During discussion of their performances at the Army Ten Miler on the RunWashington e-mail list serve, many runners expressed gratitude that they did not have to run around Hains Point. Races at Hains Point are run on a flat, fast course on a good surface in a natural setting with little traffic. What's not to like? Herewith, Hugh Matlock's personal top ten:

10. Grey is not my favorite color in the morning.

9. I already spend too much time thinking about what life must be like as a duck.

8. The mile marker I just timed was left over from a different race.

7. I remember that I always wanted to get my picture taken with The Awakening, but can't stop now.

6. I can see how far back I really am.

5. At the turn-around, I learn there has been a stiff breeze at my back.

4. I have time to think about what I am doing.

3. The second half is harder than it looks.

2. No one else seems to mind.
