(center in photo, he is a Braddock Lake H.S. graduate)
has been one of the world's best 110m hurdlers since 1995. The
four-time world champion and 1996 Olympic gold medalist won the
2005 110 m hurdle national championship with a fast 12.99
performance.
Some Fine Performances in the Distance Events
First photo: Treniere Clement breaks through to win her first
USA National 1500 meters race in 4:06.73.
USATF athlete quote: I have been working on my finish all
year. My speed is strong. I knew that would pull me through.
(Clement does not have an A standard [to qualify for the
World
Championships in August] in the 1500) I'm going to sit with
my
coach and figure out what to do. My time today is a personal
record.
Second photo: Two-time Olympian Jennifer Rhines finished in the
top three of the Women's 10,000m with her 31:37.20 and
qualified for the Worlds in Helsinki. (Rhines holds the women's
course record in the Pikes' Peek 10K road race in Rockville.)
First photo: Tim Broe defended his title in the 5000 meters
with a quick 13:12.76.
USATF Athlete quote: I just tried to make it an honest
effort from the get-go. It is the first time since 2001 that I
have been 100% prepared, and it takes a lot of strength to not
worry about the past.
Second photo: Shalane Flanagan right took control of the
women's 5000m and won in 15:10.96. Carrie Tollefson
left, who spoke at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 2004,
finished fifth in 15:24.13. Tollefson also competed in the
1500m qualifying round.
USATF Athlete quote from the winner: My style is to go out
and run fast. I love to run fast. You come to a championship
meet, and you know you have to run well. I wanted to make the
team very badly. I knew I just needed to attack it.
Twice a 1500m National Champion
USATF athlete quote from Alan Webb, winner in 3:41.97: I'm
happy. It was rough at the beginning but I just wanted to stay
focused and not panic. My composure was pretty good and I was
ready for the move during the last 300/400 meters to go. . . I
trained with Chris Lukezic left . . . Today was a great
day for northern Virginia, the two of us trained last year with
[women's 1500m champion] Treniere Clement.
