Back-to-School 8K Classic

Something Old, Something New
By Jim Hage
September 21, 2008
Chevy Chase, MD
For the Washington Running Report

Old met new at the 21st Back-to-School Classic, with a little something for everyone in between.

Old because this "classic," an event that actually earns the honorific, heads into its third decade as the paragon of a small-town, big-hearted family event, with a 2K and Kids Fun Run accompanying the main event. New because this year's race helped field test and perfect Capital Running Company's ChronoTrack system, which features a disposable, paper-thin "D- tag" that attaches to shoelaces and records start and finish times.

Peter Silverman (23, photo) also added to the new with a win in his first road race since graduating last May from Chapman University in Orange County, CA, where he is the 8K cross country school record holder.

Silverman, a native of Washington, led from the start, getting out fast with a 5-minute 17-second opening mile and finishing first in 26:46. But it is not as if he never looked back. "I was running scared the whole way," Silverman said, "trying to keep the intensity going. But I'm really happy with the win."

Silverman is the assistant cross country and track coach at Georgetown Day School in the District.

Mike Sheehy (36), from Washington, was second in 27:53 and former race winner Anthony Belber (35), from Washington, and the head distance running coach at GDS, took fifth in 28:30.

More old--okay, that is not really fair. But masters runner Anita Freres (43), from Reston, VA, (in photo) came from behind to earn what she said was her first win in several years, running 32:10. "Because of all the little kids around, I was really relaxed at the start," Freres said, "I went out nice and easy and worked my way to the front" about midway through the race.

Paula Pels (41), third here the past two years, moved up a spot and finished second in 32:35.

Really old? How about Bob Gurtler (73), who outran many runners a fraction of his age with a fine 49:54 performance. Gurtler helps organize Kelvy's 5K Run on October 4 in The Plains, VA, the town in which he also happens to be mayor. Gurtler, a rocket scientist (really) by profession, completed his 88th race of 2008.

"It's good to be on the top side of the grass rather than looking up at the roots," Gurtler said.

Old, but young at heart.

Welcome to the Human Race: Brendon Smith (14), a soccer player at St. Andrews, enjoyed some cross-training in the 2K, his first foray into road racing.

Welcome to the Race: Sasha (3), a Labrador and German Shepherd mix, wearing a T-shirt, a number and a smile, ran the 2K with Olivia Muro (11), from Somerset. "She's not a good runner," Muro said. "But she was really excited to run, until she saw another dog or a squirrel."

Jacqueline O'Neil (77) of Washington, DC is cheerfully escorted to the finish by Jose Ayala (65) of Kensington, MD.
