 In Spring, a Runner's Thoughts Turn to Racing A Record 697 Runners Earned Ranked Runner Status 2008 WRR Spring Runner Rankings By James Moreland July/August 2008 For the Washington Running Report
Run, Forest, Run!
Families are racing together more often. Friends train
together. Look at the names in the teen division and you will
recognize some regular Ranked Runner names from the age groups.
RRCA Maryland State Representative Phil Lang and his wife Vicki
have two daughters racing, Brittany (9) and Tiffany (13). Remus
Medley has two all stars, Brittany Rooks (14) and Del'Vaughn
Rooks (16). Stephen Chantry, Jr. (15) is making his dad proud.
Julie Gessler (14), Hannah Starnes (12), Corey Danoff (15), and
Gaylin Glueck (13) are just a few of the next generation.
Surely the new twins from Jim Hage and Susan (Maher) Hage will
soon be running down the competition. Running is still booming. The spring brought another record
with 135,000 times and more than 250 races in just over two
months. An astounding 3,600 of those were ranked times with
both open divisions combining for 131 runners qualifying (two
or more races). In all, 354 men and 343 women made the
rankings. Twenty-seven races had more than 1,000 runners and a
dozen more topped 500. For competition (i.e., most ranked times), Credit Union Cherry
Blossom led all races with 307 times. The next two ten milers
were Charlottesville (89) and the GW Parkway Classic (55). The
top 8K was clearly the St. Patrick's Day race with 112,
followed closely, in time as well, by the Shamrock 8K with 89.
Van Metre (38) and the surprising Germantown 5M (33) with 14%
ranked were next. The Shamrock (83) and National Half Marathon
(55) filled the streets. Their marathons were (42) and (28)
respectively. There were 152 5Ks alone, six with more than 1,000 finishers.
The new Kelly's Shamrock 5K was the second largest but with 60
ranked runners, took over as the most competitive 5K from last
spring's leader, the Scope It Out 5K. That race had 40 ranked
runners this period. The 10K was the dominator. By far the
largest race was the massive Ukrop's Monument Avenue with
24,000 finishers and 263 ranked times. DARCARS Pike's Peek was
next with 209 ranked times or more than seven times as many
ranked runners per finisher. Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn
an asterisk beside their name. Open runners get an asterisk
only for an overall win. The Speed Alone is the fastest
qualifying time run for each division. In red, it means the
division champion ran it. Now let's see who made the top.
