African Runners Dominate the First Annual Charlottesville Fall Classic 10K Road Championship
October 26, 2008
Charlottesville, VA
For the Washington Running Report

Four African runners (two Kenyan and two Ethiopians) and two local runners took the victory at the First Annual Charlottesville Fall Classic Road Championship. The men's field was dominated by Nicholas Kurgat of Kenya. Nicholas trains in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but is originally from Kenya. Nicholas winning time was 30:06. Second place went to Abiyot Abebe who trains in Silver Spring, MD but is from Ethiopia. Ryan Woods of Boone, NC was third.

The women's field was taken by Hirut Mandefro, who trains in Silver Spring and is from Ethiopia. Hiriut's time was 35:23. Second place went to Divina Jepkogei, who trains with Nicholas Krugat under the coaching of Ben Krugat at Team Global Mbio. Ben Krugat is not only the team coach, but also a UVA Alumni and past Charlottesville resident. Of Charlottesville, Ben said: "After six years, it's wonderful to be back in such a beautiful town, and I look forward to more trips up here." The women's third place went to Shannon Saunders from Charlottesville, VA.

The master's title went to Morris Bodrick (36:24) from Fort Lee, VA. The women's master title went to local Charlottesville runner, Hosni Haghighian (43:45).

Runners of all ages and abilities enjoyed the warmer and damp conditions. The rain held off for most of the race. The First Annual Costume competition winner was Rudy Kahsar who, despite the suspenders and bulky hat, ran a great race (36:53) and placed third in a tough age group.

This race will prove to be a tradition for many years to come. The cash prizes ($500 to the winners, $250 to second, and $150 to third and masters) and the fast course will also continue to attract elite athletes from Charlottesville and beyond.

A special thank you goes to the bike team (Team Bike Factory) and all the volunteers, who endured the rain and helped lead all the runners home. Also, we want to thank Charlottesville Running Company and Bad to the Bone Endurance Sports, organizers of the race and all our sponsors.

We look forward to the 2009 edition of the Charlottesville Fall Classic 10K Road Championship.
