11th Annual LAWS Run for Shelter Half Marathon & 5K

Loudon Abused Women's Shelter
By James Moreland
March 19, 2006
Purcellville, VA
For the Washington Running Report

All new course records! The 11th running of the Run for the Shelter race moved to spacious Franklin Park in Purcellville, VA The wide vistas of open fields sheltered by rolling hills provided a cross-country start for the half marathon. The entire 5K lassoed the park with some daunting hills the ringed the open fields. That was fine because weather du jour in March is windy with a hint of cold and windy.

Runners gathered under the shelter in hopes of dodging the wind, though in the sun the temperature was not too cold for running. As the racers were herded up the hill to the start, one volunteer promised there would be plenty of food at the finish for all the runners. The 5K runners started ten minutes after the half marathoners but would clearly get back in time for a first shot at the food. Not to worry, 2:15 after the start of the race twenty more hot pizzas arrived to augment the scores of bananas and huge, delicious muffins. Gatorade and bottled water quenched thirst.

The course was very well marked with accurate thirteen yellow mile signs. There were cones and signs and cheerful course marshals at nearly every possible spot with an excellent volunteer-to-runner ratio. Indeed, many neighbors came out on the lawn to urge the runners on and not just the canine ones.

The half marathon skirted round the park for two miles and then headed out on to the road. There were no killer hills on the course but no flat spots either. Mile three charged downhill on a dirt road, crossing a creek at the mile marker. Two more miles of pastoral scenery and then it was "hit the highway." Runners were treated to about a mile of roller coaster blacktop before turning onto the dirt roads leading to the turnaround just past mile seven.

Larry Bullock (28) of Woodstock, VA (Photo above) had pulled away early from the field and by mile eight had a three-minute lead, which he expanded to more than seven minutes, winning in 1:21:17. Masters winner Bruce Halpin (49) of Ashburn, VA just missed the top three by six seconds. 30-34 winner Karsten Brown of Front Royal, VA tired from the sixth spot and settled for ninth in 1:36:15. This racing fool had raced the Chambersburg HM the day before and, still a young pup, wanted to drive to Columbia, MD for their 15K at 2:00 PM.

Closing fast on Brown was a real race. The top three women were in constant sight of each other. Meredith Warren (25) of Harrisonburg, VA won in 1:36:34 with Tiffany Hevner (25) of Columbia, MD right there in 1:36:41. Sub master Jeanette Dumbrell of Baileys Crossroads, VA was fifty meters back, earning one of the only two Washington Running Report Ranked Runner qualifying times doled out by this tough course. Masters best Margaret Bishop of Middleburg, VA raced home in 1:40:11 for the other spot.

206 runners finished the half marathon. 101 runners led by Jon Laude (Photo left) in 19:06 ran in the 5K.

As with the out-and-back style race favored by most runners, racers were treated to a constant stream of faces from mile five through nine. Nobody looked real happy at the prospect of the mile long hill at 12 miles into the course. Still, we were briefly relieved by an over exuberant marshal who promised us no more hills as we crested that one. The penalty for yelling, "You're almost done!" should be that person must come out and run the entire course. That last mile followed the race theme of no flat-all hill with the added adventure of trying to move up a place or two on weary legs. The twisting finish gave runners a preview of the finish and announcer Judy's booming voice; only to need to run past, circle around, up and down, for another 2/3 mile.

In a nutshell, the course was well marked and marshaled. Though it was a daunting challenge, the scenery was great. The food was plentiful. The awards went a generous three deep in five-year age groups with the top three winners getting merchandise as well. The race is definitely a keeper. Put it on your calendar for next year.
