Break the Silence: Walk/Run for Ovarian Cancer 5K

  • 5-10-08 Break the Silence: Walk/Run for Ovarian Cancer 5K (Reston, VA) at 9:00 AM
    Entering its sixth year, the 2008 5K race is again sanctioned by the U.S. Track and Field Association with prize money for the top 3 open male and female finishers. A maximum field of 600 runners will compete in the certified 5K along the scenic W&OD trail. Several hundred more, including ovarian cancer survivors, their friends and family members, will participate in the 1-Mile walk that winds its way around the town center. Up to 1,500 spectators will be present along both routes and at the finish, making the Virginia Run/Walk for the Whisper an increasingly popular sporting event.


    In-person registration is being held Friday, May 9th at the Metro Run & Walk store in Falls Church from 1:00 to 7:00 PM and on Saturday, May 10th at the Reston Town Center until 9:00 AM.

    The beautiful and historic Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg, Maryland is the site for the 29th annual Run Through History. On September 17, 1862, one of the most important battles of the Civil War took place here. The 10K race features a cash purse for open and masters runners, and a cash bonus for a new course record! Proceeds from the event benefit APPLES for Children, Inc., and Head Start of Washington County.

    Join the Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation for A Day at the Races on the grounds of the beautiful 1200 acre estate at Morven Park in Leesburg, VA. A full morning of activities will include a ChronoTrack-timed 5K cross-country race using the equestrian trails and a few "obstacles," a Family Fun Mile, a "Road Apple Rally," Carriage House Museum tours, and more! Proceeds benefit the programs offered by Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation.

    Autism Speaks is the largest private financier of autism research and resources in the country. Of every dollar donated to Autism Speaks, 77 cents funds research, advocacy, awareness, and family support services. Participating in this July 4th community event helps raise funds that will ultimately lead to a cure for research and better treatments. The race offers chip timing over a scenic course. It is a great way to kick off your holiday weekend. We offer wonderful retail/restaurant age group prizes as well as cash awards for top finishers as well as masters winners. Please join us as we celebrate our nation's birthday!

    The 2008 Rockville Rotary Twilight Runfest is the 23rd running of Rockville's summer night block party. The Twilighter is one of the most popular races of the summer in the National Capital area. The event consists of the 8K race and a 1K fun run followed by a live band, refreshments and beer, random prizes, and an overall rockin' good evening. There will be plenty of parking nearby, but come by Metrorail and you will not have to drive home!

    In honor of Jessica Meredith Jacobsen's memory, the Knights Of Columbus Council # 4011 (Father O'Neil Council) has organized the first annual Jessica Meredith Jacobsen 5K Memorial Run on September 13, 2008. In addition to memorializing Jessica, an avid runner whose spirit and charitable works inspire us, the 5K Run will support the House of Ruth and the ICS Tuition Assistance Fund, and Fr. O'Neill Charities. The race goes through the heart of Towson starting and ending at Immaculate Conception Church. A party with music and prizes will immediately follow the race. Cash awards will be provided to overall winners and medals to men and women of each age group. All runners will receive a tee shirt that has been designed by local artist, Andrew Snair. Walkers are also welcome to participate.

It is conveniently located within walking distance from the College Park Metro Station. Back at the Ellen Linson Swimming Pool, a fun walk, kids race, activities, free T-shirts, refreshments, and entertainment round out the festivities. Sponsored by Maryland Parks and Planning, Vecna and others with a commitment to giving back to the community, all proceeds from the race go to charities in Prince George's County, so it is good for your heart in all kinds of ways.     The Hebrew Home of Greater Washington once again partners with the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes. Big changes welcome participants; the course ends on East Jefferson Street at Federal Plaza, more food and beverage at the post race party, more activities for kids and families, and upgraded hi-tech t- shirts for all race participants! This long-standing community event offers a 10K, 5K, and fun run.

The Brain Aneurysm Race for Awareness 8K

  • 10-04-08 Brain Aneurysm Race for Awareness 8K in Memory of Timothy Susco (Reston VA) at 8:30 AM
    * Come see American record-holder in the mile Alan Webb and run a certified 8K that is sanctioned by USA Track & Field. As many as 1,000 runners are expected to compete along the rolling, scenic course that starts and ends at South Lakes High School. In addition to the 8K, a 2K fun run will wind its way along tree-covered paths around the school. Cash prizes will be awarded to top three male and female finishers in the 8K and the top two finishers in each of the 5-year age group categories will win gift certificates to Metro Run/Walk, the official running shoe and apparel store of the race. Packet pick-up and registration will occur from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 3, 2008 at the Reston Hospital and on race day at the high school. Dozens of spectators and volunteers will be present along the routes and at the finish.

Under Armour Baltimore Running Festival - Marathon/Half Marathon/5K

  • 10-11-08 Under Armour Baltimore Running Festival - Marathon/Half Marathon/5K (Baltimore, MD)
    Now in its seventh the Under Armour Baltimore Running Festival has it all. Starting in 2002 with a 5K, it added a half marathon the following year. Then in 2004, the race expanded to a marathon as well. In 2007, the festival added relay teams. In the marathon, John Itati won in 2:16:24 and Gladys Asiba won in 2:36:27. Both were the fastest times in the region for 2007. Belainesh Gebre won the half marathon in 1:14:45 for sixth overall and first women to earn the prestigious Open Runner of the Year in for the Washington Running Report Runner Rankings. Just announced, the races will be timed using the ChronoTrack disposable D-tag timing system.

    * Every day, law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for our safety and protection. Now, here is your chance to salute their service and sacrifice by participating in the "Race to Remember"--the first National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial 5K, on Sunday, October 19, 2008, in downtown Washington, DC. Beginning at 8:30 AM at the beautiful National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Judiciary Square, the 5K course takes runners past such cherished landmarks as the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and the National Mall. ChronoTrack timing, awards in ten-year age groups, refreshments and unique law enforcement-related give- aways. Organized by the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC, the race benefits the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, a not-for-profit that honors fallen law enforcement officers and is working to build the first-ever National Law Enforcement Museum in DC.

    Montgomery County's oldest continuous race, the 33rd running of the Rockville 10K/5K is the final race in the Rockville Triple Race Series. The race series includes the DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, the Rockville Rotary Twilight Runfest 8K, and the 10K race of the Rockville 10K/5K. The race series has a $1,000 prize pot that is in addition to non-cash prizes given to Rockville 10K and 5K winners. New this year - the 10K component of the Rockville 10K/5K serves as the 10K qualifier for the Official Maryland Senior Olympics.

    The BA 5K Run & 1K Walk, presented by the Sydney Moss Fund, will raise money to continue Biliary Atresia (BA) research at the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Liver Center. Not much is known about BA, a rare and serious liver disease that affects newborns, and the only "cure" lies in a liver transplant. Please join our efforts! Our goal is to raise $25,000 to support research leading to exciting BA discoveries. If we can find a cause, we can find a cure!

    The 6th annual 5K Race for Research walk/run is a key way to raise awareness and funds to support the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. This event, beginning at Cameron Run Regional Park in Alexandria, VA, is fun for the entire family. Form your own team and run or walk for the cure. Pre-registered runners may pick up their bib number, T-shirt, and goody bag race day from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners and the top three men/women in the following age divisions: 14 & younger, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 & older.
    With the MMRF, 93 cents of every dollar of revenue raised is directed towards research and education for multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer.
