Autumnal Weather Brings Record Times for Happy Runners
By James Moreland August 13, 2006 Leesburg, VA For the Washington Running Report
Cool Weather Gets the Runners Started
Car 54 where are you? Last year's searing heat, which
frightened away runners, made runners skeptical. Rains earlier
in the week and prayers answered brought cool, dry weather for
the first time in recent history. With a morning low of fifty-
four degrees and humidity even lower, many were even a little
chilled before the new early 7:30 AM start, designed to avoid
the heat. Indeed, the day's high temperature of 81 was lower
than last year's starting temperature.Smacking the thermometer in disbelief did little to change the
crazy 54 degrees. Speaking of that, regular participant Chuck
Moeser, 54 until September, decided to watch us run today. He
says that all the 55-59 runners can relax because he is having
lots of fun without doing a lot of racing. Still, he noted with
a sly smile that though Patrick Griffith had his fourth course
record--38:52 for the 10K men 60-64 today, to go with his 20K
records for 55-59 (1:19:12) and 60-64 (1:23:29)--his 37:59
record for 55-59 men would have little chance in surviving
Chuck's next Leesburg 10K. Mick Slonaker (56) held off a
tenacious effort that began right from the word "Go" by Richard
Adams (55). Slonaker's hard-pressed victory in 38:02 nearly
erased Griffith's record this year.
In all there were fifteen records set or tied, three in the race
with seniority, the 10K. The 20K is only in its third year and
remembering the scorching heat from last year, it is no surprise
that the 20K had twelve new records. To set the stage, runners dash down a fairly steep hill to gain
some momentum at the mutual 10K/20K start. After winding through
town for about a mile, the runners hit the W & OD Trail. In
years past, the 10K went rolling through the countryside for
half the race. Now after one mile, runners charge up a gradual
hill to the turn around. For the 10Kers, it is all uphill to the
halfway point. That makes it a helpful downhill charge until the
final title maker 250-meter hill on Harrison Street. For the
20Kers, the hill gradually mounts through mile 5.5. Then they
are treated to about 1.5 miles of pretty serious downhill.
Mentally, once you have re-climbed that hill to mile eight, you
have four miles of straight road going downhill. Robyn Humphrey (42) of Ellicott City, MD may be a little miffed
at my little fib, "the worst hill is the last one at Harrison
Street." She was ninth overall in the 20K with 1:25:08. (In
photo left Nicola Elliott [in blue] makes her move at the bottom
of the
hill). The masters competition was very stiff with six of
the
top eleven women being masters. In fact, after Mary Kate
Bailey's (31) torching of Samia Akbar's 1:17:32 record last
year, the next ten women were all 35 and over. Bailey ran
1:13:49, which is about a minute for each ten degrees it was
cooler from last year.
10K Men
The course, nearly all on the trail, was shaded the whole way.
When the first runner in the 10K came back down the hill, he
had a police motorcycle following him. Eric Lavigne of
Leesburg, VA [Photo left] was blazing a sub-5:00 pace
back down the hill. Phlilph Lagat of Kenya was gamely trying to
stay with him. Lagat had run hard the day before as well. He
pushed Lavigne to tie the course record of 31:23, set by Peter
Sherry in 2000. We were in startled awe as they hurtled by with
the police lights chasing behind them. In third place, Ray
Pugsley of Potomac River Running tore down Brian Daugherty's
submasters record of 33:04 set in 1999 with a whale of a time,
32:10.After that, the youth movement charged home with only masters
champion Howard Nippert of Fork Union, VA (34:18) older than 23
years in the next thirteen finishers. Leesburg's Adam Crawford
(18) took a run at the 19 & under record of 33:20, finishing in
33:50. The 45-49 division had an out-of-town winner, Paul
Dominiy of East Haddam, CT in 40:01. Steve Giorgis (51) of
Herndon, VA is making a comeback, winning in 39:38 just ahead
of Kenyon Erickson (52) of Vienna, VA in 40:38. Erickson had
won the inaugural 20K back in 2004. Chan Robbins has not been
on the roads lately but he got to keep his 45:00 10K record
from 2002. Lloyd Blackwell (66) of Warrenton with 46:38 was the
leader of the spirited effort to rewrite the history books.
Omnipresent Robert Gurtler (71) of The Plains, VA was the only
male over 70. He was one of three age group winners who chose
to race again later today.
10K Women
For the women, we have not seen a lot of Susannah Kvasnicka of
Great Falls, VA [Photo left] lately. Would she be rusty?
At four mile, she was motoring along, oblivious to the fact
that Meghan Ridgley of Reston, VA (and Potomac River Running
stores) was about 100 yards back. Ridgley, feeling the pressure
from Margie Shapiro of Annandale, VA (also from Potomac River
Running), stoked her engines and pressed hard. Kvasnicka's lead
held and she crossed the line in 35:53 just four seconds off
the course record set by Kelly Cordell in 1998. Kvasnicka won
in 2004 and finished in the top three twice more.Moving up the divisions, Stephanie Hammond (38) of Springfield,
VA was eighth overall. Theresa Kolish of Alexandria, VA took
the 45-49, tenth place overall, quickly followed by the teen
winner, Diana Budreika of Haymarket, VA. Leesburg's Ann
MacCormac was the 40-44 champ. Alice Franks (58) of Rockville,
MD won her division for the fourth straight year. Her time of
46:05 was not far off her course record of 45:26. Pat Welch of Vienna, VA led the 60-64 women in 53:47, not all
that far off of Charlotte Edwards's 1997 record in 52:11. Tami
Graf turned 70 and obliterated the old record by more than
two minutes a mile in a fabulous 59:11.
Philiph Lagat (28) is second in the 10K with 31:30.

20K Men
The Kenyans took a shot at the 20K too. Early on, Aaron Church
of Fairfax, VA [Photo left] proved that a cool day
provides a hot time. He hosed his course record 1:06:21 from
last year, replacing it with an incredible 1:04:29. That would
have put him right on the heels of the third place finisher in
the 10K with 10K more to go again. Kenyan Raphael Boit was
motoring but he looked out of his element and certainly no
threat to Church.Long distance warrior Michael Wardian of Arlington, VA was
uncharacteristically sluggish. His footfalls were stomps and it
looked like he might fade. He was running on empty after only
two hours of sleep, compliments of his new son. After a
pick-me-up at an aid station, he settled in and drove past Boit
for second place in 1:07:08. Ben Koch of Damascus was close in
1:08:34. Max Lockwood of Washington, DC loves to race. He did win his
age group and break John Piggott's submaster record of 1:09:51,
racing 1:09:11, thanks in part to Frank Sprtel of Silver
Spring, MD who was on his heels in 1:09:25. At 34, he is also
right on his heels for the submasters accolades. Note that the
submasters record goes to Boit who was third overall.
Christopher Hamley (41) of Damascus, MD knocked two minutes off
the 40-44 record in 1:12:49 and posted the masters record by
ten seconds over Paul Okerberg (45) set in 2004. Former 40-44
record holder Jean-Christophe Arcaz of Rockville, MD slowed
only a little to win the 45-49 division 1:15:54. He was just
behind Carl Clark (42) of New Market, MD. Clark enjoyed a
downhill finish. He won the Westminster Main Street Mile
outright in 4:13. Norton Compton won the 2004 10K race in 36:55 at age 49. Two
years later, he dashed home and won the 50-54 age group in
1:17:22, knocking almost two minutes off Patrick Griffith's
grandmasters (50-59) record (1:19:10). Gary Grimsley of
Springfield, VA was more than two minutes behind his cousin
(Compton) but well under the previous record. His 1:19:58 was
good for second place. Jay Wind of Arlington, VA had won the
55-59 division last year in 1:26:41. Oddly enough, he was one
of the few runners to run slower in the much cooler weather. He
settled for second in 1:28:35 in a close battle with division
winner Allen Vaughan of Stafford, VA (1:28:14). Bill Joyce (62) of Herndon, VA beat both of them, winning his
division in 1:28:05. Steve Forman (66) of McLean, VA boosted
more than a minute off the record, winning in 1:37:13. Jerry
Lewis (72) of Reston, VA crushed the record of a very solid
runner, Milton Taylor. His 1:41:32 knocked an impressive 21
minutes off the old record.
20K Women
Mary Kate Bailey (31) of Arlington, VA [Photo left] ran
alone. As she fired down the last few miles you could see that
she is driven. After running the Rock 'n' Roll HM last Labor
Day in 1:17:25, she moved up to 1:15:24 at the Shamrock HM this
March. Could this race be a tune-up for another run at the
Labor Day race? Cathy Pugsley of Sterling, VA (Potomac River
Running) knocked a solid four minutes off last year's sixth
place finish. Her 1:20:10 was a solid second place and easily
broke the previous record. Amy Pyles (39) of Hummelstown, PA
was next in a flashy 1:21:10, making her the favorite for the
masters record next year. In 2005, Monica Grillo faded to
second in the heat. This year she broke her own masters record
with a swift 1:22:35. Unfortunately for her, Laura Nelson (40)
of Woodstock, VA also broke the record and did it a dozen
seconds faster in 1:22:23.Cecilia Lutz (46) of Herndon, VA aged up and massacred Liza
Recto's 45-49 record by 12 minutes in 1:25:39. No matter,
Recto won herself a cowbell in her new grandmasters division.
Sandra Adams (56) is the only threat to Alice Franks's 10K
record, but she keeps on setting the 20K records. She ran
1:33:06, looking extra sleek this year. Helene Price (61) of
Williamsburg, VA ran 1:46:03 as the only woman over sixty.
Still, her time would have placed her second in the next two
younger divisions. There were plenty of cool refreshments for the slightly larger
crowd than last year--591 in the 20K and 615 in the 10K. Last
year's 20K race was the eighth largest in the country. The
band, Night Music, was well received. Even though the closest
parking lot was closed for repairs, there was plenty of easy,
free parking for all.
Michael Wardian (32) is second in the 20K with 1:07:08.
