1:21:13.
Behind Dickerson is Rockville's Jack McMahon, who was the
group's most prolific runner, turning in five qualifying times.
Two of those times represented 10K equivalents under 50:00--a
23:31 showing at the Kentlands 5K and a 38:46 at the Twilight 8K.
Finally, George Waxter of Frederick earned three qualifying
times to earn a ranking this summer. Waxter's best race was a
24:29 at the St. John's 5K; however, he was also on hand at the
Kentlands 5K and the Leesburg 10K.

Men 75 & Over
John Cahill of Salt Lake City, UT, turned up in the DC metro
area twice this summer to run area races. The 77-year-old was
faster than any of the locals, and, as a result, we have awarded
him a number one ranking. Cahill turned in a 21:05 to score an
age group victory over Bill Osburn at the Mitzvah 5K for his
fastest race of the season. He also turned up at the Rock 'n'
Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, running across the line in
1:42:52.
Second place this ranking period belongs to Bethesda's Bill
Osburn, who was the fastest of the local runners. He and third-
ranked Walt Washburn went head to head twice this summer, and
Osburn came out on top both times. Osburn's fastest race was a
25:22 at the Mitzvah 5K; however, he also turned in a strong
performance at the Bastille Day 4 Miler where he finished more
than a minute ahead of Washburn in 35:09. Washburn, who must
settle for third, had his fastest race at the WaWa Hartwood 10
Miler, where he ran 1:32:30. Washburn had eight other qualifying
times, making him the most prolific runner in this group (a
member of the 50+ Club! Editor).
Fourth place in this group is Oxon Hill's Denzil Pritchard, who
had his best race at the men's race of the Annapolis Women's
Distance Festival, where he ran 30:21. Pritchard's other time
was a 54:23 at the Annapolis Striders Dog Days 8K. Finally,
rounding out the top five is Bethesda's Frank Pierce, who had
two qualifying times, including a 33:17 at the Capital Crescent
5K, and a 59:23 at the Hillandale 5 Miler.
