Germantown 5-Miler, 5K, and 1K Kids Run
By Danny Talmage February 17, 2009 Germantown, MD For theWashington Running Report
Matthew Kim sets the 14 and younger record in 2008 with 29:31.
The Germantown 5-Miler returns to upper Montgomery County! This
family-friendly event presented by Seneca Creek Community
Church and benefiting the Germantown Boys and Girls Club and
Girls on the Run of Montgomery County will take place on
Saturday, May 16th at the Seneca Meadows Corporate Center in
Germantown, MD. But be forewarned--this is not just your average
5 mile race! A 1K kids run will kick off the event at 8:10 a.m.
followed by the 5 mile ChronoTrack timed race at 8:30 am. Last but
not least, we are happy to announce that we will be hosting the
Girls on the Run of Montgomery County 5K that will start at
8:50. This untimed event will be open to all runners with these
outstanding girls starting up front. This year the race proceeds will go to support two well-
deserving local charities, namely the Germantown Boys & Girls
Club and Girls on the Run of Montgomery County. The mission of the Germantown Boys & Girls Club is to help boys
and girls of all backgrounds, with an emphasis on at-risk
youth, to build confidence, develop character and acquire the
skills needed to become productive, civic-minded, responsible
adults. Today children come from families in which both parents
work. In fact, this situation seems to define the 'traditional'
family these days. Elementary students today lack the community
support required to deal with academics, extracurricular
activities and social challenges. The Germantown Boys & Girls
Club seeks to provide youth with a positive and safe place in
which their development is sought. Girls on the Run of Montgomery County is a unique, life-
changing, after school program for 3rd through 8th grade girls
designed to promote healthy habits and an active lifestyle. The
dynamic 9-10 week program combines training for a 5K running
race with education and interactive discussions about critical
issues that will affect pre-teen girls as they reach
adolescence. Trained coaches teach "life's lessons" to girls
through fun and clever running games and workouts. Their goal
is that girls completing the program are physically, mentally,
and emotionally stronger and better prepared to overcome the
challenges and pressures of adolescence and beyond. Participants in the race will have access to the festive post
race area, which will include a moon bounce for children and
baked goods, bagels and more, to be enjoyed by all
participants. There will be corporate/friends and running club
teams competing in the 5-Miler.
