A Day at the Races Cross Country 5K
Presented by the Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation
By James Moreland June 7, 2008 Leesburg, VA For the Washington Running Report
Karl Lang (22) of Oak Hill, VA breaks the tape in a swift
17:26.
Already in the second year, this cult race has a new course. In
fact, Race Director Marianne Jones has already promised that
there will be a new course again next year. "We have plenty of
trails to make different courses." This year started off the
morning with dense fog but by starting time 8:30 a.m. the
record heat wave had already scorched it all away. Still, more
than 150 runners took the opportunity to follow the one
horsepower, hay guzzling lead "vehicle" through the winding
trails of Morven Park. As the race started, 50-54 winner Myron
Kremer exhorted the young studs to catch that leader. "Come on;
let's see you catch that horse." Then under his breath he
muttered, "Nobody's going to catch that horse." Just like Big
Brown toying with the field and aiming for the Triple Crown,
that horse easily headed the field. Before the race started, runners with spikes were warned
to "Step around the ChampionChip Mats." "Just swing your chip
foot over the mats" before charging up the lead hill. One
runner asked plaintively, "Is this the only hill?" Most of the
others just laughed. After cross country is an experience,
racing over hill and dale. Surprisingly, this year's course,
which did include brief parts of last year's course, was more
hilly-friendly. Last year's course was probably a little
short. This year was closer to a real 5K. The times were slower
as the temperature was about 90 degrees at the start. There
were even mile markers but cross country is more about place
and all about fun.
Early on the younger runners dashed up the opening hill and it
was soon clear that course markings would be important. They
were excellent. Runners were told to keep the orange flags to
their left until they began the return trip. After that the red
flags on their left would guide them home. Through most of the
race the snake-like turns gave runners a chance to see those
far ahead and behind them. In the last mile, they met up with
the mile fun runners frolicking in the wounds. Though the
course did cross a couple tiny streams and had some
equestrian "jumps" to traverse, there was always plenty of room
to maneuver. Circling around did make it somewhat hard to tell
which directions we were racing but the course, even with tall
grass in some spots, was pretty fast for cross country. Gratefully, the last quarter mile returned runners downhill and
a gravel road to the final mowed path and the ChampionChip
mats. There were many young ones in the fun run as well. The
trend has become to bring your children to the races, plenty of
fun, camaraderie, with some but not too much competition.
Though cross country is a young runner's sport. Do not try to
tell that to Pat Welch (63) of Vienna, VA (in photo) or Robert
Gurtler (73) of the Plains, VA. They proudly took home some
hardware. Gurtler has already run 44 races so far this year.
Last year's winner Leslie Lyford of Leesburg, VA is just
fourteen. This year she finished third in 25:03. Last year
Mary Kirk Cunningham of Leesburg, VA finished in seventh by a
second. This year she roared by runner-up Tina Genay (in photo)
in the last hundred meters to triumph in 24:37. For the men,
Karl Lang (22) of Oak Hill, VA had an excellent ride, winning
handily in 17:26. Runner-up Dustin Whitlow (22) of Ashburn, VA
held off Justin Fritzius (23) of Purcellville, VA 17:38 to
17:43. Fritzius had won Leesburg's other cross-country race,
the Freeze Your Gizzard Cross Country 5K, last November. After the race there was water for the heated up runners and
bananas. Using the best technology Capital Running Company had
already posted the full results on the web site barely an hour
after the race had started. The awards, 2 deep in 5-year age
groups, were nicely engraved medallions. The ceremony started
promptly an hour after the start of the race. Parking for the
race, which benefits the Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation
was plentiful in the large open field. The race could easily
mange twice as many finishers. Plan to be there for their third
year and another brand new course!
Below the fun race gets underway.
