In compiling the Runner Rankings, we try not to be too arbitrary or subjective. The more data that is available, the better the rankings can be determined accurately. If a complete consensus is ever reached, however, it will mean runners have ceased to care (and we know you care). Competitors always believe their next race will prove them the best.
The September-October issue of the Washington Running Report traditionally does not have a Runner Rankings column, as we are still in the middle of the Summer ranking period when the issue is prepared (it ends on Labor Day, September 5).
Because we like to play with numbers and statistics, the new Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) has been developed to serve as a check on the ranking process and to provide a status report on this ranking period. This new ranking system is not meant to supplant the old system. It will enhance and refine. It will give runners another look at the ranking process and help make the system more objective.
Just as with the quarterback rating in the NFL, the MRF will be loosely based on 110 points (165 with major races), with the premium coming from runners beaten either in the open category or in the age divisions. Runners earn points on their best races in a period based on the qualifiers below. A runner who wins five races of five different distances would earn a perfect score of one hundred points.

--Additional points can be earned by prevailing over your competition in the same races or by qualifying in more than five races (especially major races).
-- Overall winners will be presumed as the 1st in the age group as well. Runners younger than 20 and older than 34 can earn overall winner points.
-- Age groups will be determined by the races' scoring system (not necessarily five year age groups). Runners who are in the overall award category of larger races will be presumed age group winners as well. (Allowing for multiple 1sts in the age group.) For instance, at the Twilight 8K, the top three masters in that special category are all age group winners as well as the winners in each of the individual age groups.
-- The same applies for 2nd and 3rd in the age groups.
-- The runners with the fastest times in individual distances will be awarded 3 points for each distance from 3M to marathon in that period. Ties give multiple runners points.
-- Each time a runner qualifies with a race, he or she will get 1 point. It is possible to run more than five races in a period for additional points.
-- Major races are defined as a race with more than 500 finishers or where more than 20% of the runners in that race qualify for the rankins.
-- Major races score higher points.
-- Each time a runner prevails over a runner with a ranked time in their division, he or she will receive 1 point. The point applies even if the runners beaten do not have a second qualifying race to make the rankings.
As of August 1, we have results from 115 races and more than 2,000 ranked runner times for the summer ranking period. Twenty- one races, covering the first nine weeks of the ranking period, have been designated major races, at least one each week. Four made it in with more than 20% ranked times.

The rationale for points is based on the five best races. Head-to-head is, of course, the best determiner, followed closely by fastest times. In viewing the results below, you may note that runners with many races have more points than seemingly faster competitors. Naturally, if all runners ran the same number of races, it would easier to see the point values more clearly. As the Runner Rankings only require two races from each runner, the MRF is merely a helpful tool in the assessment. The third and fourth factors in rankings are the number of fellow runners beaten and the quality (size) of the race, respectively. These go hand-in-hand and help modify the point values of runners that race many times against a small field.
For this first look, the open division includes all the runners with three or more races plus the top ranked runners from other divisions that made the open division in the spring. For the age groups, the top five (and selected top runners with three or more races) from the last ranking period (Spring '05) will be evaluated with MRF using just these first races. Runners are encouraged to score themselves using the MRF. Please send your feedback to results@runwashington.com.

Open Men
The top runners benefit greatly from quantity of races. Still, Philippe Rolly's five overall wins and six major races is an impressive feat. Wilson Komen, the top ranked runner from the spring, is holding his own with just three races.
Open Women
The top three runners have run a slew of races. Tatyana Chulakh still dominates with three major race wins. Bailey continues to move up the ladder with four fine efforts at major races.
19 & Under Men
This division is always one of the largest. However, there are few repeat performers. Some just age up. Just 17, look for Drew Abernethy to be at or near the top.
19 & Under Women
Only 15, Aurora Scott is really already an open runner full time. She won the Elizabeth River 6 Mile outright.
35-39 Men
With three age group wins at major races, Max Lockwood has a big edge over his peers.
35-39 Women
Prolific racer Denise Knickman is taking another run at last period's champion, Alisa Harvey. Already Knickman has seven age group wins in eight races. At Twilight, Harvey moved her back a place.
40-44 Men
With more than 1000 career victories in 3000 plus races, it is no surprise that Ted Poulos has at least twice as many races as any other competitor. Remember, the even playing field is the best five races for each runner.
40-44 Women
This is a competitive group of racers. Maureen Hall dominates in the west. Robyn Humphrey dominates in the north. Jill Hargis dominates in the east. In the south, Eileen Jacobs is making inroads on stranglehold of Megan Burns.
45-49 Men
With a first and second place overall at major races, Greg Cauller is offering Jim Hage some serious competition. Brian Daugherty, a sleeper for the past few years, is back in action.
45-49 Women
Lee DiPietro is back. It is too late to hide. In four of her five races she was in the top three overall, including an overall win. Robin Goodwin is having a field day with nine races (five major).
50-54 Men
Stephen Chantry is getting real comfortable with the top spot. The Morgan boys are still duking it out for the top spot in the family. Tim turns fifty-five in October and will be let loose on the new age group.
50-54 Women
Betty Blank is not letting any moss grow on her. She wants her crown back. Notice three women over 50 have an overall win.
55-59 Men
Ron Wong runs more than 50 races a year, which usually includes about ten marathons. For now, he is one point ahead of Jim Wright who he met for the first time at the Twilight 8K. When Wong passed top runner Mick Slonaker at that race he thought he had won. Wright was still ahead by two seconds as they crossed the ChampionChip mats.
55-59 Women
Alice Franks looks golden with eight wins in six major races and three of the fastest distances raced.
60-64 Men
John Haubert has done some serious racing this period. Still, with four of the fastest times, Patrick Griffith looks untouchable.
60-64 Women
Betty King is getting faster. She has the top five times in the division. Her other two races are in the top ten. The fitting of the crown should be underway soon.
65-69 Men
Somehow Stephen Forman got left out of the Runner Rankings last period. He did not get mad. He moved to the next division and staked out a claim for the title. His overall win at the age- graded DCRRC 4 Miler should help do the trick.
65-69 Women
Tami Graf just turned 69. She still has a firm grip on the division. Her challengers better get a move on. Next year she takes over the 70-74 division.
70-74 Men
This division is still up for grabs. Tom Ray is the favorite without Jerry Lewis's presence.
70-74 Women
Pat Ewell seems to be the pace setter with Harriet Locke the dark horse.
75-79 Men
Philip Zenchoff is serious about stealing this opportunity to be crowned champion. One more month of racing left for his challengers.
75-79 Women
Martha Trimmer is a regular racer all year long.
80-84 Men
Walt Washburn has been the rubber-stamped champion for more than two years. This is the third year that Washburn will be a winner in nine or more different races.
80-84 Women
None with two races yet.
