National Race to Stop the Silence: Stop Child Sexual Abuse 10K, 5K Fun Run/Walk & Kids Fun Run
The Inaugural Event
By Kathy Freedman April 17, 2004 Washington, DC For the Washington Running Report
A brand-new event hit the streets of Washington, DC today as
hundreds of runners, walkers, and kids took to the streets to
break the silence about child sexual abuse. The event featured
information about the cause conveyed in song and skits as well
as testimonials from child abuse survivors. The National Race to Stop the Silence: Stop Child Sexual Abuse
10K attracted a diverse group to its 10K race, 5K fun run/walk,
and kids fun run. Laurel Lan (photo left) of Columbia, MD was
the second woman in the 10K, finishing in 41:18, less than a
minute behind Milligan Grinstead of Alexandria (39:39:. In the men's race, Rich Robinson of Chester, MD ran with winner
Luis Gutierriez for the first two miles, passing mile one in
5:37 and two miles in 11:33. Gutierriez broke away in the third
mile on the outbound leg of L'Enfant Plaza and put more than a
minute between him and the competition, finishing in 35:36.
Washington, DC's Keith Muller was second in 36:41, and Robinson,
third in 37:00, was the first masters division finisher. Gutierriez posted splits of 17:18 for 3 miles, 17:50 for 5K,
22:58 for 4 miles, 28:42 for 5 miles. Win Persina of Washington, DC was the first masters division
finisher for women (41:36), and was also third overall for women. In the non-competitive but timed 5K fun run/walk, Arlington's
John Bauer finished first in 19:27, with Bismark Agdemble of
Richmond, VA posting a close 19:31. Trond Wuellner of Washington
was third in 20:59. Jon Palks (54) of Bowie, MD was the first
masters divison finisher, 4th overall, in 21:55. In the women's race, another Arlington resident, Sushila Nanda,
outran her competition to finish first in 21:16. She ran a 6:52
pace. Kensington's Jennifer Heaton was next with her 23:56 and
Jayme Ames of Lorton finished third (25:01). Roberta Chorbaji of
Arlington was the first masters division finisher, placing 17th
overall for women in 29:13.
After the 10K and 5K finishers were all in, the children lined
up
for their fun run. About 30 kids went flying down Pennsylvania
Avenue in a cute imitation of their parents and older siblings
who had just run the 10K or 5K. All the kids earned medals for
their runs. The awards ceremony on Freedom Plaza concluded with a
performance by an a capella group from American University. The event enjoyed bright sunshine and the first truly warm day
of spring, giving participants a beautiful day in our nation's
capital.
