St. Patrick's Day 8K

Nearly 6,000 runners signed up for the largest St. Patrick's Day
race ever.
Another racing season in Washington is off and running
Gurmessa Kumssa raced down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the
finish line without any competition, waving and blowing kisses
to the crowd, looking for all the world as if he were breezing
down America's main street after a second inauguration as
president--without the entourage, of course. In fact, the 27-year-old Ethiopian runner had left his home in
Addis Ababa only a week earlier and was completing his first
race in the United States, which turned out to be a big win at
the 18th St. Patrick's Day race--for the first time this year
an 8K--in 23 minutes 36 seconds. "It was very, very simple," he said of his victory through an
interpreter. "I need to compete to achieve a higher standard." Patrick MacAdie (22), from Washington, DC finished second but
nearly a minute behind Kumsaa in 24:32. "He was rolling," said
MacAdie, who graduated from American University last
spring. "Once he broke away, I was kind of in no-man's land and
I was just hanging on for second."
In the women's race, Mary Kate Bailey (31, photo left), from
Arlington, VA passed Christina Wells with less than half a mile
to go to win her first St. Patrick's Day race in Washington.
Wells (30), from Woodbridge, VA, finished a close second."I've been working and getting ready since January," Bailey
said, "but this was my first race. I'm not yet 100 percent but
I'm feeling pretty good." It was good enough for an 8K personal best of 27:50 and some
compensation for finishing as the runner-up to Susannah
Kvasnicka at the same race in 2005. Bailey said she planned to
run the Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach on March 19. Vanessa Hunter (30), from Arlington, and Casey Smith (26), from
Arlington, took third and fourth, respectively. The top four
women finished within 13 seconds of each other. Alisa Harvey
(40) took fifth in 29:11 and won the masters division. Mark
Malander (48) was the top male master in 27:12. While the top few runners hurried through the course, the rest
of the record field of 5,948 registrants enjoyed a more
leisurely pace, the better to take in the relatively warm
temperature and the joy of starting up the spring racing
season. Although a few gripes were heard about the city's last-minute
insistence that the course be trimmed from its usual distance,
most runners took the change in stride. And it being a St. Patrick's Day event, that means the full
panoply of green outfits, shamrocks, hats, and other garb
common to the leprechaun. So they say. One such trio presented
a frightful spectacle as they crossed the finish line together.
They claimed to have met on the course, although it may have
been that others simply kept their distance. "It's my first time in Washington," said Ginger Greg (42),
wearing an orange wig and face-paint, who was headed to
Caracas, Venezuela, in two months after completing her Foreign
Service training at the State Department. Running partner
Oliver Reed (28), also new to Washington, competed in green
hair and a fake beard, and their third, Brandon Racer (32),
sported a sprawling green wig. "I'm part Jewish, but my mother was a leprechaun," said Racer,
almost convincingly.
