For the Washington Running Report

The Cascades Community Association and Sterling Volunteer Fire Department presented a comeback event on Saturday, May 24 in Sterling, Virginia.

Patriot Games
Alisa Harvey, assistant coach at George Mason University since this January, ran her first 10K this year and won the women's division in 37:45.

Tough as Granite
The Moeser family moved south from New Hampshire in 1991 and father Chuck, now age 51, has been shredding the pavement at local road races frequently. In the Cascades Fire Chase 10K, Moeser placed third overall with a time of 34:04.

Women Learn to Climb the Hills
6th place woman Mary Klaff, 37, almost caught road veteran Steve Forman, 62, with her finishing time of 44:07. They both ran well and survived the rolling hills. "A tough course with a long hill," remarked Forman afterwords.

Eagle Eyes
Patrick Griffith, 58, recounted Alisa Harvey's smart racing strategy. Griffith ran briefly with Harvey on a downhill portion of the course; Harvey(37:45) then passed Griffith(38:37), Richard Adams(38:26), 52, and Tom Cook (38:16), 44. 17th place male Douglas Landau (40:04) bubbled agreeably that it was Harvey who ran the smartest race. No matter where he finishes, Patrick Griffith has a law officer's ability to give the straight facts.

Well-Prepared to Run, Happy to Finish
Laurie Bickart, 33, finished 7th in 44:26. There were many mothers among the female finishers, such as Louise Hancock, 30, and Karen Costa, 35. Hancock ran 48:45 and Costa ran 58:06 on the challenging 10K course; both are mothers to three children and credit running with allowing them to keep their sanity. Melissa,39, and Douglas Landau are the parents of four children - she is a former aerobics teacher and explains that mom has time to run because it is her first priority.

A Decent Turnout with 406 Finishers in the 10K Run
Alexander Lamme's strong legs propelled the 28-year-old to a 6th place men's finish in 37:30. Like a majority of participants, Lamme lives nearby; many finishers claimed to be very familar with the rolling terrain on the course from regular training on this type of scenery.
There were other athletes, like 44-year-old Leesburg resident Larry Hinkin sporting a Kansas State University shirt, who found the hill on the course to be a "nasty surprise." Hinkin handled it well by completing the course in 46:34.

A Fun Start to Memorial Day Weekend
Amy Feuerbach, 25, finished tenth among women with a time of 45:26.
A quiet, smiling Anthony Del Moral, 23 (47:43) and his father Tony, 61 (59:41), prepared for next week's Rock'n'Roll Marathon in San Diego with a 10K jaunt through the neighborhood. Tony Del Moral says he will achieve his 100th marathon next weekend!

The Under-30 Group Was Well-Represented
20-year-old Charles Bowles enthusiastically ran strides before the start of the run. The Boyce, VA resident finished in 11th place with his 38:52.
Teha Kennard, 25 (42:24), placed as third woman and Jessica Goveia, 26 (42:29), placed fourth while Jason Weber, 26 (34:56), placed as 4th man.
