General Information
On Sunday, May 11 at 8 a.m., thousands of runners and walkers will unite to help make college a reality for many D.C. public high school students. Sponsored by The Sallie Mae Fund, The Sallie Mae 10K, one of the region's most popular road races, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and will again benefit programs that help increase access for students seeking post-secondary education. Former Washington Redskin and Founder of the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation, Darrell Green, and Washington D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams will kick off the 2003 race. The 10K will take place at West Potomac Park on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

The Sallie Mae 10K benefits the DC College Access Program (DC-CAP), which enables Washington, D.C. metropolitan-area high school students to gain access to higher education through assistance in planning and preparing for college, and providing "last dollar" scholarships to eligible students to help close the financial need gap.

When DC-CAP began operations in 1999, less than fifty-five percent of the District of Columbia public high school freshmen were earning a high school diploma and only one-third were pursuing any type of post-secondary education. Today, sixty-four percent of D.C. public high school students are enrolling in college. By providing counseling and financial aid assistance for the thousands of District students who might otherwise never have the chance to attend college, DC-CAP gives them a realistic opportunity. "A college education is one of the best investments anyone can ever make," said Susan Porter, Chairman of the Board, The Sallie Mae Fund. "This race, by benefiting DC-CAP, makes the dream of going to college a reality for many District students."

This year's 10K also features a 2K fun run and a post-race breakfast. To register or volunteer for the 2003 Sallie Mae 10K, please visit the race Web site or call the race hotline at (202) 969-2979. Due to U.S. Park Service regulations, there will be no runner registration on race day.

There will be two opportunities for on-site registration and packet pick up:

Intercollegiate Teams - Alumni and Students Helping Students
The Sallie Mae Fund Intercollegiate Team Challenge brings college and university teams (including alumni) together in West Potomac Park to settle, "who has the fastest feet on the street". The Sallie Mae Fund will make a $1,000 donation to the winning school's general scholarship fund. Total team times will be calculated by combining the top two (2) male and female times.

Since its' inception five years ago, John Hopkins University SAIS has collected $5,000 and has dominated the Team Challenge. Once they register, the other teams discuss who will take second place.

In 1998 the average time was 40:52, the members: Ian Clements- 35:24, Clayton Rogers -37:36, Anna Reptis - 44:37 and Suzanne Jessup - 45:51.

In 1999 the average time was 41:58, the members: Russell Crandall - 32:15, Ian Clements - 35:11, Suzanne Jessup - 47:31, Michelle Billig - 52:55.

In 2000 the average time was 42:20, the members: Merek Filicko - 39:33, Patrick Stephenson - 40:44, Anna Reptis - 45:57, Suzanne Jessup - 48:22

In 2001 the average time was 41:36, the members: Ian Clements - 37:09, Nils Junge - 37:22, Rosalie Parker - 40:12, Kirsten Anderson - 51:44).

In 2002 the average time was 49:37, the members: Clayton Rogers - 35:30, Martin Mayerchak - 42:20, Yolanda Perez - 56:50, and Sarah Quinlan - 1:03:48.

Get excited! Contact your school's alumni office to get the word out and locate those runners. You might be able to be pull together a winning team, but it will not be easy as Team John Hopkins will not go down without a fight.

In addition, there will be awards for the top All-Men, All Women and Mixed teams. Each team must consist of a minimum of four members. Mixed teams score two men and two women.

Team Marines from Quantico defended their 2001 title and placed first in the All-Men and lowered the average time from 34:02 to 33:19. The team: Rob Adam - 32:21, Francis Friedman - 33:36, Chad Walton - 33:37, and Ed Holloway - 33:42.

The All-Women team competition was won by the Marine Connection with an average time of 38:47. The members: Janice Riley- 38:31, Patti Stewart- Garbrecht - 38:47, Jennifer Uwins - 38:48 and Liz Boyer - 39:02.

The Mixed Team winner was the Colonial Road Runners defended their 2001 titled and lowered their average time to 36:53 from 37:24. The team: Michael Mann - 32:24, Alison Holinka - 36:13, Ryan Kent, age 16, 33:36, Lindsay Kent, age 11, 42:20).

The event will be using the ChampionChip for scoring provided by Capital Running Company. ALL prizes and awards will be based up "clock time" rather than "chip time." The official results will be posted at www.runwashington.com.

Registrations are being accepted on-line at http://www.active.com. The late registration fee is $25.00. The fee is $12 for those under the age of 18 and college students (copy of ID required). The Family Fun Run is $10.00.

The Competition
The Sallie Mae 10K has always been known for its competition.

In 1989 Greta Waitz of Norway set the women's record in 33:12. The following year, Rosalind Taylor of Hyattsville, Md., set a new record of 32:31. Jill Hunter of England in 1991 lowered the mark to 32:00 and it has not been broken. The closest time was 32:05 in 1993 by Gladys Ondeyo of Kenya.

There have been eight winning times under 33:00. Rosalind Taylor was the last American female winner. Elena Paramonova of Russia has won the event the last two year (33:48, 34:09). Tatiana Pozdnyakova of Russia set the master's record (33:47) in 1996.
