Salomon Challenges Runners to Create the Ultimate Trail Run and Share It with the World
By Kirsten McEwen August 20, 2008 Ogden, UT For the Washington Running Report
Salomon took trail running to a new level of performance this
year with the introduction of its breakthrough shoe, the
Salomon XT Wings. Now Salomon is teaming up with Nokia to
provide runners with a new high-tech way to track their
adventures and share them with the world. The Salomon XT
Challenge awards a pair of Salomon XT Wings and a Nokia N
series Smartphone to runners who dream up the most imaginative
and challenging running routes. Then, the winners hit the trail
in their XT Wings and share their adventure online, with maps,
photos and detailed statistics from their run, uploaded via
Nokia Sports Tracker technology. Here is how it works: runners from all over the world come up
with an inspired personal challenge, and submit their plans
online at www.salomonrunning.com. Each month, Salomon will
select the most creative challenge. That lucky runner gets a
pair of Salomon XT Wings to wear for their challenge and a
Nokia Smartphone equipped with the new Sports Tracker software
to document it. When they complete their challenge, they upload
photos and data to the Salomon Running Web site, where other
runners can check out dynamic maps of their route, complete
with pictures that synch up to points on the map, plus every
statistic from the run, including altitude, pace, speed, and
duration. Some of the challenges so far have included an English runner
who is recreating the Central London Tube map on her Sports
Tracker map by running all 11 routes above ground and an
American runner who is working on her first 50 mile ultra-
marathon on the beautiful and challenging Lake Tahoe course. A
French runner challenged himself to run up the Eiffel Tower in
less than 20 minutes, while a runner from New Zealand charted a
difficult course across a "bridge to nowhere," filled with
stunning and rugged terrain. Even if they do not win the challenge, runners can still share
their adventure on the Salomon Running Web site with Sports
Tracker software. Nokia Sports Tracker is a GPS-based activity
tracker that runs on Nokia Smartphones. It automatically stores
information about workouts and routes into the users' online
training diary and is free to download. For more details on
Sports Tracker, visit maps.salomonrunning.com .
Salomon's top athletes are also using Nokia Smartphones to
share their adventures online. Be sure to check out their
mobile blogs at www.salomonathleteblogs.com.
