Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Men Winter 2009
Open Men
Anheuser Busch Colonial Half-Marathon, 1:06:24, 10K = 30:08
Ryan Carroll (26) of Portsmouth, VA is always a safe bet for an overall win. In the last 15 months, he has won 70% of his races. A neat 14:55 at the Gold’s Gym 5K earns him fifth in the Elite Division.
This was an unusual period as the top runner of 2008 and former period champions faded into obscurity. Stephen Crane bolted near the top with his second place finish at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 24:28. Winner Abiyot Abebe raced only once. Mouchine Outaleb had the top qualifier the same day, winning the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 14:39. Next, Crane finished second at the Fairfax 4 Mile in 19:30. Robert Wade won there in 19:25, but his 17:03 overall win at the Red Ribbon 5K was not fast enough to qualify.
Bert Rodriguez busted out to an excellent 31:13 at the Jingle All the Way 10K as he continues to improve. Then in February, Demesse Tefera led all runners to the finish at the GW Birthday 10K in 31:32. The course was just long enough to make his race equal to a 30:51. He finished ahead of Outaleb's 32:00 (31:19) and third place Rodriguez's 32:13 (31:31). Crane earns the third spot in the rankings to Rodriguez in fourth, followed closely by Ryan Carroll of Portsmouth who had two big overall wins. Carroll started big time with Gold's Gym 5K in 14:55 and followed it up with the Virginia is For Lovers 14K (10K = 32:12).
A week after Tefera's 10K win he traveled south to Williamsburg to finish third overall in the Colonial HM in 1:08:32. For kicks, he added an overall win the following week at the Tim Kennard 5K in a relatively pedestrian 5K. This may have been the kicker. He earns the Winter Rankings title with a MRF of 79 versus Outaleb's 75.
Sixth (Aaron Church) in the race at 32:41 (31:59) and seventh place go to Steve Mance in part for their GW Birthday appearances. Mance added to his 32:23 (31:41) with a fine Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 25:02. Church provided enough gusto to overcome a close finish there. He had a faster time finishing the Jingle All the Way 10K in 31:36, finished second at a major 5K in November, had two third place finishes in major races in December and set the course record at the REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K in 32:49.
The next seven spots had runners finishing with a time between 31:45 and 31:59 for a 10K equivalent. Guy Alton of Richmond, VA (MRF 39) takes eighth with his victory at the Frostbite 15K in 49:00. Jaron Hawkins of Frostburg, MD (MRF 34) is next with his two overall victories. The best was his Tim Kennard 10 Mile in 52:53. Jake Klim slips into tenth place with a solid fifth place finish at the Jingle All the Way 10K in 31:46, just ahead of 11th place Ray Pugsley's 31:54.

USA Cross Country Championships 8K, 24:55, 10K = 31:36
Eric Hoepker of Haymarket, VA did his damage quickly during the Thanksgiving holiday break. First, he topped everyone in the 5K with an overall win in 16:04 at the DVCC Turkey Trot 5K. Five days later he had the 14th fastest race. That just shows how varied the times are with younger runners as well as the depth. Runner-up Vernon Cody (15) of Millersville, MD finished his New Year's Day 5K in 17:29. In February, he improved to a splashy 16:16 for second overall at the hometown Valentine's Day 5K.
Third place Andrew Budiansky was the closet teen to making the Open division as he surely will next year when he turns 20. He started the year with a 34:37 fourth overall at the REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K, just missing Dustin Sweeney's course record for teens at 34:29. This mostly cross-country course nearly always runs slower than a regular road race. Then in February, he returned home to Williamsburg to finish ninth overall at the Colonial Half Marathon in 1:15:11. That course is known for fast times because of the level of competition, not because of its rolling hills.

Jingle All the Way 10K, 31:54
Often the smallest division, only eight runners qualified. Ray Pugsley had some unfinished business to attend to before leaving the division in February but Philippe Rolly, who won the 2008 title, was nowhere to be found. He listlessly jogged through the Ashburn 5K for an overall win in 17:00. The second week of December former Open champion George Probst aged up and threw down the gauntlet, winning the Jingle Bell 5K outright in 16:14. He had already topped everyone at the Star City Half Marathon to start the period with 1:12:42.
Juices flowing, Pugsley upped the ante the next day, finishing the Jingle All the Way 10K in 31:54 to take the division. He added a 33:39 age group course record at the REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K to start the year. For spring, he will be aiming at the masters crown as well.
Pekka Stenholm recovered from a second place finish at the Celtic Solstice in 27:34 to defeat fifth place Eric Makovsky by five seconds in 34:05 at the Jingle All the Way 10K. In February, he defeated Randy McDermott at the RRCA Challenge 10M 55:21 to 56:30 to maintain the third spot.

USA Cross Country Championships 8K, 25:20, 10K = 32:08
Andres Wright (41) of Frederick, MD takes top honors with his 33:32 at the Jingles All the Way 10K as well as head–to head wins against all qualifiers at the USA Cross Country Championships.
All last year, Andres Wright was the man to beat. Already he feels the pressure sure to come from Ray Pugsley, who started his masters career with an excellent 25:20 at the USA Cross Country Championships 8K. Wright started the period at the huge Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 26:50 so his 27:00 at that same cross country 8K was very impressive. It matched Kevin White's best race, the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K, in 16:25 and perhaps more importantly it was a notch faster than Doug Mock's 27:17 and White's own 27:59 there.
Wright had already notched the best qualifying time winning the Jingle All the Way 10K in 33:32. Top times and top head to head equals top spot. Mock made a bid to close the gap with two excellent 10 milers. First, he won the RRCA Challenge in 56:13. Then he began March returning to his alma mater in Salisbury, MD to finish second overall at the Tim Kennard 10M in 56:12. Note Mock also began the period with an overall win at the Northern Central Trail Marathon in 2:41:52.
Fourth place Steve Speirs of Virginia Beach, VA is a member of the 50 Plus Club (dedicated to racing 50 races in a year). Thus, it was no surprise that he raced enough times to win his division 11 times. That is pretty good, considering he ran 12 races overall. Always near the top, he finished second overall at the Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 49:54 (10K = 34:39). He also finished the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K third overall in 17:08.
Tom Banchy was the masters champ at the Celtic Solstice in 27:47. Number six Peter Keating held back Charles Powell at the RRCA Challenge 10M, 58:36 to 58:48.

Jingle All the Way 10K, 34:02
Tim Schuler wanted to make a bold opening statement as he entered the division. Third overall at the Ashburn Farm 10K in 34:56 seemed a good way. Last year's titans started slowly. Runner-up Mark Stickley ran a 17:48 5K and champion David Haaga finished a Jingle Bell Jog 8K even slower with 29:29. Indeed, Haaga was 13th at the USA Cross Country Championships 8K in 29:39. The usually reliable Greg Cauller was also in a funk, racing 10th there in 29:04. Dave Berardi, emerging from his recent slumber, was sixth there in 28:38.
In December, Stickley lit up the division at the Jingle All the Way 10K in 34:02. Schuler's response, beating eighth place Cauller 28:28 to 28:44 at the Celtic Solstice, left him as runner-up. Much of the rankings are based on head to head. Haaga continued to struggle until the final weeks when he propelled himself to fifth with the best marathon in his age group for 2009, the B&A Trail in 2:43:29. Berardi is well raced at the RRCA Challenge over the years. This year he ran a very nice 58:13, ahead of seventh place Chris Chattin's 59:33, to earn fourth place.
A new face appeared from Roanoke, VA to take the three spot. Edward Dickerson won it all at the Blacksburg 10M in 58:16. He also was an overall winner in a 10K the final weekend of the period.

Way Station's Thanksgiving Day 5K, 16:54, 10K = 35:15
Weems McFadden (51) of Columbia, MD has broken from the middle of the pack and is challenging for the top spot in the division. His excellent 29:29 at the Celtic Solstice 5M put him fourth in his division.
Last year's winter champion, Stephen Chantry, took down four other ranked runners with his opening bid at the Governor's Land 5K in 17:20. After that, he was working on his indoor track stuff until February when he went after the not-to-be-missed USA Cross Country Championships 8K. He was seventh in 29:47, very close to this period's champion, Pete Gibson of Murfreesboro, NC, who ran 29:40. Note that Mark Malander was fourth in 29:08 but never got that second race in.
Gibson did so in spades. From Thanksgiving through January he had five big races, all of which were faster than anyone else. Three times he was second overall. He had a Turkey Trot 10K in 35:23. In December, he ran the Santa Claus Shuffle in 16:59 and capped it all off with a sparkling 1:33:16 at the TS Tune-up 25K.
In third place is Dan Lawson with 8th at the USA Cross Country Championships 8K in 30:23. He fared much better on the roads of Montgomery County, finishing second overall twice. At the Turkey Burnoff 5M, he ran 29:20 and, twisting through Rockville at the Jingle Bell Jog 8K, he ran 28:52.
Weems McFadden of Columbia, MD has been feeling his oats, racing away from his regular racing companion John Chall. At the Celtic Solstice, he was first grandmaster in 29:29. In February, on another rolling course but twice the distance, he won the RRCA Challenge 10M in 1:01:55. James Bates nicks Peter Darmody with a slightly faster Thanksgiving week 5K, 17:47 to 17:51.

YMCA Turkey Trot 5K, 17:11, 10K = 35:51
Often the fastest runners do not race enough to qualify. Chuck Moeser made a rare opening day appearance after winning the Fall Ranking period. Nobody really expected him to bother racing again, at least they hoped so. Alan Pemberton has been enjoying great success and darted out to the lead on Thanksgiving Day in Washington, besting Moeser's 17:50 from the weekend before with his 17:42. Unfortunately for Pemberton, Moeser had finished his Thanksgiving race in Fredericksburg 31 seconds before that to take the title. Moeser declined autographs and promptly went back into hiding.
Seven runners this period have won the title. Pemberton took out sixth place Tom Ruckert at the USA Cross Country Championships 8K in 30:51 to 31:26 before taking a last stab at Moeser. He ran the No Rail on the Trail 10K in 36:38. Fifth place Jim Wright is on his way back, racing the RRCA Challenge in 1:06:09. Back in December, he raced against stiff competition at the Jingle All the Way 10K with Richard Adams, Jr. and Dan Eddy. Eddy, known mainly for his 5K speed, had his best effort there racing 39:48. Meanwhile, Adams has located the fountain of youth. He began the period hustling through the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 18:32. Against these guys he took his sleigh and bolted away to a nifty 38:04 and third in the division. He improved more than a minute from last year.

St. Kateri's Run With the Son 5K, 19:39, 10K = 40:59
Gary Chidester (61) of Woodbridge, VA had his best race in March at the DCRRC Burke Lake 12K to take the 23rd spot in the always giant 60-64 division.

Runners aged up and fewer came out to play this period. Langston Shelton of Grafton, VA moved up from fifth to the top place with a swift 5K in 19:39. Former champion Jason Page of Hamilton, VA had a solid race on the rolling hills at the Markham Asylum 5M in 33:07 for the runner-up spot. Page added a Red Ribbon 5K in 20:27 while third place Angelo Celesia did not have a second time in the top 25. Celesia earned his spot the first weekend with a 41:51 10K. Shelton had run a nice 20:09 at Toys for Tots; then he backed up his claim winning the Colonial HM in 1:32:24.
Another former champion, Ronnie Wong, had 12 age group wins and ran four marathons to edge fifth place Bernard Wright. Ultra mileage runner Wong's best race was the Dancel Family 5K in 20:08. Wright, who also puts in the miles, averaging as much as 130 miles a week, won the Fort Hunt 10K in 41:58. Jim Noone is always hanging around the glory. He waited until March to run his best race at the DCRRC Burke Lake 12K in 51:42.

RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, 1:11:20, 10K = 42:55
Malcolm O’Hagan (68) of Chevy Chase, MD blitzed the Jingle All the Way 10K in 44:52 to move him solidly into fourth in a very competitive division.

Lou Shapiro of Silver Spring, MD again won everywhere he went. He started tamely, winning the YMCA Turkey Chase in 44:50. That gave Michael Golash some real hope as he darted out at the Trot for Hunger 5K in 21:06. Shapiro runs a lot of races and some were just victories. He won the Al Lewis 10M in 1:13:11 to match Golash in January. In early February, Richard Pane headed their way with a nifty GW Birthday 10K, worth a 44:24 ahead of Sonny Barber (45:41). At that point, Malcolm O'Hagan had already garnered the fourth spot, winning Jingle All the Way in 44:52 to Barber's 45:19.
Then Shapiro took down the competition at the RRCA Challenge in 1:11:20, well ahead of seventh place Jack Pitarra (1:16:02). Bobby Spencer of Daleville, VA was sixth with the second fastest 5K the Drumstick Dash in 21:32. Shapiro ended the period with a 43:48 at the No Rail on the Trail 10K.

VAB Turkey Trot 10K, 45:48
Chan Robbins of Arlington, VA slowed a mere four seconds this year to 37:20 at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M. Already Mel Williams had put away the division with a sterling VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 45:48 ahead of Duane Lougee (47:49). Lougee and Williams never met again, though both ran many of the TS Tune-up races. Lougee had a faster 20K in January than Williams did in his February 20K. While Lougee was winning the 20K, Williams ran the 10K in 46:33 for the fastest 10K of 2009 so far. Lougee waited until the last weekend at the Fort Eustis 10K to match that time.
Robbins easily handled his division at the two big DC area 10Ks, Jingle All the Way in 47:13 and the GW Birthday 10K at a 47:23 equivalent (slightly long course). Stan Neumann of Timonium, MD had the third fastest 5K in 23:30. Maynard Weyers was close behind at the Virginia Turkey Trot 5K in 23:42.

Jingle All the Way 10K, 50:34
Jerry Lewis of Reston, VA joined the group with a plan to take the top spot. Indeed, he had three age group wins and by mid December was still ahead of the usual top man, George Yannakakis of Sparks, MD. In fact, his Fall Into Winter 10K in 54:22 was behind Jack McMahon's opening bid, winning the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 42:28 with Larry Dickerson owning a piece of the pie, running the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 26:17. Yannakakis was off their paces with his Turkey Trot 5K in 26:19.
This year the division was decided at the Jingle All the Way 10K. Yannakakis held off a fast moving Lewis 50:34 to 50:52. Then he got to work with the next five fastest times to end all doubt. No match ups for McMahon and Dickerson, though they both raced the Christmas Caper. Dickerson won the 5K and McMahon won the 10K.

Governor's Land 5K 35:48, 10K = 1:14:41
Wendell Golden and Harry Freestone battle in the Charlottesville area while Bob Atkins and Robie Cone duke it out in Winchester. There are still a lot of racers in the eighties. This period George Brown took the lead away from the Charlottesville duo with his New Year's Day Resolution Run 5K in 38:03 to start the year. He added an enhanced 37:18 the following month at the Super Bowl 5K.
Ferris Portner of King George, VA moved into second with a Sweetheart 4M a week later. Then the final day of the period he made things difficult with his Organ Donor 8K in 1:01:20. His time matched Brown's to the second, giving him the very narrowest sliver of a victory. With nearly identical credentials, Portner has a Moreland Racing factor of 10 to Brown's 8.
