Autumn Trek 5K & 1 Mile Walk in Watkins Park

Race for Victims of Crime
from Victims' Fund Run
September 12, 2005

Runners, walkers and volunteers are needed for the 3rd Annual Prince George's County Victims of Crime Fund Run/Walk, a charity event to raise money to assist victims of violence in Prince George's County. The course is flat and scenic with timing by the Annapolis Striders; cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K.

This Autumn Trek 5K Run and 1 mile walk will be held Saturday, October 15, 2005 at 9:00am at Watkins Park (Picnic Area Zero) in Upper Marlboro, MD. Check-in time: 7:45am. Warm-up: 8:30am. Start: 9:00 am.

This year's event is dedicated to Sgt. Steve Gaughan, PGPD #1734, who was murdered in the line of duty on June 21, 2005. Proceeds from the Run/Walk will be used to maintain an emergency funding source for crime victims. The event is sponsored by Mayland Crime Victims' Resource Center and the State's Attorneys' Office.

Cash prizes to the first 3 finishers in the 5K run, men and women: $75 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third overall. There are also awards for age groups and teams. Entry fee: $20 if received before October 14, $25 on race day. There will be a T-shirt for the first 300 entrants.

The post-race party will offer delicious food to all participants (Panera Bread, Joe Lasick's Catering, and Outback Steakhouse--who will grill hamburgers and chicken sandwiches) and great music. Each entrant is eligible for more than $1,000 in random prizes from local sponsors.

The course with mile markers is flat and scenic in one of Prince George County's most beautiful parks.

A tribute to Homicide and Motor vehicular Manslaughter Survivors:
Survivors who wish to walk or run in honor of their loved one may pickup "In Memory of " bibs at the registration desk. A special entry fee price of $15.00 will be offered to survivors. Crime victim brochures, referrals, services and compensation information will be available.

As with last year's race, a group will run in honor of the fallen police officers, who were killed in Prince George's County.

Directions: From the Capital Beltway (I-95), take exit 15 east onto Central Avenue (Route 214). Continue for approximately 3 miles and turn right at Watkins Park Dr (Route 193). Follow for about 3/4 mile to park entrance on right. From Annapolis, take Route 50 west to 301 south to Central Avenue. Go 5 miles on 214 and turn left at light (Watkins Park Drive).
