George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 47:30, 10K = 28:35

What would have happened at DARCARS Pike's Peek if some very swift Africans had not gotten lost? Perhaps this period's regular recidivist champion would have had to run faster instead of winning Pike's Peek in 29:27. Indeed, Kumsa met five top out-of-towners at Sallie Mae for his second best race, finishing second overall in 30:08. This normally prolific racer had only two other races, one a comparative waltz, winning the GW Parkway 5K in 14:56, one-tenth of a mile ahead of 17th place Brian Baillie. The other was a third place finish at the National HM in 69:01.
The next six runners are all in a tight pack not far back of Kumsa. Stephen Crane leads with a strong confident psyche. Along with Patrick MacAdie of Washington, DC, these two tall runners can be seen in many photos right behind the diminutive Kumsa. Indeed, at the National HM Crane ran 68:57 to outlast Kumsa. At the Parkway Classic, the two front-runners are world class and were long gone early in the race. Crane was a dominant third place in 49:45 (10K = 29:56). Trading victories this year, MacAdie had won at Cherry Blossom 49:51 to 50:02. Still, his second race was the National HM in 1:11:24.
Edmund Burke lost to Crane at Credit Union Cherry Blossom running 50:16. At DARCARS Pike's Peek, he returned the favor with a 30:04 to 30:14 triumph. John Bitok (30:11) and Biranu Wakuw (30:15) earned their spots at Pike's Peek as well. Beruk Deberework ran 30:49 there, but earned his seventh spot with a GW Parkway Classic 50:28.
Still closely cluttered, Michael Wardian's Olympic class marathon of 2:21:37 won him eighth place. Or maybe his over racing loss to these racers (31:30) at Pike's Peek cost him a few spots. Wardian has nine marathons already this year to go with a slew of other races. Eric Lavigne of Leesburg, VA gets the lean over tenth place Dave Berdan of Parkville at Cherry Blossom 50:28 to 50:30.
These top guys are all mega racers. Eleventh place Nick Gramsky ran 31:05 at Sallie Mae and then surprised Edmund Burke, winning the Capitol Hill Classic 10K 31:04 to 31:14. After the race, a relaxed Burke was seen talking with Stephen Crane. Crane had held off a rally by Beruk Deberework at the Mid- Atlantic Federal Credit Union Germantown 5-Miler 24:29 to 24:31 the morning before. Both beat John Bitok's 24:53. Wardian was at both of these races as well. Crane did not seem at all worried that he would win but he took the following day off to just watch the race.

Apple Blossom 10K, 30:50
Ezkyas Sisay of Washington, DC had a monster Apple Blossom in 30:50 to cruise to the division title. He did not make the open division because his second race, the Potomac River HM, was a tad slower 1:16:17 (10K = 34:37). Rising star Neal Darmody did not have that issue. Using the two most competitive races in the period and usually for the year, he sealed up the runner-up spot. At Cherry Blossom he met fourth place Linde Cooper of York, PA and ousted him 55:30 to 57:57. Again at Pike's Peek he PR'ed in 32:22 while Cooper settled in at 35:05. Hammer Rexford won the division for his only race with 31:51. Last year Linde had run 34:32 ahead of young Darmody's 34:40.
William Garland of Virginia Breach, VA capped both ends of the period with fine 5Ks. In March, he was second overall at the Shamrock in 16:13. In May, he won outright the Run for Independence in 16:22.
Neal Darmody and William Garland also made the Open Division.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 30:04
The Shamrock Festival means the division's fastest marathon for Matt Boyd, the loquacious red head from Fredericksburg, VA.
The first four made the Open Division as well as Paul Rades, who turned 35 during the period but competed only in the Open Division.
Back when he was a young man, Edmund Burke of Burtonsville, MD was known for this three peat at St. Patrick's Day back when it was a 10K. Between 1996 and 1998, he won with 30:52, 31:06, and 30:50. In 1999, he settled for third place with 30:37. So, ten years later, where did this mild mannered professor come up with the idea of breaking 30:00? He said it would be a new PR if he did. After running an excellent age group win at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 50:16, he decided to ride the fast competition and fast course at DARCARS Pike's Peek. He lit after the always-competitive Gurmesa Kumsa and ignored all the others pushing him from behind. His 30:04 was second overall at the race, easily winning him the division crown.
Rob Magin of Olney, MD does not race as much as he used to. Sure, he is the resident stud for the Montgomery County Road Runners, winning their Trolley 5M in 26:34. At the Pike, he was an age group winner with 32:41, just ahead of third place Mike Colaiacovo of Baltimore, MD (32:59). Colaiacovo had a fine Cherry Blossom in 55:55 ahead of fourth place Kevin Yates of Olney, MD (56:43) and Ian Blair (57:32). Yates also ran Pike's Peek in 34:16. Blair just edged sixth place Matt Boyd of Fredericksburg, VA who ran the Shamrock Marathon in 2:41:36. Blair's second race, a 10K, was a little faster than Boyd's as well.

George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 53:39,10K = 32:17
Last period's top two runners started right up again. Mark Stickley ran the Shamrock HM in 1:11:20 (10K = 32:22). John Piggott, who prefers the marathon, racing three times during the period, ran 2:38:45 (10K = 34:04). Perhaps his warm-up Shamrock 8K the morning before in 28:07 was too aggressive. Six days later, he ran the National Marathon with a full day's rest and produced an excellent 2:31:38 (10K = 32:32). That might have been enough to close on Stickley except that he added an excellent 54:16 (10K = 32:39) to the mix at the GW Parkway 10 Mile.
Enter Doug Mock. Mock trains more than he races. His victory over Stickley at the Parkway with a brilliant 53:39 (10K = 32:17) secured him the masters crown. The following week at Pike's Peek was supposed to be highlighted by a massive visit from the southern region. Many did come but for some reason the impatient Piggott chose to win the Chesapeake 10K in 34:25 the day before or maybe he was resting from his Dismal Swamp HM in 1:12:28. Tenth place Steve Menzies came north and matched that in 34:26.
Still, Mock's trip down the pike was no cakewalk. Andres Wright of Frederick, MD has been making a huge splash since turning 40. He had the fastest 5K at the Parkway in 16:09 while the others went long. Then, at the Pike, he dogged Mock the whole way before acquiescing, 32:43 to 32:57. The following week Wright won at Sallie Mae in 33:36 while Stickley stayed home in Winchester to win the Apple Blossom 10K in 33:29.
The next three runners stayed in sub 34-minute land. Kevin Stover of York, PA ran the toughest of the spring 10Ks (Clyde's) to an overall victory in 33:53. Darrell General is on the way back to the days of his epic battles with Jim Hage. He bested Mark Hoon at Cherry Blossom 56:33 to 56:58. Then at Pike's Peek with both runners just behind, Hage's 33:42 became the closest finish of the race. Both runners had a chip time of 33:48 with the computer giving Hoon the split second win. The photo in our Web photo gallery shows that General overtook Hoon by a nose to win in 33:49 to 33:50. Every split second, even at the start of the race, counts.
To show the level of competition, last spring's champion, Chris Chattin of Columbia, MD, was ninth this year, just trailing Rodney Timpson at Pike's Peek 34:10 to 34:13.

Shamrock Festival Marathon, 2:35:09, 10K = 33:18

Everybody knows that Dai Roberts is fast but he does not race that often. He started the period with an excellent champion- maker Shamrock Marathon in 2:35:09, fit for an open runner. Marathons rarely win the division. Three days before the race, he had won the overall at the Shamrock 5K in 16:07 as his final tune-up and then after the first week we never heard from him again.
Greg Cauller of York, PA is basically known for his 5K. At Pike's Peek he told us that he never ran faster than 29 minutes for the 10K. He seems awed by those who have run 28 minutes. At 47, he still got third Masters title in 33:22 only a week after his third Masters victory at the GW Parkway Classic in 55:41. Second master Mark Stickley is one of the guys with a 28-minute 10K in his resume. Cauller's best two races combined for five seconds less than Roberts' best two races.
Back at Pike's Peek, David Haaga was next in line with his 33:34. That, with his age group win at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 56:27, gave him the third spot in the division. In fourth is the course record holder Jim Hage of Kensington, MD. In 2003, he had run the Pike in 31:34. This year he just made sure he topped grandmaster Chuck Moeser's 33:47 with his 33:40. Though he is not ready to be aged up yet, in February he will be 50.
Still long and lean, albeit a little more grey in his beard, Dave Berardi of Catonsville, MD had the second fastest 10-mile time, finishing the GW Parkway in 56:20. He also ran the Shamrock HM, which seems to be his best distance in 1:15:04. George Buckheit of Reston, VA is another with less than a year left of this age group. He ran Pike's Peek in 34:43 for sixth place.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 34:25
Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA just had to come north to find out about the Pike's Peek course. As with any champion, he was pleased to win but sure that his 34:25 could be improved upon. He really wanted the grandmaster crown he had taken away from Chuck Moeser but it was not to be. He also ran a swift 27:28 at the Shamrock 8K. He has the fastest 5K of the year at 16:46 and he really wants Moeser's 50-54 Virginia state record of 16:29. He has run that fast but not in Virginia . . . yet.
James Bates of Hampton, VA is almost forgotten after Chantry and Rick Platt. At Pike's Peek, he ignored the fact that he was a minute behind Platt at Ukrop's in 36:26. He ran Pike's Peek and blasted an exceptional 34:59 to snatch the runner-up spot.
After that things get dicey. The third spot goes to Tim Dunlap of Lancaster, PA. In March, he defeated fifth place Dan Lawson of Gaithersburg, MD at the St. Patrick's Day 8K 29:09 to 29:12, slow for both of them. Then Dunlap won at Cherry Blossom in 58:57 (10K = 35:28). Maurice Pointer won the battle with Lawson at Pike's Peek by a chip, though Lawson heard the beep one second before Pointer's shoe hit the mat at 35:33. Pointer also enjoyed seven age group wins, not including his Main Street Mile in 4:58, when he first was warned about the competition to be had at Pike's Peek. Pointer's second best effort was the Port to Fort 6K in 20:47 (10K = 35:39). Dan Lawson's solo age group win was the Capital Challenge 3M in 16:52.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 33:47
Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA was getting into great shape and making miraculous improvements. He had held the best 5K with 18:22 in the winter. Than he started the spring by setting the 8K mark with 29:46. In April, he set the half marathon mark at the Dismal Swamp with 1:18:35. This was after blasting a breakthrough 35:34 at the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K. He was given the chip time of 35:31 as the Virginia state record.
Then why was he concerned about his placing when he came north to Rockville for the DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K? He could be expected to break 35:00 and might have as he raced home in 35:21 with leg cramps in the last two miles.
Chuck Moeser of Sterling, VA has come out of retirement. Moeser tested the waters in March, racing the Scope It Out 5K in 17:08 for the Best of 2007. Then he mastered Cherry Blossom in 58:12. That was fun, so he improved at the GW Parkway in 57:35. Ever confident, he promised a grandmaster victory at Pike's Peek, which featured virtually every top runner in the region. After his huge victory in 33:47, the coronation was complete with Platt very much in command as next in line.
Third place Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD had a very solid Pike's Peek in 36:58 to separate himself from the pack. Fourth place Mick Slonaker of Columbia, MD was fourth at the Pike in 37:26. At Cherry Blossom, it was quite a bit closer as Slonaker was close behind Wright's 62:27 with 62:40. Blocking his view was Bill Taylor, who honed in on third place with 62:32. Taylor's 10K was Sallie Mae in 38:04, giving him fifth place. Wright blew the doors off the competition winning the Germantown 5-Miler in 29:49.
Note: The Best of 2007 joins the 8K and the 5-mile distances as one category. The 5 mile is 50 meters longer and Wright's time in only 3 seconds slower than Platt's 8K. You do the math.

Michael Hazilla (60) of Germantown, MD takes over the mantle left behind by Patrick Griffith who retired to Florida.
Michael Hazilla of Germantown, MD trains hard. At Wednesday night track workouts he is the first there and the last to leave. He geared up for two races. First, he dominated the Credit Union Cherry Blossom, winning in an excellent 62:16. Then at DARCARS Pike's Peek he flew over the course in a new record 37:00. Patrick Griffith, who has moved to Florida, held the old record.
Jason Page of Hamilton, VA had a very productive May. He won three races, including the Purcellville 5K in 18:29 and the Apple Blossom 10K in 38:36. After that the next four places were decided at Cherry Blossom and all were less than seventy minutes. Ronnie Wong of Catonsville, MD, with nine marathons already this year, earns third with his 66:32. Bernard Wright was next. He also was third overall at the Hospice 10K in 41:24. Jim Noone of Fairfax, VA cruised home in 68:14. Then he followed that with a fine 20:16 at the rolling Atoms 5K in May.
Herb Tolbert of Montgomery Village, MD is making his second comeback. He went mostly retired back in his late forties. He returned, then after a couple of fine grandmaster years, he coached and kept off the roads. Now he is back and gaining confidence with each race. Look for him to improve his 68:34 at Cherry Blossom soon.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 41:49
Last year John Elliott won the division at Pike's Peek in 41:53. This year he was injured and raced but once. Lou Shapiro of Silver Spring sprang to the title with his even faster 10K in 41:49. A month later his Capital Hill Classic 10K win in 42:41 matched exactly his Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile win of 1:10:57. That was just the best three of his nine age group wins.
The battle for runner-up was a lot closer. Jack Pitarra of Baltimore, MD ran a swift Ashland 10K in 43:22. Skip Mullaney of Charlottesville had a half marathon in 1:35:42 to match that. Mullaney had a year's best 5K in 20:52. Pitarra matched that with a year's best 15K in 1:07:14. Their third races were also matched evenly. Mullaney had four age group wins; Pitarra had two.
Fourth place Warren Prunella of Rockville, MD cannot be forgotten. He was second at the two big races, Pike's Peek in 43:38 and Cherry Blossom in 1:12:32. Fifth place Lloyd Blackwell of Warrenton, VA stays in the mix with his 10 miler in 1:13:10.

Richard Williams of Alexandria, VA continues to be the most prolific racer of the group with eight age group wins. Duane Lougee of Norfolk, VA is the new man on the block and he topped runner-up Tom Ray at the Shamrock Marathon 3:43:23 to 3:49:13. Meanwhile, Williams was beating fifth place Chris Catoe at the half marathon 1:48:06 to 1:48:21. Williams won the 8K the day before. He also ran two HMs, two 10 milers, and three 10Ks.
Ray made a comeback at Cherry Blossom finishing in 1:18:32, virtually the same as Williams' Best of 2007 22:38 at the Shamrock 5K. Williams made it even clearer, winning his division at Cherry Blossom in 1:17:53. Lougee is closing with a fast YMCA 5K in 23:05 and the fastest half of the year already.
Nobody is unbeatable; a race weary Williams could not hold off fourth place Philip Hager of Falls Church, VA at the GW Parkway 10 Mile 1:20:18 to 1:22:50.

Charles Day (75) of Sterling, VA enjoys a race in the park at the Sallie Mae 10K.
Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD was having his way with the division. Then his two regular rivals throughout the last dozen years reappeared. Larry Dickerson of Burke, VA went right to work, winning five times. George Yannakakis of Sparks, MD was even tougher, taking McMahon at the St. Patrick's Day 8K 40:22 to 43:53. McMahon came back, running Pike's Peek 10K in 53:05 to best fourth place Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, MD, who ran 54:35. Yannakakis answered the following week with a resounding 50:01 win at the Ashland 10K.
Dickerson is definitely getting back in shape racing his 5Ks in the low 27s and high 26s. Then he ran the Daisy Dash in 24:30, judged kindly as a 3-mile race. It was not quite enough to take the runner-up spot from McMahon.
At Cherry Blossom, fourth place Xie (1:32:04) led Henry Metzger of Chevy Chase, MD (1:32:49) and sixth place Keith Olson of Silver Spring, MD (1:33:20).

Paul Lackey of Arlington, VA has put his running shoes back on and taken command of the division. Though he ran four minutes slower than 2006, he won the Race for Hope 5K in 32:07 to win the division. George Brown of Glen Arm, MD was close, running the ROAR 5K in 32:32 the last week in April. Last period's champion, Wendell Golden of Charlottesville, VA, ran the longest race, finishing his hometown 10 miler in 1:57:21 for third. Harry Freestone lost to Golden at the Bright Stars, though he ran much better to win the Autism 5K earlier.
Look out for legend John Hosner, perhaps the last runner in his eighties still under 28:00 for the 5K.
