Runners, walkers and volunteers are needed for the 3rd Annual
Prince George's County Victims of Crime Fund Run/Walk, a
charity event to raise money to assist victims of violence in
Prince George's County. The course is flat and scenic with
timing by the Annapolis Striders; cash prizes will be awarded
to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K.This Autumn Trek 5K Run and 1 mile walk will be held Saturday,
October 15, 2005 at 9:00am at Watkins Park (Picnic Area Zero)
in Upper Marlboro, MD. Check-in time: 7:45am. Warm-up: 8:30am.
Start: 9:00 am.
This year's event is dedicated to Sgt. Steve Gaughan, PGPD
#1734, who was murdered in the line of duty on June 21, 2005.
Proceeds from the Run/Walk will be used to maintain an
emergency funding source for crime victims. The event is
sponsored by Mayland Crime Victims' Resource Center and the
State's Attorneys' Office.
Cash prizes to the first 3 finishers in the 5K run, men and
women: $75 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third
overall. There are also awards for age groups and teams. Entry
fee: $20 if received before October 14, $25 on race day. There
will be a T-shirt for the first 300 entrants.
The post-race party will offer delicious food to all
participants (Panera Bread, Joe Lasick's Catering, and Outback
Steakhouse--who will grill hamburgers and chicken sandwiches)
and great music. Each entrant is eligible for more than $1,000
in random prizes from local sponsors.
The course with mile markers is flat and scenic in one of
Prince George County's most beautiful parks.
A tribute to Homicide and Motor vehicular Manslaughter
Survivors:
Survivors who wish to walk or run in honor of their loved one
may pickup "In Memory of " bibs at the registration desk. A
special entry fee price of $15.00 will be offered to survivors.
Crime victim brochures, referrals, services and compensation
information will be available.
As with last year's race, a group will run in honor of the
fallen police officers, who were killed in Prince George's
County.
Directions: From the Capital Beltway (I-95), take exit 15 east
onto Central Avenue (Route 214). Continue for approximately 3
miles and turn right at Watkins Park Dr (Route 193). Follow for
about 3/4 mile to park entrance on right.
From Annapolis, take Route 50 west to 301 south to Central
Avenue. Go 5 miles on 214 and turn left at light (Watkins Park
Drive).
