Open Men
Under Armour Baltimore Marathon, 2:17:05, 10K = 29:25
This was by far the toughest division to rank. Gurmesa Kumsa of Oxon Hill, MD is the two-time defending champion. He did everything you could ask. He was the overall winner in seven of his eight races. In the only race he did not win outright, his 66:02 (10K = 29:58) bested third place Will Christian's 66:29 (10K = 30:10). On a wet, windy, and cold November 12th, he topped fourth place Steve Meinelt of Washington, DC 30:14 to 30:35, finishing eight seconds off the course record. Indeed, third place at the race belonged to Wilson Komen of Washington, DC in 30:59 as well as topping Mohammed Awol-4th in 31:14, Will Christian-5th in 31:25, Alexey Khokhlov-6th in 31:32, Maru Dava- 7th in 31:44 as well as nine other elite runners at that race.
This is all leading up to handing the crown to Wilson Komen for his third place overall at the Baltimore Marathon. His time of 2:17:05 (10K = 29:25) separated him from the field. Christian backs his claim to third with his Hampton Bay Days 10K in 30:30 for second overall as well as his 24:12 (10K = 30:42) at the nTelos 8K. Meinelt backs his claim to fourth with his 14:40 (10K = 30:36), which was a surprising 4th overall at the PVI Runfest 5K. Kumsa still had the fastest 5K at the Cardinal Run in 14:37 (10K = 30:29).
More controversy as Matt Barresi of Ashton, MD is placed at fifth. This, although he finished a distant fourth (25:11; 10K = 31:57) at the Abebe Bikila Day 8K behind Dava's 24:50 (10K = 31:30) for 11th place, Awol's 24:51 (10K = 31:31) for ninth place, and sixth place Nick Gramsky's 24:54 (10K = 31:35). Barresi won the GAR 15K in 45:44 (10K = 29:38) over Gramsky's third place spot 46:26 (10K = 30:06).
Note: Jaron Hawkins of Frostburg, MD was the runner-up at Great Allegany 15K (not Gramsky as seen in print) in 45:55 (10K = 29:45). Hawkins only had one race this period.
Stephen Crane of Alexandria, VA wins seventh place simply by breaking the tape at the Home Run 10K in 30:43. Dave Berdan of Baltimore, MD is eighth with his age group win at the Baltimore HM in 68:02 (10K = 30:52).
The next six places (12-17) are not any easier. Andrii Toptum of Germantown, MD ran the SunTrust Richmond Marathon in 2:27:37 (10K = 31:41) for runner-up, matching William Tarantino of Gloucester Point, VA and his nTelos 8K in 24:58 (10K = 31:40). Jason Dwyer of Bethesda, MD coasted in second at the Home Run 10K in 31:42 just ahead of Vladim Bukalo's 31:47. Ryan Deak matches exactly Toptum's second race with one of his three wins, the Run with Eagles 5K in 15:16 (10K = 31:51). John Sillery of Baltimore, MD bids best with a 2:28:38 (10K = 31:54) Baltimore Marathon.

19 & Under Men
Cox Communications Star City 5K, 15:36, 10K = 32:32
The young men's division shrunk even more than the teen women, from 77 to 33. Zac Edwards (19) of Roanoke, VA has all the stuff for the elite division. As with the women's division, the top dog won all three of the races with the fastest times, getting better with time. Edwards started with Vinton 5K in 15:54 (10K = 33:10). The following week he pushed his 5-mile time at the Johnny Casa race to 26:07 (10K = 32:56). He ended the period with a Star City 5K in 15:36 (10K = 32:32).
14-year-old Brandt Silver-Korn of Bethesda, MD sparkled at the Home Run 5K in 16:23 (10K = 34:11) for the runner-up spot. The next six spots are a jumble of young men springing forward to faster and faster times. Geophery Mills of Chesapeake, VA gets the nod with his 1:17:37 Fleet Feet HM (10K = 35:13) preceded by a week with his Hilton 5K in 16:56 (10K 35:19). David Bernstein of Chevy Chase, MD slips into fourth with his 35:13 win at the Rockville 10K coupled with a Veterans Day 10K in 35:16. Fifth place Neal Darmody of Gaithersburg, MD was the overall winner in the less than flat Page's Run 5K in 16:53 (10K = 35:13). He was eighth at the Battle of the Potomac 5K in 16:57 (10K = 35:21).
Philip Mlinarcik had a top 16:50 (10K = 35:07) race at the Knights of Columbus 5K, backed by a lesser 18th place at the Battle of Potomac 5K in 17:22 (10K = 36:22). Alex Loper of Fallston, MD ran the Harford 5K in 16:55 (10K = 35:17).

Army 10 Miler, 50:20, 10K = 30:17
Great Allegany 15K, 46:44, 10K = 30:17
A lot of fast yet, unknown runners have listed local addresses; even Rueben Garcia of the Mexican Army had a hometown listed as Washington, DC. Many only had one race. The top division time was matched by two solo efforts. Edmund Burke of Burtonsville, MD went west to enjoy the GAR 15K in 46:44 (10K = 30:17), then rested. Sandu Rebenciuc of Alexandria, VA debuted at Army with a 50:20.
This tiny division shrunk up even with "Mad" Max Lockwood of Washington, DC seemingly running every race. He plastered the scene in September with five age group wins in three weeks. The pace slowed from his opening salvo at the Arlington 9-11 5K in 16:28 (10K = 34:21) with back-to-back races to 16:34 (10K = 34:33) at the Labrecque Classic and then the speedster found fatigue at the Parks HM in 78:01 (10K = 35:24). After resting a week, he dove back in at the hilly Back to School 8K where he met up with one-race-a-week Michael Colaiacovo of Baltimore, MD. Colaiacovo ran 16:23 at the Police Pace 5K in 16:23 (10K = 34:11). By the time he met Lockwood at Back to School he was rebounding to a fine 27:22 (10K = 34:43). Lockwood was fading to 28:05 (10K = 35:37), albeit third overall. Then Lockwood gave his exuberance to the Marine Corps Marathon, running 2:42:00 (10K = 34:46). Colaiacovo takes third to Lockwood's fourth.
Liam Collins of Alexandria, VA raced an excellent 53:52 (10K = 32:25) Army Ten Miler behind Burke's age group win. While Burke did not race again, Collins mounted the charge at the largest race in the period, the Marine Corps Marathon. His 2:37:55 (10K = 33:53) made him the favorite heading into November.
Andres Wright (39) of Frederick, MD is making his pre-masters kick. He busted a fine Rockville 5K overall win in 16:19 (10K = 34:02) to start October. Thinking he was Rockville's King of the Road, he met some tough competition, settling for fourth overall in 15: 56 (10K = 33:14). Division champion Alexey Khokhlov of Germantown, MD objected and raced second overall in 15:12 (10K = 31:42) to go with his Veterans Day 10K in 31:32 the week before. Last year at Pike's Peek 10K he had run 29:26 just two seconds from victory.
Rob Magin of Olney, MD had a fast Baltimore Marathon in 2:41:21 (10K = 34:37) for fifth place. Sixth place Mark Gilmore of Columbia, MD had a swift CAASA 5K in 16:29 (10K = 34:23) but struggled at the Baltimore Marathon, finishing well back of Magin with 2:48:47 (10K = 36:13).

Great Allegany Run 15K, 49:28, 10K = 32:04
Second place Dennis Mickey of Ridgeley, WV had the fastest time at the thundering downhill Great Allegany 15K with his 49:28 finish (10K = 32:04). John Piggott of Williamsburg, VA retains his crown because of his marathon prowess. He won the Baltimore Marathon in 2:34:17 (10K = 33:06) over third place Chris Chattin of Columbia, MD 2:38:46 (10K = 34:04) and fourth place Steve Kartalia of Westminster, MD 2:40:10 (10K = 34:22). Dennis Mickey's marathon was Richmond in 2:48:08 (10K = 36:05). Piggott answered the opening bell of the period at the Hampton 10K in 33:59. In case you think he is all long distance, he battled Carl Clark of New Market, MD at the Market Street Mile while Mickey raced GAR, succumbing 4:42 to 4:43.
Piggott narrowly dispatched another long distance man, Mark Hoon of Kensington, MD at the Parks HM, 75:43 (10K = 34:21) to 75:48 (10K = 34:24). Hoon takes fifth by matching his second race, a 16:31 5K (10K = 34:27) at Candy Cane to Rodney Timpson's United Way 5K. Timpson, from Baltimore, MD, also ran Susie's Cause 5K in 16:59 (10K = 35:26). David Haaga's last shot was a split division race at the Rockville 10K in 34:25, just after turning 45. One leaves, one comes aboard. Seventh place rookie of the division Steve Peterson of Fairfax Station, VA ran a training run National Capital 20 Mile to second overall in 2:09:15 (10K = 37:15). Then six days later, he drives south for the Quantico HM in 76:10 (10K = 34:34).
Ted Poulos of McLean, VA notched eleven more age group wins, including an overall win at the Vienna Turkey Trot 5K in 17:10 (10K = 35:49). Next time you see him, he will be haunting the 45-49 division looking for another win.

Army 10 Miler, 55:46, 10K = 33:33
Dave Berardi of Catonsville, MD threw out an opening bid at the Hampton 10K in 34:03. Last period's champion, Greg Cauller of York, PA, was nowhere to be found. Jim Hage is out on the roads everyday like clockwork but not racing. David Haaga of Rockville, MD got bold and snapped up a victory at the Parks HM in 76:48 (10K = 34:51) to match up with Berardi's PVI 5K in 16:43 (10K = 34:52). Robert Johnson (49) of Woodbridge, VA snapped some heads to attention with an eye-popping 74:10 (10K = 33:39) at the Quantico HM to end September. This next day Mark Malander of Oak Hill, VA held off Haaga in a photo finish Rockville 10K, both in 34:25.
Then next week was Army. Malander made good on his crown aspirations, pulling away to win in 55:46 (10K = 33:33) just ahead of Johnson's HM. Johnson's legs were drained enough that he settled for a 57:49 (10K = 34:47) and the runner-up spot in the rankings. Berardi took on the Baltimore HM the next week winning in 75:54 (10K = 34:26) to shore up his third placement.
Haaga had enough to stick fourth place and went after the Marine Corps Marathon, running 2:48:09 (10K = 36:05). Jean Christophe-Arcaz of Rockville, MD ran Army in 58:15 (10K = 35:03) and won the Home Run 10K in 34:48. That, and a surprise win at the Veterans Day drencher in 35:46 over Berardi and his 35:55, pushes Arcaz past sixth place Brian Daugherty. Daugherty ended the period with a splashy Kiwanis 5K in 16:31 (10K = 34:31) to make it close. His next best race was a late October 17:33 5K (10K = 36:30).
Cauller came back with two fast 5Ks to settle just behind Keith Winn (49) of Midlothian, VA who was the masters champion at the Richmond Marathon in 2:43:15 (10K = 35:02) just a month after winning the Stonewall Jackson 20 Mile overall in 2:04:24 (10K = 35:45).

Governor's Landing 5K, 16:55, 10K = 35:17
So far this year, this division has had three champions. Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA expects to win every race he runs and welcomes a challenge. Last year he dethroned Chuck Moeser. This year he has spent a lot of time racing shorter distances including making the Best of 2006 at the 800M and 3K on the slippery, slow TJ indoor gym floor.
The period opened with long distance man Steve Ward of Reston, VA racing the Arlington 9-11 5K in 17:37 (10K = 36:45). Last period's champion, Maurice Pointer of Baltimore, MD, responded meekly with a second overall at the Executive Stampede in 17:40 (10K = 36:51). Dan Lawson moved quickly with a PVI 5K in 17:13 (10K = 35:55). Chantry's first effort was the Riverside 8 Mile in 49:05 (10K = 37:33).
Ward ended September with a Parks HM in 1:21:28 (10K = 36:55) for the fastest such race for the period, knocking off three top runners, including sixth place David Andrews of Bethesda, MD and seventh place Norton Compton of Fairfax, VA. That dropped him into the fifth spot.
Then, as September ended, Chantry served up a 17:08 (10K = 35:44) and someone was going to have to take the crown from him. Lawson had a fine 17:14 (10K = 35:57) to add to his collection at the Candy Cane 5K. He added a couple of very respectable 5Ks and his 36:03 at the Veterans Day was a wonderful effort in difficult weather, leaving him in second place.
The day before, Chantry met with Pointer at the nTelos 8K and hand rode to victory in 27:58 (10K = 35:29) to 28:36 (10K = 36:17). Leaving nothing to chance, he blew off the line at the season-ending Governor's Land 5K, leaving all the men in the dust, including Rob Hinkle who had run the race in 15:55 two years ago. His time of 16:55 (10K = 35:17) replaced Tommy Stevens' Hagerstown 5K in 16:57 as the top race of the period. Now Chantry has his second crown and 2006 belongs to him.
Peter Darmody of Gaithersburg, MD leapfrogged from a possible tenth spot to fourth with a fancy King of the Road 5K in 17:22 (10K = 36:14) the last weekend, nearly upending Pointer on his way toward the top.

Army 10 Miler, 61:44,10K = 37:09
Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA was always in the mix but fifth seemed not so good. He started the period with a feeler 39:20 masters win at the Hampton 10K. He scattered some 5K wins among his eight wins, ending September with a Best of 2006 Mulberry Island HM in 1:24:18 (10K = 38:15). While he rested the next week, Bill Taylor of Woodbridge, VA took on the Army 10 Miler. He was listed as second by ChampionChip time but his actual time of 61:44 (10K = 37:09) was the Best of 2006 time. The next week Platt was rested and clocked a superb 18:02 (10K = 37:37) at the Humane Society 5K. Veterans Day weekend he mastered the nTelos 8K in 31:03 (10K = 39:23). Taylor secured the division the next day at the Veterans Day 10K in 39:03. Platt had another shot the last day, running Governor's Land 5K in 18:14 (10K = 38:02). This is perhaps the best series of races to fall just short of the title.
Larry Washington of Rockville, MD really worked hard for third place. In a razor thin separation, Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD ran the fast downtown course for the Labrecque 5K in 18:22 (10K = 38:19). Washington was second overall on the less friendly Terrapin Trot 5K course in 18:23 (10K = 38:21). Wright's other race was the Parks HM in 1:26:27 (10K = 39:13). Washington added the rolling Page's Run 5K in 18:57 (10K = 39:32) to his combined five age group wins.
Last period's champion Mick Slonaker does well at 10 miles. His 63:55 (10K = 38:27) at Army is no exception. Richard Adams is next as the first runner in his five-year age group at the Kingstowne Faith 5K in 18:48 (10K = 39:13). This course is a real challenge to rockets that flame out. The first 2K is all screaming downhill but what goes down must come up. By comparison, the Candy Cane 5K is heavenly flat. Tim Morgan of Damascus, MD happily raced it in 18:50 (10K = 39:17).

Remington 5K Turkey Trot, 18:18, 10K = 38:10
Patrick Griffith of Alexandria, VA was sick with pneumonia for much of the period. So he rested. Get real! He just held back from the 14 age group wins last period to eight this period. Still, of the top ten times he had a mere six. Jason Page of Hamilton, VA leaped out in the lead with an 18:58 (10K = 39:34) at the Great Frederick Fair 5K. All the way to Halloween, Page's lead held as he copped two more fast 5Ks. He had run 19:11 at Stone Ridge on the 28th while Griffith was seemingly mortal, and won the Goblin Gallop in 19:34.
Griffith moved strongly into November with a Jug Bay 10K in 39:20. Two weeks later, Page answered with the Berryville Turkey Trot 4 Mile in 24:37 (10K = 39:22) and gleefully claimed a Best of 2006 distance for himself. The period was one day from ending and he was still in the driver's seat. The next day the Kryptonite disposal crew finished and Griffith was back. He wrested his division back with a punishing 18:18 (10K = 38:10) Remington Turkey Trot 5K.
Back in third place, Bill Joyce of Herndon, VA had nudged John Kirkpatrick of Annapolis, MD a second, winning Army in 68:05 (10K = 40:58). Kirkpatrick had run the Metric Marathon in 1:53:54 (10K = 40:59). The course of 16.3 miles is surprisingly fast for the first ten miles but, oh, those scenic hills for the last 45 minutes. Joyce's second effort was a third place age group at the Marine Corps Marathon in 3:24:53 (10K = 43:58) just ahead of a resurging Leo Villano of Silver Spring, MD, 3:24:59. Kirkpatrick could not stop until he went Cold Turkey and at that 10K he ran 40:56 to snatch third place.
Both the winners of Marine Corps and Baltimore could have earned a high spot with a second race. Fifth place Ritchie Geisel improved 1:01 at the period ending Governor's Land 5K in 19:46 (10K = 41:14), eking out a nod over Ben Dyer of Petersburg, VA. Dyer was second at the nTelos 8K in 32:32 (10K = 41:16). Oft times nemesis of Griffith, Dan Murray was first in 31:53 (10K = 40:27).

Maryland Senior Olympics 5K, 20:05, 10K = 41:54
John Elliott of Columbia, MD uses the Best of 2006 records as a race motivator. Though he owns six of the distances, he only set two this period: the Maryland Senior Olympics 5K in 20:05 (41:54) and a second overall at the tiny Mayberry 4 Mile rollercoaster in 27:41 (10K = 44:16). Then he frosted the October cake with a 42:03 10K.
Collin Winston of Newport News, VA had set the earlier standard for the 10K at the Hampton 10K in 42:53. With plenty of fizz, Cal Fowler of Keswick, VA ran the Pepsi 10K that same early September morning in 42:03. Warren Prunella of Rockville, MD prepped for his prestigious win at the Marine Corps Marathon with a win at the Candy Cane 5K in 20:54 (10K = 43:36). Omnipresent Lou Shapiro earned a division tops in wins with seven, which would have been eight, save for those pesky 10- year age groups at some races.
Winston held off Prunella with a Mulberry Island HM in 1:35:51 (10K = 43:29). Fowler made his move at the nTelos 8K in 33:27 (10K = 42:26) for the runner-up spot. The next day Shapiro moved up to third with another 5K, the Vienna Turkey Trot, in 20:25 (10K = 42:35).

Army 10 Miler, 78:34, 10K = 47:16
Tom Ray of Kitty Hawk, NC came north mid-period to settle things for the division. He was having some troubles putting away fourth place Chris Catoe of Virginia Beach, VA. The period started with Catoe upsetting him by ninety seconds at the Hampton Bay Days 10K in 50:37. Two weeks later Ray returned the favor, winning the Riverside Harvest Festival 8 Mile by more than two minutes in 65:31 (10K = 50:08). At Army, Ray held off a tenacious Richard Williams of Alexandria, VA 78:34 (10K = 47:16) to 80:02 (10K = 48:09).
Williams added five age group wins and was thinking ahead and not about what was coming up from behind. At the Goblin Gallop 5K at the end of October, Maynard Weyers slipped by him for one of his five age group wins, 23:11 (10K = 48:22) to 24:02 (10K= 50:08) to earn the runner-up spot. Weyers also ran the PACE Race 5K in 23:08 (10K = 48:15) to cement the spot.
Ray had another couple of sub 24:00 5Ks but the prolific racer tired at the end of the period and got caught by Catoe (82:13, 10K = 49:28) and fifth place John Essery (83:11, 10K = 50:03) at the Yorktown 10 Mile. Waiting in the wings, Jerry Lewis ran the Army 10 Miler in that identical time. The tie was broken when Lewis went for the Marine Corps Marathon in 4:19:40 (10K = 55:43). Essery ran a ranking friendly Governor's Land 5K in 24:45 (10K = 51:38).

Veterans Day 10K, 52:06
George Yannakakis of Baltimore, MD made a trip south to win the Veteran's Day 10K but that was all he had this period. Jack McMahon retains his crown. He was solidly in the lead at three distances. First, the Fair Lakes 8K in 42:44 (10K = 54:12). Then to polish the crown he dropped one more second, winning the Rockville 10K in 54:11. At the Co-op 5K, he ran 26:25 (10K = 55:06).
With three age group wins, George Waxter of Frederick edges Keith Olson of Silver Spring, MD. Olson's best effort was the National Press Club 5K in 27:09 (10K = 56:38). Waxter won the Run for Life 5K in 27:12.

Galax Autumn Days 5K Run 26:21 - 10K = 54:58
John Hosner's Galax 5K shows he still has the stuff but he needs to race a second time. Wendell Golden of Annandale, VA caps the division the first week at the Pepsi 10K in 67:57. George Coombs of Virginia Beach, VA edges Robbie Cone of Berryville, VA for second with his 46:30 (10K = 1:37:00) at the All American Beach Ford 5K. Cone continues his legend, racing the Greasy Gooney 10K. This race goes straight up steeper and steeper to the summit at 5K and then runners go into free fall to the finish.
