DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K 29:05
Ryan Carroll (25) of Portsmouth, VA, matching his age exactly at the Shamrock Festival 8K, finishes third in his division with 25:00.
The top three runners met at the Shamrock Half Marathon. Ezkyas Sisay pulled off another historic double, winning both teen and Open divisions. He raced home in 1:04:38. Jason Schoener of Richmond, VA was next in 1:05:37, followed closely by Will Christian in 1:06:19. Eleventh place Michael Wardian was runner- up at the Shamrock Marathon in 2:24:55 behind sixth place Samuel Gebremichael of Hyattsville, MD (2:22:41). Two weeks later, Wardian returned for the third National Marathon and his 2:25:00 makes him the only winner the race has ever had. At the half there, Christian took another shot at Sisay, coming up short by a little with 1:06:55. Sisay won it all in 1:06:17.
Schoener firmed his hold on second place, racing the Ukrop's 10K in 29:56. Two weeks later, Christian ran his Dismal Swamp Stomp for his third half. His 1:05:33 put him very close to catching Schoener. Steven Crane has been a regular tape breaker this year. At Credit Union Cherry Blossom he was 13th as the first American in 49:41. He won the Van Metre 5M in 24:15. At DARCARS Pike's Peek the top five runners ran between 29:01 and 29:13 but Wlison Komen in seventh overall was the first in the race to qualify. His 30:19 gave him the fifth tab in the rankings.
The next local runner at Credit Union Cherry Blossom was Robert Wade in 50:53. That tied him with Gebremichael. Gebremichael took the next slot, finishing the Shamrock 8K in 24:32, while Wade ran van Metre in 25:12. Then Charlie Hurt, who ran the Charlottesville 10M to victory in 51:02, added the Ukrop's 10K in 30:38 to move Wade down to eighth place.
Nathan Brigham is ninth with a swift 51:02 at Credit Union Cherry Blossom. He added a nice DARCARS Pike's Peek in 30:55. Dave Berdan of Baltimore, MD filled out the top ten with the top-flight Kelly's Shamrock 5K win in 14:44. Sixty runners qualified for the Open Division.

Shamrock Festival Half Marathon 1:04:38, 10K = 29:20
Will Christian (24) of Norfolk, VA has three excellent half marathons, including a 1:05:33 at the Dismal Swamp Stomp to earn third in the Open Division.
Ezkyas Sisay is running out of time to be the open and teen winner. He retains the titles he earned in the winter. By early fall, he will be 20 and give another teen a chance for the crown. For now, his dominance is complete. His six victories are all faster than any other teen. He won the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 24:39. The following week at the world class Shamrock 8K he was fifth in the 8K in 24:39 and ran the half marathon the next day in 1:04:38 for the fastest time in the division. Later in March, he won it all at the National Half Marathon in 1:06:17. In May, he leisurely loped to another win at the Potomac River HM in 1:10:27. That was one day after finishing as runner-up at the Apple Blossom 10K in 30:38.
At Apple Blossom, Simon Biddle-Snead took the runner-up spot with a flashy 32:39. Mason Campbell of Towson, MD had the fastest 5K, running 15:57 at the Packard Center Fiesta to snatch it all. Sixteen-year-old Andrew Rigler was next with an overall 5K victory of his own (16:03). Richard Saunders outlasted fifth place Justin Kendall at the Carytown 10K 34:54 to 35:05 for sixth. Kendall had a slew of 5K wins, including the Henrico in 16:27 to take fifth.
Forty-four runners qualified for the division.

Charlottesville 10 Mile 51:55, 10K = 31:14
Philippe Rolly of Fairfax, VA is a multiple winner of the St. Patrick's Day 10K. It is no surprise he would come back for the 8K as he enters the new division. He finished seventh overall this time in a sharp 25:46. The day before, Rob Cook of Charlottesville, VA had set the standard at the Martha Jefferson 8K with 25:19, winning it all. Soon to be 40, Ray Pugsley of Sterling, VA took his turn at the slightly longer Van Metre 5M, finishing in 26:27.
In late March, Cook nailed down the title with a swift Charlottesville 10 Mile in 51:55. He was the runner-up in the race. Rolly took the runner-up spot in the division with a tense clash holding off Pugsley 31:43 to 31:53. Michael Colaiacovo of Baltimore, MD was next in line with 33:02, followed by Pekka Stenholm of Columbia, MD in 33:22. That time earned him sixth in the division. His time was slightly faster than Noah Zaring's Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 55:41, but he also finished Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 57:47.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 33:11
Andres Wright of Frederick, MD was loaded for bear. He wanted the division title. He blitzed the Shamrock 8K in 26:50, finishing second by 1.7 seconds with third place seven-tenths of a second behind him. More importantly, he easily passed former champion John Piggott (28:02) and Tim Schuler (27:37). In this time of racing festivals, typically runners save some for the second race. Wright won the half marathon the next day in 1:16:03 ahead of seventh place Tom Purcell of Virginia Beach, VA (1:17:15). Piggott returned to his first love, the marathon, in 2:48:15.
Piggott had a pressure packed spring, maybe with too many marathons this year. He had run the Lower Potomac Marathon the week before in 2:47:51 for third overall. Christopher Hamley of Hyattsville, MD was starting his own marathon chorus line just ahead of him in 2:46:46. To end the month, he had a reprise at the National Marathon in 2:35:46 while Piggott ran his third March marathon in 2:42:22.
Wright was back in the news at Credit Union Cherry Blossom as the second master in 55:53, well ahead of fifth place Peter Keating's 57:04. Piggott answered back with Dismal Swamp Stomp HM in 1:15:03. It came down to DARCARS Pike's Peek to unseat Hamley's fine marathon for the crown. Wright was ready but could not hold off an inspired Schuler, losing to him 33:11 to 33:35. Schuler had won the second Pike's Peek in 1997 with 30:22.
Hamley's race held up for the runner-up spot and Piggott's half earned him fourth place. Mark Gilmore is now 40 and had the fastest 5K, winning the GW Parkway Classic in 16:31 for sixth place. Only Wright made the Open Division.

Apple Blossom 10K, 33:10
The major players do not hesitate to do battle at major races. As soon as the ranking period began, four of the top six runners met at the St. Patrick's Day 8K. Mark Stickley won handily in 26:51 and that was almost all he needed to capture the title. Runner-up Greg Cauller of York, PA edged third place Dave Berardi of Catonsville, MD 27:47 to 27:50 with sixth place Jean-Christophe Arcaz of Rockville, MD well within hailing distance at 27:55. Fourth place David Cascio struggled that day, finishing in 28:54. The following week in Virginia Beach Cauller again bested Berardi. This time it was 27:18 to 27:34.
Nobody followed Stickley to Richmond for the largest 10K race in the region. He blasted a fine 33:18. That weekend Cascio stepped up to win the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 57:59 just ahead of Arcaz (58:09). Then it was time to get down to brass tacks. At DARCARS Pike's Peek, Cauller unwrapped a nice 33:20 as the second masters spot. The next four times were all age group award winners there: Berardi (34:11), Cascio (34:13), David Haaga (34:31), and Arcaz (34:52).
In May, Stickley again ruled his hometown 10K, the Apple Blossom, in 33:10, making him the oldest male Open Division runner this period. Haaga added the fastest Marathon with 2:42:39. Seventh place James Coombes of Norfolk, VA debuted in the division with the second fastest 5K in 16:43.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K = 34:01
Peter Darmody (52) of Gaithersburg, MD is second in his division at DARCARS Pike's Peek in 36:54.
Mark Malander of Oak Hill, VA was quivering at the starting line ready to take over the grandmaster title for the region. He tossed aside a former champion, Dan Lawson, to open the period at St. Patrick's Day 8K. That was his worst effort, winning 27:53 to 29:36. To win the division, he had to go through Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA. So he did. The following week he charged to the Tidewater region and set down Chantry 27:32 to 28:03 at the Shamrock 8K. He just could not wait to get at the third former champion, Maurice Pointer. That meant racing the Shamrock HM the very next day. He won 1:18:49 to 1:19:35.
Malander then cemented his stranglehold on the division, winning at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 57:48 ahead of Pointer again (59:32). Then he went to DARCARS Pike's Peek where the "grandmaster championships" were held last year. His 34:01 was far ahead of 9th place Peter Darmody (36:54). It would have defeated all but one of the grandmasters from last year's race.
James Bates of Hampton, VA stayed south this year. He split 5K wins with Chantry; both times the winner was second overall. In April, Bates won Queens Lake in 17:14; in May, Chantry won with 17:18. Bates ran two marathons and had nine age group wins and earns the fifth spot. Pointer's three top races, including a 15K in 55:53 gave him the third spot. The fourth place in the rankings went to a runner who never finished worse than second overall in his three races, Pete Gibson. His best was the Run for Independence with the fastest 5K (17:11).

Five of last spring's top six are gone. A new face appeared on the scene. Alan Pemberton of Silver Spring, MD was what appeared to be an upset winner at the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 31:11. Fifth place Roland Rust was next in 31:21 and third place Ken Umbarger of Gaithersburg, MD was still getting his act together, finishing in 31:59. Meanwhile, in the south, Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA swept through VAB in the Shamrock 8K in 30:16 looking good for the title.
Then came Credit Union Cherry Blossom and dark horse Pemberton uncorked a 1:02:30 to win the age group and the title. Fourth place Tim Morgan of Damascus was next at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:05:54. Platt fired back with an 18:21 at the Queen's Lake 5K and nearly got there with an excellent Dismal Swamp Stomp HM in 1:23:07.
Next came Pike's Peek and, though Ken Umbarger's 38:11 age group win would have been 8th place last year, it spotted him firmly in third place for the ranking period. Morgan moved out of a tie with Rust on their second races and took the higher placing, winning 38:23 to 39:05. Larry Washington was sixth running 39:15.

Suddenly Bill Joyce (64) of Herndon, VA, who will age up in January, is the dominate racer in the division.
Always there is a thundering herd of runners in this division, one for each card in the deck. The top spot was so close we needed a long look at the Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) to break the deadlock. Last year's champion, Mike Hazilla, had only a solo blitz into the rankings. Fall winner Ronnie Wong was marathon crazy and John Kirkpatrick had aged up. Patrick Griffith was in town from Ocala, FL to race twice but even had he counted he would not have knocked off the top two gladiators.
Bill Joyce of Herndon, VA has been training hard and his times have continued to drop. Jason Page of Hamilton, VA expects to win his division and was set to avenge his third place ranking in the winter. Joyce was in no hurry to get out of his way. Page opened the period with a beleaguered 20:04 at the Stupid 5K, though it creamed the course record. A week later Joyce hurrahed the National HM in 1:28:02 for a sub 40:00 10K equivalent, putting the world on notice that he wanted to "turn the Page." Page later improved his 5K to 19:38. Joyce answered to end the period with 19:24 at the Atoms 5K. While Joyce was racing the Patriot's Cup in 32:43 on May 4, Page was already celebrating the tiebreaker win at Apple Blossom in 39:54. He later added a Germantown 5M in 32:06 for icing the cake, winning the MRF battle 39 to 27.
Bernard Wright lost a close battle at Credit Union Cherry Blossom to Jim Noone 1:08:21 to1:08:25 but won the war for third place with his 41:07 at DARCARS Pike's Peek. Noone later ran Apple Blossom in 42:31. L.C.Moore of Danville slides into fifth at Shamrock 5K in 19:51. Peter Rodenbaugh of Woodbridge, VA ran Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:08:59. Ronnie Wong out muscled Ed Lecates for seventh place with a 19:56 to 20:06 win at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 41:15
Lou Shapiro continued his rampage in the division. He won the same way as last spring, a victory at DARCARS Pike's Peek. This year he had a 41:15 best time for the 10K, which would qualify him for the Open Women at age 66. Fourth place Sonny Barber had a solid 43:48. Shapiro shellacked the competition at Credit Union Cherry Blossom with a PR 1:09:24. Third place Skip Mullaney had the next best 10 Mile time with a 1:13:06 win at Charlottesville. Jim Becker of Greencastle, PA won the battle of the halves with his 1:34:45 at Frederick in May. Mullaney ran his hometown half in 1:35:57.
Shapiro had 11 age group wins in all, including the Patriot's Cup 8K in 33:48. Robert Wright of Hampton snagged fifth with a 21:10 5K. That was only a second behind Shapiro's two best 5Ks. Becker was the leader there, racing the Mission of Mercy 5K in 20:49. Regional runner Jack Pitarra of Baltimore, MD does a lot of club races where the terrain is less than forgiving. His Whitehall 15K in 1:08:24 earns him the sixth spot.

Southern Virginia made its way last year to DARCARS Pike's Peek to see what the fuss was about. This year, Duane Lougee of Norfolk, VA decided to try out the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. It fitted quite nicely for a 1:16:29 win and the division title. Only Richard Williams (now California based) dreamed of catching him, running 1:18:10. Next came fourth place Ken Quincy who outlasted sixth place Jerry Lewis 1:24:07 to 1:24:27.
Lougee had started the period winning his face-off with Chan Robbins at the Shamrock 8K in 37:15. Robbins was within sight at 37:36. The week before Robbins had a big win over Skip Grant at the St. Patrick's Day 8K, 37:22 to 38:27. Grant came storming back at DARCARS Pike's Peek, besting Robbins 46:58 to 47:16 to earn the runner-up spot.

The top three guys in this division have been battling for decades. Third place Larry Dickerson has been making a comeback and had four wins. Jack McMahon has been a constant with six wins. George Yannakakis stepped up with seven wins. Between them they accounted for the top 18 times in the division. Yannakakis had six of the top seven times, including a Credit Union Cherry Blossom victory in 1:25:11. McMahon had the second fastest time, running DARCARS Pike's Peek in 51:50. Dickerson is staying with the 5K for now, running five of them with a top time of 26:12.

Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, MD rarely travels far for races and does not race often. When he does, look out! He took on two of the three most competitive races (DARCARS Pike's Peek and Credit Union Cherry Blossom with more than 500 ranked times) and cremated the field. His 1:33:59 win at the ten-mile was 31 minutes ahead of runner-up Wendell Golden's Charlottesville 10M, which has been run for 32 years vs. CB's 36 years. Then at the 10K, he blasted a 56:14, breaking Walt Washburn's course record of 57:14 set in 2004. Washburn makes fourth in the rankings. At 85, he ran the Reston 5K in 42:10. Harry Freestone is third racing the Autism 5K in 37:29.
