Westminster Road Runner Leader Dave Herlocker Passes Away
By James Moreland March 21, 2008 Westminster, MD For the Washington Running Report
Dave Herlocker (left) sits with Dave Cooley at the RRCA
President's Meeting this February.
We are crushed to learn the sad news that WRRC's legendary Dave
Herlocker has passed away. He epitomized what racing and
running and the volunteers that make it all happen are all
about. I have been running scores of races with the Westminster
Road Runners for more than a dozen years and I have never yet
been to a race where Dave was not omnipresent. It will
certainly be a momentous challenge to find a dozen other
helpful, cheerful club members to replace even a small piece of
what Dave meant to the club and the running community. This all
makes us so much more aware that "each day is a gift." Dave was
still a vital, healthy man. We have not learned the cause of
his demise yet but were told that he "was passed peacefully in
his home" last night.Dave was severely injured many years ago by a car accident. He
never stopped being a part of running and racing. He not only
volunteered at every race but he found time to race in them,
after and sometimes before, the other racers (often with his
canine companion Badie). Dave represented
the Westminster Road Runners Club at all the official
functions. At the President's Meeting, after the RRCA Challenge
10 Mile this year, Dave was there. Last Sunday at the
Prediction 4 Mile, Dave was there. Dave was 67 years old. He
will be greatly missed.
Fletcher Funeral Home in Westminster will be taking care of
Dave's services.
