Open Men
Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 47:58, 10K = 28:52
Wilson Komen's fifth place finish at Cherry Blossom was a masterpiece but he has not been running as much around here lately. Gurmessa Kumsa moved to Oxon Hill, MD and took an instant liking to first place. He started the period with an eye opening 23:36 (10K = 29:56) to win the St Patrick's 8K. He ended the period with an overall win at the Capitol Hill 10K in 30:37. Combined with his overall win in 30:14 at the Mother's Day 10K, these three races were his worst.
His longest race, at the Shamrock HM, was the division winner for him. He was second overall in 64:27 (10K = 29:15). Good thing, too, because a couple of Kenyans and one Jacob Frey of Oakton, VA handed him his hat at the Pike's Peek 10K. Frey ran 29:38; Kumsa was fourth in 29:46. Frey cemented his runner-up spot with a 49:38 (10K = 29:52) at the Cherry Blossom. Kumsa opted for Ukrop's that weekend and ran an identical 29:52.
Demesse Tefera of Arlington, VA finished with a nice round 30:00 at Sallie Mae to earn the third spot. Kumsa ran 29:51; get used to hearing his name. Patrick MacAdie was a minute back in 31:00. Top times came in bunches as MacAdie of Washington, DC finished Cherry Blossom in 50:19 (10K = 30:16) for fourth. MacAdie was also runner-up at the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 24:32 (10K = 31:07) Tefera was second overall at the GW Parkway 10 Mile in 50:17 just three weeks later, ahead of MacAdie's 51:47. Meanwhile Frey bounded to a 30:20 overall win at the Apple Blossom 10K in May.
The fourth runner from the Oxon Hill clan is fifth place Urgessa Wayessa. He followed Kumsa home at the Mother's Day 10K in 30:28 and the Capitol Hill 10K in 30:42. Brian Godsey of Baltimore, MD is known as a top 5K runner. He sported the top 5K in the period, winning the Shamrock in 14:44 (10K = 30:44). Still, it was his 51:00 (10K = 30:41) that was right on the money at Cherry Blossom.

Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K, 30:48
Wouldn't it be nice to be young and training in Oxon Hill, MD? Haile Gelalcha of Ethiopia, now living in Oxon Hill, was 19 when he busted the Ukrop's 10K in 30:48 and he did not even win the division. Dema Weyessa of Oxon Hill, MD was third in 32:32. Gelalcha aged up and left the division for Weyessa to plunder. He had already plowed through St. Patrick's in 25:01 (10K = 31:44) and run a sub-5:00 pace at the Run for Hospice 5K in 15:30 (10K = 32:20).
Andrew Madison stopped him from taking the top five times with a nice 16:22 (10K = 34:08) at the Victim's Fund 5K in April. The next four spots were determined at the 10K. David Bernstein (34:24) led Copper Linde (34:32) and rising star Neal Darmody (34:40) at Pike's Peek. Josef Tessema of Springfield, VA interrupted the march and took the fifth position at Run vs. Row with 34:37 for the overall win. He also won the Atoms 5K outright in 16:36 (10K = 34:38). Bernstein had bragging rights at Cherry Blossom with 58:14 (10K = 35:02).
Weyessa had the highest position in the Open division of anyone from another division.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 50:45, 10K = 30:32
Last period's champion, Max Lockwood, tried the St. Patrick's 8K and did well enough with 27:25 (10K = 34:47). Then he tried the National Marathon in 2:39:42 (10K = 34:16), winning his age group. Then he popped the two big 10 milers, Cherry Blossom, 56:30, and GW Parkway, 56:29 (10K = 34:00) in a virtual tie with his division-winning 56:31 at the Al Lewis 10M from the winter. One second a race was not enough, and he fell to seventh place.
Naturally, none of the six runners ahead of him had run in the winter. In fact, Alexey Khokhlov of Germantown, MD did not come out until May. When he did it was all over. Save for Edmund Burke's solo ride at Cherry Blossom, no one else was close. Khokhlov ran the Apple Blossom 10K in 31:12. Third place Mike Colaiacovo of Baltimore, MD held off fourth place Stavros Rologas, also of Baltimore, 33:01 to 33:10 at Pike's Peek for the next best 10K time. The following week Khokhlov ran the Preakness 5K in 14:59 (10K = 31:15). Runner-up Ray Pugsley of Potomac Falls, VA ran 15:37 (10K = 32:35) to finish second overall at the GW Parkway 5K.
Alex Hetherington of Stafford, VA won the Grace Oughton 5K outright in 16:02 (10K = 33:37). Yancey Hall had the fastest 10 miler among qualifiers, besting Lockwood at the GW Parkway 10 Mile in 55:44 (10K = 33:32).
All seven of them made the Open division.

Shamrock Festival Half Marathon, 1:13:16, 10K = 33:15
Chris Chattin of Columbia, MD has always been near the top. Still, in the last year or so he has been pushed back a few too many spots. He raced a fine Shamrock 5K in 16:10 (10K = 33:43). Rodney Timpson sounded a loud wake-up call with a superb 16:00 (10K 33:23), which earned him the runner-up spot. The following weekend, Chattin went to the Shamrock HM and ran stride for stride with running pal Dave Berardi. Chattin's 1:13:15 (10K = 33:15) was his first strike on the way to the top. He skipped Cherry Blossom this year while third place Chris Hamley earned his spot in 56:07 (10K = 33:46), second place in the division. The following week Hamley went to Alexandria for the GW Parkway 10 Mile. Chattin did his part, finishing first in 55:30 (10K = 33:24) and Hamley settled for next in 56:16 (10K = 33:51).
John Piggott of Williamsburg, VA still loves the marathon. Earning a top spot with a marathon time is tough. Not for Piggott, where it is as easy as one, two, three. In mid March, he won the Lower Potomac Marathon in 2:37:55 (10K = 33:47). Crossing the Bay, he ran the Ocean City Marathon for second overall in 2:38:30 (10K = 34:01) in early April. To end the month, he finished third overall at the Frederick Marathon in 2:39:25 (10K= 34:13).
The next three spots were close. Daniel List of Midlothian, VA gets the nod over two-time Marine Corps Marathon winner Darrell General and Mark Hoon of Bethesda, MD. List's top race was the Shamrock HM in 1:15:05 (10K = 34:05) and he finished second by a step to tenth place Danny Fink at the Ukrop's "mega runner" 10K in 34:56.
The top four runners made the Open division.

Stop the Silence 5K, 15:54, 10K = 33:10
Jim Hage, with more than two decades of running at least two miles a day, every day, only ran one race during the period. The first weekend, he ran head-on into three of the top six candidates and got a rude launch off of the awards platform. Mark Malander won in 27:12 (10K = 34:30). Robert Marino was next, having caught Hage (27:55) and third place George Buckheit (27:31). He looked a little surprised at the end to notice that his work was not done. He finished second in 27:19. The next week in Virginia Beach, Malander had his worst race of the period, racing 1:17:11 (10K = 35:01) while Dave Berardi had his best. Berardi ran 1:13:09 (10K = 33:11) and that was almost enough for him to keep his crown.
The next big race was the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, Marino's favorite distance. He locked in on Malander and settled the score, besting him 55:56 (10K = 33:39) to 56:35 (10K = 34:03). It was time for Malander to make his move. At Pike's Peek he revved up with the fastest 10K in 33:07. The closest competitor was sixth place George Buckheit in 34:25. That settled Marino back into third place. The following week he settled up with Berardi (34:39) and last year's division champion Greg Cauller (33:58) by winning at Sallie Mae in 33:37.
In the meantime, Jean-Christophe Arcaz was seen lurking at St. Patrick's in 27:57, a step behind Hage and on the awards stand at Cherry Blossom in 57:45 (10K = 34:45). To top that off, just when you thought it was safe to get into the water, a new face appeared. Ron Shaiko of Arlington, VA took off in May with an overall win at the Virginia 5K in 16:40 (10K = 34:40). The following week he batted two for two at the Capitol Hill 10K/3K races. He won the 3K in 10:05 and then proceeded to test the waters with a fine 34:06 win in the 10K.
Of all these top guns, only Malander made the Open division.

Last period Mike Hart went on a rampage, winning seven races and moving up to the runner-up place. This period, Stephen Chantry knew he could not rest and blasted seven big age group wins of his own. His Shamrock 8K in 27:31 (10K = 34:54) was like money in the bank. He won the monster-sized (16,500 runners) Ukrop's 10K in 35:45. Meanwhile, Dan Lawson of Gaithersburg, MD was quietly making his move. He started the period with a close victory over Hart at the St. Patrick's Day 8K, 28:40 (10K = 36:22) to 28:52 (10K = 36:37). That did not seem too much of a threat to Chantry. A week later he ran the Super Sligo 4M in a solid, if not inspired, 23:23 (10K = 37:23). Those in the know remember that the course is really 4.1 miles with some of those rolling hills.
Now it was April and Pike's Peek offered its point-to-point magic. Lawson sliced through town in a coronation-making 34:29. The following week, Chantry dashed through the lightning-fast Queen's Lake 5K course for second overall in 16:40 (10K = 34:46), too little, too late. The next day Lawson ran Sallie Mae in 35:29.
Note that at Pike's Peek, Terry Permar set one of the four course records set this year, flashing home in 33:42. Also, Lawson was second at Sallie Mae as Tom Stevens of Middletown, MD is now fifty and ran 34:31.
Another top runner who races infrequently is back. James Pryde of Churchville, MD stepped back into the arena to bump back Maurice Pointer of Baltimore, MD. Pointer was getting really used to winning his division since turning fifty and he likes it. At the Shamrock 5K in March, Pryde goosed him by two seconds in 17:30 (10K = 36:30). At the end of April, he was there again at the ROAR 5K to win 17:48 to 17:54. In May, Pointer lit out on his own to finish second overall at the Ashland 10K in 36:32.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 37:24
The window of opportunity for the crown is so small. A few seconds here, another couple of months and some younger runner moves into the division. Tim Morgan of Damascus, MD just missed last period. This time he handled last period's champion, Mick Slonaker of Columbia, MD, at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 63:16 (38:04) to 64:01 (10K = 38:31). So Slonaker sank to sixth place. In May, Rick Platt of Williamsburg set the fastest time in the 8K at the Buckroe Beach Dash in 31:06. At the Germantown 5-Miler, Morgan ignored his age group trophy, telling everyone his goal was to break 31:00 and replace Platt's name in the Best of 2006 Records posted weekly on the Washington Running Report Web site (Results page). His 30:57 (10K = 39:02) did just that. At the Pike's Peek 10K, he sent the former 45-49 record holder (32:37 in 1996), Hall of Famer Steve Ruckert, down in flames and back to fourth place in the race. Unfortunately for him, Richard Adams of Herndon, VA had aged up and took the race (and the division) from him, 37:24 to 37:32. Adams had started his 55-59 journey with a 38:52 at the Run vs. Row 10K in March.
Gerard Cabrol's GW Parkway 10 mile time of 69:40 (10K = 41:55) did not even crack the top 50 times. No matter, he surprised the division with a swift marathon for the third fastest time in the division. Top ranked times are rare in the marathon, so is a 2:55:37 (10K = 37:41) at the Shamrock Festival. Fourth place Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD was fourth place at Cherry Blossom in 64:49 (10K = 39:00) but he earned his spot with his edging Ruckert on the Pike by a second in 37:58.

Fairfax Corner 5K 17:51 - 10K = 37:14
So many runners to beat (46), and so little time. Five different distances in seven races for Patrick Griffith of Alexandria, VA and the outcome was all the same. He had seven of the eight best times. Those five distances produced the fastest times for the year. Last year Jason Page of Hamilton, VA had the division's best 5K in 18:10. This year he dropped it to 18:04 (10K = 37:41) at Fairfax Corner but Griffith did him one better with 17:51. Third place Ed Lecates of York, PA had the next best 5K at the Shamrock 5K in 19:06 (10K = 39:51). Griffith ran Pike's Peek in 37:39. Page had the next best 10K, running Apple Blossom in 40:06. Lecates ran the hills of Columbia at Clyde's for the next best time in 40:43. Griffith dominated at Cherry Blossom, winning in 62:40 (10K = 37:42). Fourth place Piriya Pinit of Catonsville, MD was next in 67:54 (10K = 40:51). In May, Griffith's Potomac River HM in 86:36 (10K = 39:18) was two miles ahead of the next best time of the period.
Fifth spot Ben Dyer of Petersburg, VA rode the White Bank 5M to a 32:37 (10K = 41:08) conclusion. He also took the top spot at Sallie Mae in 41:18.

As expected, the battle for the top spot just heated up. John Elliott of Columbia, MD had three of the top for times as wins, Pike's Peek in 41:53, Sallie Mae in 42:25, and St. Patrick's 8K in 33:25 (10K = 42:23). Still, these courses are as flat as a pancake except for maybe Pike's Peek, which invests most of its 195-foot drop in the final quarter-mile. Jack Pitarra marched home at the Port to Fort 6K in 25:17 (10K = 43:22) with his Whitehall 15K in 65:18 (10K = 42:19) garnering him the runner- up spot. Williams might have had a shot at number three but his Shamrock HM in 1:36:00 (10K = 43:33) was his only race.
It was not only Robert Wright that wanted the next place. Cal Fowler of Keswick, VA had designs on it too. They both had matching 8Ks in 34:42, Fowler won Martha Jefferson and Wright topped at the Buckroe Beach Dash. Wright's 20:49 (10K = 43:25) at the Riverside by the Bay 5K clinched it. Fowler ran the Charlottesville 10 Mile in 74:18 (10K = 44:42) to hold off fifth place Steve Forman of McLean, VA. Forman ran the Virginia 5K in 21:38 (10K = 45:08) and a couple other solid races, such as Cherry Blossom in 1:16:10 (10K = 45:50), to hold his place over sixth place Sonny Barber. Barber had edged Forman early in the period at the St. Patrick's Day 8K, 36:15 to 36:22. Barber's best race was the Scope It Out 5K in 21:54 (10K = 45:41).

Run with Grace 5K, 21:15, 10K = 44:20
At times, we include runners from just outside the region, especially those such as Tom Ray of Kitty Hawk, NC who has for years run scores of races in the area. D.T. Jeter of Bristol, TN is a border jumper who came across four times, including recording the fastest time of the period. For now, he is out of the area. Skip Grant of Silver Spring, MD is not. His course record 45:21 at Pike's Peek makes it hard on the regular top two, Ray and Jerry Lewis of Reston, VA, and newbie Richard Williams of Alexandria, VA. Grant had two top 5Ks, including the Race for Hope in 22:20 (10K = 46:35). His St. Patrick's Day 8K defines the division, besting Williams, Lewis, and then McCarthy in that order with a 37:11 (10K = 47:10) Only Ray kept it close, winning the Ford's Colony 8K in 37:12.
This year at the Shamrock Festival in Virginia Beach, officials made it a two-day affair and added a half marathon. Eager to race, Richard Williams ran the 8K on Saturday, winning in 39:58. In the half marathon the next day, the wheels fell off. He may never have caught Ray's 1:44:58 (10K = 47:38), though he did earn the third spot in the division with his Scope It Out 5K in 22:54 (10K = 47:46). Still, a relieved Jerry Lewis told him that the two-race weekend may have cost him in the half marathon. Lewis outlasted him 1:46:57 (10K = 48:32) to 1:48:14 (10K = 49:06). Fifth place Chris Catoe of Virginia Beach, VA was next in 1:49:16 (10K = 49:35).

Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD steamrolled through the division, with the top six times, five of them wins. He did not venture past the 10K, where Bill Law's top time at Cherry Pit was supreme. At Pike's Peek, he busted open the division over runner-up Nianxiang Xie, 50:59 to 56:22. McMahon touched all the bases, winning at MCRRC's Piece of Cake 10K and popping a 26:26 at PVTC Easter Classic 5K. He works tirelessly at their races as a race official. Sallie Mae and St. Patrick's Day 8K were also fodder for this racing machine.
Third place George Waxter of Frederick, MD finished behind the top two at Pike's Peek, racing 60:29. His Mission of Mercy 5K in 28:14 (10K = 58:54) was his top time. He finished third behind Xie's Cherry Blossom time of 1:34:17 (10K = 56:44) with 1:45:27 (10K = 63:27).

This age group, more than any other, seems to have trouble keeping the same champion. Injuries have knocked Walt Washburn out of the running. Many of the others have stopped competing. Do not tell that to Cokey Daman (87) of Virginia Beach, VA who has already run two races for the new ranking period. Perhaps he heard that Henryk Bukowski has just run a pending Virginia State 10K record of 1:12:04.
Wendell Golden of Charlottesville, VA threw his chips into the pot the first day of the ranking period, racing the Martha Jefferson 8K in 53:50 (10K = 1:08:17). The very next day this period's champion, Paul Lackey of Arlington, VA, hurled back an astounding St. Patrick's Day 8K in 48:54 (10K = 1:02:02). Things got worse in May for would-be challengers as Lackey added two fast 5Ks, Race for Hope in 28:30 (10K 59:27) and Atoms 5K in 28:38 (10K = 59:44)
Capital Running Company staffer and former division champion Ray Blue tells us to look out for a new champion in the fall. He tells us that Paul Lackey will be going hunting and giving his running shoes a rest.
