18th Lawyers Have Heart 10K

Stretching Your Experience
By George Banker
May 29, 2008
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

The inaugural running of the Lawyers Have Heart 10K was on Sunday, May 19, 1991 as two local runners did battle on the roads in West Potomac Park. In front were Darrell General of Mitcheleville, MD and Jim Hage of Lanham, MD. General was the victor with 30:45 to 30:58...and that was 18 years ago! The female winner was Linda Portazick of Arlington, VA with 36:47. The first two years the race was held in West Potomac Park before moving to Georgetown.

The only four-time winner is Philippe Rolly of Arlington: 1999 (32:22), 2000 (31:34), 2001 (30:49), and 2004 (31:23). Hage is the only male to hold titles in the open (1993-31:56, 1996- 32:06) and master (2002-32:56) division. That is the event masters record.

On Saturday, June 14, 2008, at 8:00 a.m., the 18th annual running of the Lawyers Have Heart 10K will be contested once again at the Washington Harbour in Georgetown. The Lawyers Have Heart 10K is a Washington tradition which has established itself as one of the top 10Ks in the area. Since 1991 in excess of 26,000 runners have finished the race.

Registration is available on-line. The registration fee is $30 through June 11, 2008.

During the last 17 years, Lawyers Have Heart has raised more than $4.3 million to benefit the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, whose mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, the number one and number three killers of Americans.

The court date has been set and the only "briefs" will be running shorts, the sitting "judge" will be the clock at the finish line, the guilt or innocence will be determined by the gun time for the overall winners and the chip time for the age groups. The sentence for all participants who are not properly trained will be "hard labor." Normally there will be heat and humidity that packs the "court route."

The following was reported in the July-August 1992 Washington Running Report, "Looking forward to next year's event, race co- chairman (and co-founder) Alan Charles Raul commented, "The Washington legal community is getting more and more excited and committed to Lawyers Have Heart. Next year, even more runners and walkers will join in this healthy public service event that is fun and fulfilling."

In the same report the following was recorded, "We are simply delighted by the outpouring of support from the Washington legal community for this worthwhile event", said co-chairman (and co-founder) Rick Frank. "Thanks to their participation, we were able to raise nearly $125,000 for research and community education programs for the American Heart Association Nation's Capital Affiliate."

The event will be timed by Capital Running Company and the ChampionChip will be used. The overall and master winners will be determined by the "clock time" and teams and age groups winners will be by "chip time."
